  • this was a beautiful song, until Cash sang it, you need a choir to sing this

  • @ManeringMr this verisons more heart felt

  • If and when i die i want this played at my funeral

  • Comment removed

  • @dnpound Really?... I mean reeeeaaally?!? What a tool.... Troll or not WHAT A TOOL!

  • ive never respected a man nor a musical artist as much as i respect johnny cash! what a legacy of amazing music and insights he has left behind for the world! respect to you now and forever johnny from EIRE! (Ireland)!

  • Rely on Cash to take such a sad song and make it infinitely sadder. I remember my mother singing this song to me in bed when I was a little child. Even then the gravity of it was emotionally crushing, and it still is. This is probably my favorite rendition of Danny Boy. Cash is always so somber.

  • I love Johny Cash, and have a genetic like of this song. Together though...... It's wrong, and you all know it.

  • @FourTwenny whatever dude

  • Please pray for Justin Michael Roberts. Who died on January 31, 2012 from a sharp turn that ended his wonderful life.

    Fly high, baby. <3

  • Im proud to be Irish ! :))

  • The three songs that I want at my funeral are, Danny Boy, Amazing Grace, You Raise Me Up.

More songs will make it on to that list. because I want my funeral to be focused on singing.

  • oh.geez.Johnny...:*/ ...wow....

  • when i was 6 years old they call me Danny boy ;)

  • Comment removed

  • My grandpa used to sing this all the time :,)

  • I want this to play at my funeral.

  • OH MY GOD, at least you kids ramble on a good video.

  • my name is danny boy XD

  • @SnIpErftBaLliStIc r u serious. If you are joking you truly are immature.

  • @raidoform2 im serious

  • He didn't try to do too much with this, and I respect that.

  • People should really just keep their opinions to themselves when it comes to the quality of music.

  • No this not a tenor singing it but you will not find a more beautiful, poignant, and ,heartfelt version anywhere .god bless and keep you Mr.Cash you were and will always be a blessing to us all

  • bye grandpa.. see you in Heaven when He decides im ready

  • Thank you and I never mean to affend anyone

  • as much as i love johny cash , god rest his soul , the orbison version is much better

  • if you dislike this song then you should just go get a life

  • Well I never said it was bad or he dident have paison I simply said I dident like the pitches so calm down grumplbebumple I also know he's past and I never I hated him ether ok? If not that's your problem ok so chill! Geeze that kind of langege around this song!

  • @kitsunelover11577 i know right. What's up with that guy, who cares if you give your opinion, as long as you give it kindly... nothing wrong with that!

  • :")

  • I'm gonna be hated for this but I don't like it because he doesent have the right pitches for this song

  • @kitsunelover11577 thank you for your opinion...now kindly go fuck yourselt. it's called fucking passion and if you have it you don't need the right pitch. (to quote bill hicks) this man plays from his fucking heart, period, and has for almost half a century. not to mention this cover came off the last album to be released while he was still alive. less than a year later he passed away. get some concept about soul and passion before you ever criticize a fucking legend. perfection doesn't = art

  • @rocknroll19842 yourself is spelled with an F you IDIOT!

  • @dnpound oh shit! I didn't realize that, thank you spelling nazi. I always thought it was spelled with a t. my ignorance shames me, and you know it couldn't have possibly been a typo. I mean the F and T keys are so far away from each other... god bless you spelling nazi. sieg heil! sieg heil! sieg heil! segi heil! sieg heil!

  • johhny cash, you are amazing and i love every single one of your songs i wish you didnt have to go but you had a good life and now ur up there with your wife :)

    R.I.P Johnny Cash

  • Everybody probably has a better reason to watch this. But I just found out that Soap from call of duty died and wanted to mourn.

  • hermosísima canción.

  • one the the best songs ever.

  • V that's exactly how the simple words he sang chill you to the spine. Others cannot recreate it. He took music & gave it an entirely new meaning. Hurt is a perfect example. Nearly the same lyrics, though all can understand the new & personal depths he expressed. So long as I've got JC I've got peace of mind.

  • god bless daddyxxxxxxx

  • 0:52 HES A SPY!

  • This song reminds me of my grandfather...

  • R.I.P. Dan Wheldon.

  • Blown away to find out people are coming here for Dan Wheldon. I came here in memory of my grandma who sang this song to me as a child but realized many were here in memory of DW. As a long time Indycar fan and former racing mechanic I got to meet DW a few times when he was coming up. His enthusiasm makee us laugh. He was a great spirit in racing, we knew it. I was so saddened by the tragedy. What a loss. Dario always called him "Danny Boy" so know this song has even more meaning to me now.

