After Images and Words and Awake, DT signed with Roadrunner (a musician has to eat and take what little job security he has, after all), and Roadrunner became notorious partly due to DT of putting a lid on what the band wants to do and instead coercing them to play music preferred by their sponsors and target audience. It's disgusting, and it's one reason pop music today sucks.
It's getting old. Everytime I check you guys out you're always 21 and under . This is just a kids band. But most of the kids like Slipknot and jj 10 to 1 so you lose. I've never heard slipknot. Well Portnoy sounds pretty good. Although it does sound like every other drum solo out there. I like creativity and no one beats Danny Carey in that department. If i would have to rate i give Portnoy a 7 and Carey a 9. Just my opinion though

Gifted they are, but there are many more skilled drummers that play with much more talent than the speed guys like mangini and portnoy. For example Neil Peart or Bonham. Or even as I mentioned before Carey. But still you are right it doesnt mean they are necessarily better musicians but they can play other things than just speed drumming.
Look, not dissing portnoy or dream theater at all because theyre all amazing musicians, but people get so swept away by this, he's more about speed than progressive beats. Danny Carey from Tool in my opinion is a much more progressive drummer judging just what ive seen from Mike and what I've seen from Danny. Im not saying Portnoy is bad, but what I've seen live and from recordings he isnt really as progressive or as versatile as the rest of DT.

I, as a drummer, can see partially what all the fuss is about. But the more he plays, the more he lays bare his debt to Neil Peart, Alan White & Bill Bruford. Not only that, but lately, he's stiff as a board...no feeling or emotion. Just metronome-precision. If it were up to me, he'd go take classes on how to play emotionally.
That's ridiculous--Portnoy is only doing music because he loves his music and has a tremendous amount of passion for it. Everyone says stuff like this about everyone in DT, but the more you watch them the more you realize it's just Rudess and the rest have a tremendous amount of feeling.
Rudess is the newest member of the band. Dream Theater were around a before Rudess Joined to replace Derek Sherinian. He played with DT after Kevin Moore left the band. Most of the these guys attended Berkly and have masters degrees in music. They all love what they do and have an incredible talent and passion for what they do. If you have never seen them live, do so!
i agree that he is deeply influenced by Peart. but what you are saying about not having emotion is totally unfair. if he didn't have emotion he would have quit by now because he has enough money to continue livning without working.

Well Portnoy sounds pretty good. Although it does sound like every other drum solo out there. I like creativity and no one beats Danny Carey in that department. If i would have to rate i give Portnoy a 7 and Carey a 9. Just my opinion though

That's like comparing Neil Pert to Phil Rudd (from ac/dc) One just outweighs the other. I like lars' drumming, but some of it is over the top, and most of it just boasts his only attribute, his speed. Drumming is more than speed to you dumbshits that don't actually play drums, but pretend to know whose the better. Have you ever taken into account tht maybe you think one is better because you like their type of music better? Next time shut up before you speak.

but i guess it's hard for me to tell where portnoy is going with his solos
u see, i can always recognize the drum part/solo of danny carey anytime, but it's not to say that carey is in anyway a more talented musician
i believe that portnoy and mangini are definitely the most gifted drummers

Gifted they are, but there are many more skilled drummers that play with much more talent than the speed guys like mangini and portnoy. For example Neil Peart or Bonham. Or even as I mentioned before Carey. But still you are right it doesnt mean they are necessarily better musicians but they can play other things than just speed drumming.

Look, not dissing portnoy or dream theater at all because theyre all amazing musicians, but people get so swept away by this, he's more about speed than progressive beats. Danny Carey from Tool in my opinion is a much more progressive drummer judging just what ive seen from Mike and what I've seen from Danny. Im not saying Portnoy is bad, but what I've seen live and from recordings he isnt really as progressive or as versatile as the rest of DT.

I, as a drummer, can see partially what all the fuss is about. But the more he plays, the more he lays bare his debt to Neil Peart, Alan White & Bill Bruford. Not only that, but lately, he's stiff as a board...no feeling or emotion. Just metronome-precision. If it were up to me, he'd go take classes on how to play emotionally.

That's ridiculous--Portnoy is only doing music because he loves his music and has a tremendous amount of passion for it. Everyone says stuff like this about everyone in DT, but the more you watch them the more you realize it's just Rudess and the rest have a tremendous amount of feeling.

Rudess is the newest member of the band. Dream Theater were around a before Rudess Joined to replace Derek Sherinian. He played with DT after Kevin Moore left the band. Most of the these guys attended Berkly and have masters degrees in music. They all love what they do and have an incredible talent and passion for what they do. If you have never seen them live, do so!

its easyer to get into the whole solo thing when your a drummer
even if you are a drummer, everyone has a different style of playing, you cant go saying o that drummers crap because you dont actually listen to the music
