my hard drive makes 2 different noises but it usually sounds normal one noise sounds similar to a couple u played but to me it sounds like a drill sorta and the other sounds like a squeak
strange thing is that I used to fix harddrives that made the sounds......memories, I'm talking things like western digital 5 and 10MB hardrives, way back then. most were BER, some could be recovered, those sounds are very real and very I was there!!!
I 've ha my current internal HDD for almoste 5 years, never failed me so far and still going strog....altough I have a External HDD almost a year old....and it's already starting to faii.....both are from the same manufacturer
Is this true? Does mounting damage the hard disk? Please tell me, I am getting a new hard disk, and if this is true, I would rather extract the files from the ISO than mounting them.
well we had a laptop runing windows me and it lasted 8yrs no clicking mint condion the laptop was retierd after 8 yrs and the hdd 3yrs after when it fell life span more tha it should have yet it did
I have a western digital from 2004 that was clicking. I finally got the data off it after a few tries. I then did a full format not the quick one and it's working fine. I think bad sectors can also cause the heads to hunt and formating sometimes helps. It's been working for a few months fine but I got a spare just in case.
the way you described cycle clicks sounds like what mine was doing... the only thing is the sounds are NOT LOUD at all. to hear it i'd have to put my ear against the portable hard drive. it is not backed up either. all that happened was i was viewing video clips i shot on it while connected to my laptop.. the program froze... i unplugged the hadr drive and suddenly it can't be found when i plug into PC's. should i expect physical damage to it for this reason? what are your thoughts?
I had a Western Digital 3.5" HDD that made that first sound while trying to load the OS. I also have a Hitachi 2.5" HDD that is just over 7 years old and still works fine.
I haven't had this happen yet, but I've always heard to stay way from Western Digital drives because they are low grade components (same thing with dells).
W7 rocks! It actually warns you about possible HDD failure!!!
I'm backing up a 1T HDD right now, because W7 told me it might be failing...I've also been using that same drive on an XP machine too, but XP never warned me about any possible failures. Thank God I installed W7 onto one of my machines, or it may have been too late to do the backup before failure.
Yay only approx. 18 hours to clone the drive left. Hope it doesn't fail before then!!!
I didnt had any of those noises i dont have any sounds but when i bought my pc almost 2 years ago i had NO SOUND now....when i listen VEEEEEERRRRYYYYYYY carefull:P
its very hard to hear but then u hear a sound like a old pc loading:P
No need to worry. Basicly if your hard drive is about to fail in between 2 weeks, these sounds will be loud. Its normal that your hard drive is starting to make more noise its on every hard drive. They get old, like people. When they get old, theyre perfomance is lowering. My hard drive is about 1 year old and it already makes scratching noise sometimes.
Games on your hard drive puts very little extra strain on your drive. These things are accessing millions of files a day, if they're going to fail, they're going to fail, whether you're using CD imaging or not. How you use it simply decides how it'll probably fail.
Example, a drive that's left running, but rarely accessed, will likely develop bearing problems.
A drive that's accessed the same areas constantly is likely to get bad sectors.
A drive in general use... you'll know when it happens.
yeah i had bad luck, i was installing windows on my computer and i rest my foot on the top of my computer, and the computer crashed and there was a yellow light flashing on the tower, it only stopped after i unplugged it, then when i turned it back on my hard drive kept clicking, luckily i had another hdd, but oh no!! when i pulled out my installtion disk it was CRACKED and didn't boot! shit, and this happened last night, now i need to find a new disk.
Yes hard drives do make those sounds. But I have had cooling fans go bad on me that also make the same bad sounds. Saddly I have experianced everyone of those sounds you played first hand.
This is of course old info; the uncited Deskstar failure recordings are from when S.M.A.R.T. was first brewing, on longitudinal-recording medium-GMR heads with completely different sense amps. Image drives should last 20 years if bearing vibration (from a train or laptop wankery) is tolerable.

games read off the hard drive anyway right? They only read the data to verify you have an original copy. i don't think just burning data on the drive will harm it much.

hell I coppy a lot of shit to my computer cant wait to get a solid state drive and cant wait for them to get cheaper and greater cap's cool video I have had harddrives make those noises and not son long after the first time hearing them the drive is dead
Hi Chirs, I have a Toshiba Satellite, I'm not sure if I fried my hard drive or what, but the power light comes on and then off on my hard drive. I attach it as a usb device the usb port recognizes the drive, but doesn't show up on my computer. Says Generic Void usb device. What does this mean?
Heres my 2 cents.. If you are that lazy to switch cd's over and over again.. then you should go outside..really. But only time it would be a good idea to do this is if you are letting someone borrow your cd/game.
When it comes to copying games to the hard disk, it really depends on the size of the game. The larger the game is, the more data the system must retrieve, and because of the size of newer games this puts the hard disk under very intensive pressure.
If you're gonna do this, I would only recommend that you do this with small games. This way, it saves the hard disk unneccesary pressure and gives it time to cool down. I've heard that's meant to prolong the drive's life.
I have windows vista. and i just got a warning saying hard drive failure back up your files immediately. Is this for reall? I play games alot. Alot of the time i leave my computer on. I install alot of games. games that require alot of memory graphics. Is this a computer hard drive fialure? and if it does fail will i have to buy a new one? or does it make me start from scratch?
This laptop I am using right now is pretty crap... only 55.5gb of memory on the hard drive. It's been going for 6 years now. The computer is slow-ish but it's bearable and I've never actually had any problems since I bought it. I'm hoping for another year or two of service yet and I know she won't let me down (that's how you know I'm a nerd, I'm emotionally attached to a laptop).
maybe someone could help,i know quite a bit about computers but,my internal hard drive failed on my emachine w6409 i have it all backed up on wd/my book external harddrive 1t/b,i baught a sata 500 gig internal drive my question is how would i get my windows xp media cener edition back on the 500 gig and fix it to where it will boot up and work, thankyou very much any help would be greatly appreciated.
This exact thing happened to me about 5 days ago. I had been writing a novel for over 2 years and had thousands of words of essays etc for university. I am DEVASTATED and petrified that the data can not be retrieved. whats the latest with you?
Oh shoot, I forgot to ask. I have been having problems with my Hard-Drive as far as gaming only. I am pretty sure it shuts off because first my game would freeze with the sound looping and then no response after that.
The weird thing is that it happens to only a few of my games. The last time I checked it was only Call of Duty 4 and Zombie Panic! Source. What do you guys think?
I had clicking before when I was moving my computer around. I ran health checks and it said it was in good health.. eventually it stopped making these sounds and everything is fine now :).
I have a question... I think my hard drive failed and i was wondering what caused it. I play games on my computer like guild wars online mmorpg and was wondering is that the reason why my hard drive failed?
Hard drives are likely to fail if you spin them up and down a lot or if you shut them down improperly too much.
Also, games are always installed to hard disk already. Games usually only want the CD to verify you're not pirating it. Which of course, you are anyway :D

I have a question... I think my hard drive failed and i was wondering what caused it. I play games on my computer like guild wars online mmorpg and was wondering is that the reason why my hard drive failed?
5uNnY14 3 years ago
No, probably not.
Hard drives are likely to fail if you spin them up and down a lot or if you shut them down improperly too much.
Also, games are always installed to hard disk already. Games usually only want the CD to verify you're not pirating it. Which of course, you are anyway :D