  • Love you nanny. Rest in peace. We will never forget you, I have 21 years of great memories that nobody can take away. This song will always remind me of you. Cannot wait til the day we meet again. Miss you so so much xxx

  • @supershelly07 Wow, so strange and heart warming. I was looking for a great version of this song because of my memories of my grandma singing this song to me as a child. Maybe you were doing the same only a day ago. So nice to see this song reminds you of your nanny. It means a lot that to me that this song brings the same sort memories to some else. True folk music straight from the folks we loved. 3rd generation very proud Irish American Grandama Rose was. We won't forget them or this song.

  • @SuperBuzz71 That is strange that we were both thinking of our nans when listening to the song. She always loved the song so much and used to sing it so thats why it reminds me of her. She was born in Dublin, Ireland and came over to England when she was in her 20's. I am just so glad I have these kind of songs to remind me of her and when ever I think of her I can just play this song and I can remember her and all the lovely memories and you can do the same thinking of your grandma x

  • proper name is 'Irish tune from Co. Derry'. It was first heard in the Co Derry town of Limavady played by a passing wandering minstrel. No one ever found the minstrel and therefore the origins of the tune remain unknown

  • WE WILL MEET AGAIN

  • #RIPDanWheldon

If you wish to pay condolence to the Wheldon family please consider the auction set-up by Graham Rahal for the Wheldon family trust or simply pay respects at: danwheldonmemorial . com

  • I came here and listened to this for Dan Wheldon, I didn't realize so many others did as well.

  • RIP Dan Wheldon #77 Forever miss you buddy

  • Better than to burn out than fade away- RIP Dan Wheldon!

  • RIP Dan Wheldon, racing won't be the same without you.

  • My thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Dan Wheldon, an IndyCar driver whom died today in a horrific 15 car crash in Las Vegas.

    GOD SPEED

  • @yetti399 hahahahhhahahhaahahaha

  • @yetti399 wrong dan bro

  • Hey Papaw, I could use you right now.

  • A perfect Irish and Englsh marriage of words and music

  • this song puts my mind to peace

  • @missCarolineGroat this was played at my partners granddads funeral and it seems also her dad's if things come to pass.

  • @staley101 I Wish you and your partner all the best im sorry for her loss...Keep well Stay Strong

  • RIP Micah... you are missed my bro.

  • RIP

  • I shed a tear.... Life is on standby when u loose somebody u love.... Dont ever think its the end of your world... Carry the memory and let it make u stronger...

  • I remember my grandfather singing this to me when I was a little girl. Now whenever I hear it, I can't help crying. I miss you Grampy, you were my best friend.

  • this was played at my dad's funeral.

    you are loved and missed.

  • See ya soon granny. Keep singin' that song in heaven. Love you, always.

  • MY DADS FAVORITE SONG HOPE 2 SEE HOPE TO SEE HIM SOON RIP MY Dad

  • my mother sang this song in high school. she really liked this when i had her listen to it.

  • I may have not left memories of gold, but at least I left thoughts of rust

  • Not an Irishman, no sweet voice, but the true emotion of loss rings true. crazygalmusic

  • @crazygalmusic Emotion is the language understood by all languages....and anything Johnny sang...you can feel it in the first word.

  • @crazygalmusic didnt johnny cash have irish traveller background though? cash is one of their names.. I know he stated he is of Gypsy descent in his final autobiography.

  • @roisiee Cash found out that his heritage was a British Isles mix. For example, he learned upon researching his heritage that he was of Scottish royal descent on his father's side, traced back to Malcolm I of Scotland. After meeting with now-dead laird Major Michael Crichton-Stuart of Falkland, Fife, Scotland, Johnny traced the Cash family tree to eleventh-century Fife; Cash Loch and other locations in Fife bear the name of his family

  • @Malifurios he was pure scottish

  • Slainte! Gob Bless Johnny Cash!

  • god bless colombo

  • Would love to hear Jeff Buckley's version of this if he was alive.

  • johnny cash was always great but in his old days there was a magic in his voice

  • I don't think this song suits him at all, not in my opinion anyway. (Not hating or trolling, I love Johnny Cash, just don't think his voice fits the song)

  • i love johnny cash, but an irish/scottish person sings this better

  • I love you too Johnny :')

  • Hahahaha. Is he for real? He's talking, he ain't singing, Haha, that makes me laugh! Thank you, though.

  • AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • everytime ihear this song i cant hold back the tears i love the song

  • Johnny Cash really couldn't sing could he.

  • @VincentPrice111

Please tell me you kidding.. Or at least, please remove your comment before some of the more rabid fans come along and make fools of themselves..

  • @hiimgod801 Nah I'm kidding.

But among the famous singers who covered this, he can't hit all them intended notes.

  • @VincentPrice111

True, he could never do those high notes :P

  • Comment removed

  • @claroff nou

  • rabid fan... face 2 face, you would recant that . or bleed

  • there is something magical about Johnny Cash's old voice in this song, I can't help tearing up.

  • "And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me" - So beautiful.

  • played this for my father on his memorial ..daniel

  • Ed O'Neill sang this in one of the episodes of Modern family.

  • ...and you thought Danny Boy was said *before* Cash sang it...

  • this makes my eyes lose the plot. beautiful stuff

  • It's a sad song , but very beautiful.

  • I'd like to play this song at my funeral...it's simply beautiful...

  • @PakoMcFearless how can you play if you are dead?

  • @Hussarer That will be my last willing.. I will write it...

  • Me m8 Danny died this morning, 27 years old Devastated RIP m8, had to listen to this never gonna forget you m8 never. xx

  • I prefer Roy Orbison's version. If you're talking about notes, he's got it. If you're talking about sorrow, he's got it. The Big O went through hell and sung like a angel.

  • @superkenalmighty Johnny has quite a bit of sorrow in his voice thougth, ya gotta say. rough, rough life and it really adds to this song.

  • I want to play this at our Pride festival. :)

  • this song is the song jesus would have wanted played at his crucifiction.

  • This is the song that should be played on my funeral

  • @Freddyandersson92 this song should be played at every funeral. . . ever.

  • Johnny Cash was a great country performer. But he was not an accomplished singer. He was seldom even solidly on pitch. And the demands of this song require an accomplished singer. There are great performances of Danny Boy and Londonderry Air on YouTube by John McCormack, Mario Lanza, and even Andy Williams. But this performance by Johnny Cash is simply dreadful.

  • Comment removed

  • @CarlLafong01 johnny cash was a singer with some serious soul who didn't care at all about the notes he hit or the tone of his voice, he just cared about emotionally connecting with an audience. and if you can't understand that, i just feel sorry for you man

  • @tonysangsweet I respect your comment and your appreciation for Johnny Cash. I liked Cash too, when he was young and at his best. But a performer who is all about "soul" and "emotion" should be an actor, not a singer. A singer really should care about hitting the notes, and should actually manage to be on pitch a good part of the time. In this performance, Cash hardly hits a single note.

  • @CarlLafong01 i think you're absolutely right about soulful or emotional singers should maybe be actors. but, like you said, his earlier work sounded great, and i think as a dying old man who has been moved by a classical irish ballad reserves the right to sing it and let it be heard. at his age, he didn't need to worry about notes, he just wanted to be heard.

  • @jrgorilla1 I must agree that his last work had an endearing emotional quality. As for the musical quality, perhaps we are remembering earlier, happier times. Of course as a singer of "Danny Boy", he was never Mario Lanza or John McCormack, but then those operatic tenors were never Johnny Cash.....LOL.

  • @CarlLafong01 true. lanza was one in a million, but he was always a bit of a cheeseball, i think. each singer had their comfort zone, and i only think johnny was able to stray into uncharted waters because of his old age. still, though, i think we are both right, in a sense

  • @CarlLafong01 i dont think you get the song or the singer,im not having a go-but every word john sings is straight from the heart, dripping in emotion, regret, fear etc-the man was a one off he did blues as well as anyone and danny boy is a blues song, its not about being pitch perfect-i suppose you also think NIN hurt was better than johns,if so your missing the msg-this was a dying man and hurt couldve been written for cash, even reznor said something like "i wrote it,cash owned it"he was honoured

  • @returnofthemadguy I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash at his youthful best. He was unique. A great country artist. But you're right, I just "don't get" those sad last works. (Either the songs or that bizarre last video he made.) But even at his best, Cash could never handle this old Irish ballad. There's a clip on YouTube in which he absolutely butchers the song on his 1970's TV show. This theme requires an Irish tenor to sing it properly. See John McCormack doing Londonderry Air as"O Mary Dear."

