Not really. The Brits have been forming rock bands for decades and if you knew that the song is about Reagan's control of Ms. Thatcher .. then you'd understand it as a protest song. Not ironic at all.

Rock is an American genre. The fact that American styles of music (and their derivatives), diet, and other forms of culture have taken over is not really a coincidence. It's what's known as "soft power."

"Soft Power" hahah! In 2009 that's the SILLIEST comment I've heard. If you were talking about Iran, Vietnam or Chile maybe .. BUT England? No. They've sort of been interlocked with the US since that little revolution thing. And they've had rock bands since soon after white people sped up the blues and called it their own.
So it's not ironic but in fact so normal that it's passe or dull to even car about an English rock band and to comment about "Soft Power" on a 20 year old video is just silly.

Not ridiculous at all. The best weapon the USA has always had, has been Hollywood, not the A-bomb. Between that, and the records that came over with the British merchant fleet (including George Harrison's dad), and present day TV channels which show little but American programmes, the UK very much is the 51st State. " a 20 year old video" - Now there you're really being American! Us Europeans tend to think twenty years isn't that long. Americans do though! They live in an eternal present.

I don´t know why it is a kind of problem - natural Americans are Indians. They weren´t engaged in Rock.. ;-) The Brits took over the land, and since then the american history is a british one. I know that history isn´t that charming.. ;-)

The Brits have practiced a great deal of "soft power" in my part of the world. Now we speak their language almost perfectly, and 70/80% of our TV programming comes from them. The Americans learnt their cultural imperialism from the best...
