I had the "Quest for the rings" and that was amazing at the time.
...but didn't anyone notice that "the wizard of Odyssey" could actually see the future?
"The keyboard is the key to greater challenge" is what he said, but actually, by placing a mask over the keyboard, what he was doing was to antecipate the touchscreens we have today!
The wizard of Odyssey had seen tablets, but could not reproduce them with 80s technology! :D
Wow, I have Conquest of the World, awesome (combat ripoff) game. Don't recall me and my friends ever messing with the board, but that particular game was still playable without it.
Were you even alive then? I was. for its time it was a great system I thought it was a better system then the atari 2600. Games like quest for the rings were deep and kept you busy for hours. It was ahead of its time. Quest for the Rings was the first RPG done on a computer that had visuals the only other game was Zork but that was text only and was only on college Mainframes. before you trash something maybe you should play it first.
The Odyssey 2 was released shortly before I was born, and I still enjoy it. Its library wasn't huge, but it had a few really entertaining games that I was pleased to play even when new (at the time) consoles like the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were going strong.
@loonmaniac It's problem was that it was initially marketed as a potential educational system as well as a video game console.....which made it quite uncool to own. We usually made fun of the one kid in a class who had this thing. My major beef with the O II now is that all the games seem to be alike....even the characters are identical.
I do think all the computer and game commercials were much better than now.. as well as the box art and the art o the side of the arcade machines were very much better than now. i miss those days and that look sometimes..
i agree the games were more challenging.. but a lot of that had to do with programmers upping the "cheat" factor if you will. come on.. just like this video, the guy dies and the minute he spawns another guy a monster is already standing on it and kills him??? There was no save either.. thats why they seemed more challenging.. the computer cheated and you had to go back to the begining where you started three hours before. sigh.. i spose we were used to it and yelled at how we were ripped off
I was the only kid in the projects in East New York Brooklyn with an Odyssey 2. Everyone had Atari and everyone preferred my Odyssey 2. Mines still works to this day.
I wish Nintendo would release an Odyssey collection game for Wii just like the Intellivision Lives game for Gamecube! The Odyssey 2 was so cool during it's time. It's one of the most highly underrated game consoles ever. My childhood would have never been the same without Quest For The Rings, Monkey Shines, K.C. Munchkin etc. In some ways I liked this better than the Atari 2600.
in the 1970's it was about challenging games, now its better graphics and sound, I just wish they fix the AI the AI is the single greatest problems with games today. Almost a decade later and AI is still as advance as the scientists getting stuck in the door in Half Life.

The Wizard does look and sound very much like Freddie Jones, who played Thufir Howat in the David Lynch 1984 "Dune".