  • @CarlLafong01 i was not trying to be condescending to you,i have only really started to listen to johnny cash so you will know more about him than i ,what i meant was the emotion of the song is more important than the actual performance, imo that is what singing the blues means, its not supposed to be pitch perfect and because of that i find it more "real" if you understand what im trying to say-the last video (i think its the one for hurt-was in my opinion) reflecting on his life and mistakes-con

  • @returnofthemadguy And I totally respect the point you're making. Cash's last work should NOT purely be judged on perfect pitch. Much more is going on than picture perfect vocalization. Actually when I first made the comment, I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder about Cash and "Danny Boy". Another guy on here posts a lot of Johnny Cash, allows comments, and then immediately deletes comments and bans members who make the slightest critical statement. Johnny is GOD....LOL. contd......

  • @returnofthemadguy He just didn't want to hear my suggestion that this late eighteenth century Irish theme is not really ideal material for Cash's baritone style. Speaking of unusual Cash material, I found a version of "Mountain Dew" on here with Cash and Bob Dylan. This novelty number seems an oddball choice of material for the pairing, but it works. Dylan's vocal is typically idiosyncratic, and Cash is picture perfect. Search "Mountain Dew" "Cash" "Dylan", if interested.

  • @CarlLafong01 thanks friend-as i said,im not a massive fan, a friend i used to drink with did john on the karaoke was fantastic, sadly hes no longer with us so hurt kinda reminds me of him and how good a pal he was to me,as you say some ppl cant handle the fact that someone they admire is human like the rest of us and has their own faults is quite pathetic, but you think it would come more from the bieber fans and the like than grown ups, thanks for being able to conduct a sensible debate cheers-j

  • @returnofthemadguy Very sorry to hear about your friend. Music has such a wonderful ability to evoke emotions and sweet memories. All my best!

  • @CarlLafong01 thank you very much,you are a good decent person-joe

  • @CarlLafong01 the bad things he done and his conversion to christainity, its a goodbye,he is laying himself bare looking for forgiveness knowing he doesnt have long 2 live, and thats the exact reason why i think it is so much better than the original-reznor wrote a great song but it couldve been written by john himself,he lived the lyrics-autotune makes a mockery of music and the stripped down "unplugged" style makes the song more poignant in my eyes, blues come from pain, like all of the best art

  • This song makes me chill...Johnny is truly a Legend

  • I think this is the only song i fight to hold back tears it reminds me of grandma and my grandpa johnny cash will never die he was a great man

  • This was played at my Grandpa's funeral.

    I love you Papa.

  • @MissCarolineGroat same :')

  • @jackstrawfrmwchta Obvious troll is obvious. Seriously tho.. no one wants to hear your shit...

  • @jackstrawfrmwchta EXCUSE ME who are you calling a first rate dick sucker I'm a baritone singer and I've never done what you acuse all of people like me of doing so don't go around sterotyping you little lier

  • Cash's singing reminds me of my papa's singing. I love you, papa.

  • its not the londonderry air melody. thats just a different name for the song. its also called irish tune from country derry

  • yeh man

  • It's his rough, unpretentious, style that gives this version that heartfelt, sincere quality that a lot of other, more "quality" versions lack.

  • dude i didnt no johny cash song a version of this song... this is the shit!

  • Londonderry air melody

  • 2:32-2:55 Brings tears to my eyes every time...

  • haunting...

  • always a classic rip cash .........legends never die

  • My grandma and I listened to this song over and over when this album came out. She has since passed, but her memories live on when I play this song, particularly Cash's version.

  • Indeed this song applies to everyone, but a priest wear a "uniform" and that is a great way of advertising! We priest should be visible, and not conceal our identity, but alas, we would rather go undetected. Why?

  • @watchful38 Who are you asking that old man? You yourself should realize your so called faith is dying. So why don't you actually do something about it.

  • Better singers couldn't sing this song better.

  • "CASH"

  • Johnny Cash, a favourite of mine, especially his "Man in BlacK" Myself I am a Catholic Priest and don't wear black much anymore...have we priests lost something that Johnny was proud of?

  • @watchful38 It's not just priests - that statement applies to almost all of us...

  • johnny you are missed, you are the heart of music

  • @rodman23t I enjoy johnny cash, but I really agree that he wasnt the best country singer. Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, and many others were better. He fit more in with Rock.

  • aweful

  • @fleshdecay

learn English then critisise Cash, moron

  • @juneZchacifde ROFL!!!!!!!!!

  • aweful

  • this is one of the most emotional versions of this song that I've ever heard

  • This makes me cry

  • I love johnny cash but this is not one of his good songs

  • I've never heard Johnny Cash singing this before - This man suffuses it with melancholy - i think he must have worn it as a coat. God bless you, old chap.
