  • I still dont like the idea in any country, parliament.. that the Speaker is appointed by what ever party/coalition that wins an election. I think the speaker should be elected by the people in whole different system either in a Party different to the partys in the general elections or independant. I just dont like how you can oversee the Parliament in a party (the goverment) because they won without having any bias or tendency towards the opposition.

  • WOW THIS GUYIS AMAZING

  • your speaker seems so cool! our speaker (UK) John Bercow is a idiot

  • Here in the UK he would have been named, but I am impressed with the way Mr Speaker handled it (certainly I doubt UK Speaker Berkow would have been able to handle it quite so well). I always think It's always a pity when things like this happen, as it takes time away from the chamber which could have been used to discuss policy to benefit the people of New Zealand.

  • thar guy reminds me of how i would react towards my teachers(mr speaker)

  • Trevor mallrd - shut the fuck up. This man is the Mark Latham of NZ politics

  • I agree with fragglet - Lockwood Smith looks like a model Speaker. The current British one, John Bercow, isn't a patch on him and interferes far too much. Most NZ Parliamentary procedures is copied from British including the ban on calling another member a liar - Winston Churchill once accused another MP of telling terminological inexactitudes instead :)

  • He's a damned good speaker you've got there. John Bercow is pretty good but I wish we had someone of this calibre.

  • Lockwood Smith is a great Speaker!!!

  • Lockwood had his grin wiped away but it was soon taken by Key and English

  • Lockwood Smith is the best speaker ever. HE IS AWESOME!!!

  • "the honourable member will just have to learn to control his anger" - lol

"i say to the hon darrien hughes that anyone who doesn't think that hon. trevor mallard said was not an insinuation of lying, doesn't have half the intelligence i attribute to the hon darrien hughes"

Lockwood Smith is probably the best speaker we've had in recent memory: he doesn't suffer fools, administers the house with a degree of humour, and actually forces ministers to answer questions.

  • Speaker should have named him

  • Trevor Mallard would make a excellent leader of the opposition

  • @Vvardenfell430 Indeed. He would be so good at keeping that job, come election time

  • The speaker reacted with great class.

  • To be 'named' is to have your pay docked in the house ...

I think that it was bull shit that a member can be removed from the house for something he didnt say... interms of the speaker say that it was implied is crap because it could also be interpreted in different ways... the speaker should have been specific to the comment and the member should have been given the opportunity to clarify and withdraw it.

  • I agree totally with you. Punishing a member on false accusations should not be allowed. The PM in this case should have been named for making the false accusation.

  • @nextbay I think its bullshit that someone can be kicked out of the house for calling someone a liar. I guess he could have said 'you arent telling the truth' which is the same as lying, but he wouldn't be kicked out for it.

  • even MPs !! ; )

quote from 'A Man For All Seasons'

  • "...even give the devil, benefit of law.."

  • what does it mean to have someone "named"? does he have to sit under the flagpole during lunchtime or something?
