  • I already know a fair amount about the Coptic Orthodox Church. I have visited all three of those churches. I attended the consecration of the altar in Pleasanton by Pope Shenouda III a couple of years ago. I am actually considering joining the COC. I was Baptized and Chrismated in in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America 2 years ago, but have since changed my mind about the Council of Chalcedon and now identify with Oriental Orthodoxy.

  • God bless you, you are always welcome.

  • Amen!

  • A thing of beauty is a joy for ever. Almighty God bless the composer and singer of this mighty melody. Also all the listeners. Make more songs for us. Thanks Baby( Roman catholic Syrian Christian) Kerala India

  • What is the difference between coptic and orthodox?

  • Coptic is from the word "Agyptos" which means Egyptian, so the Coptic orthodox church is the orthodox church of Egypt, there are other orthodox Churches such as Greek, Ethiopian, Russian.

  • Well, with respect to the Greeks and Copts it is more of an ethnic issue than a regional one. Both the Coptic Orthodox and the Greek Orthodox have been in Egypt claiming the Patriarchate for over 1500 years. So both are "Egyptian" in the sense of the land. But the Copts are the native Egyptian people, whereas the Greeks were there as a result of Alexander's conquests.

  • The Patriarchate was established by St. Mark, and all the popes that came after him and they were all Coptic Orthodox. The Greek Orthodox have their own patriarchate and their own pope in Antioch. However both the Greek orthodox or Coptic orthodox who live in Egypt or who have Egyptian parents are Egyptians by the "sense of land."

  • Actually, there has been both a Greek and Coptic Patriarchate of Alexandria since the time of the schism over Chalcedon.

  • Then this means that Copts and Greeks are not claiming over the patriarchate as you wrote before, since both Coptic and Greek orthodox churches have different patriarchates in Egypt, but of course the Greek Church in Egypt is related to the mother Greek Orthodox patriarchate and pope.

The mother coptic church is located in Egypt, and all coptic orthodox churches around the world are related to the mother Coptic patriarchate and the pope (Pope Shenouda III) in Egypt.

  • Actually, the Greek Orthodox in Egypt are completely independent of any foreign church; their Bishop of Alexandria is entirely autonomous and autocephalous and has been such since the schism. As such, the Coptic Orthodox Church is not THE ONE Orthodox church of Egypt, but rather one of along with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria.

  • Well, the Coptic Orthodox Church is the original church of Egypt originated from the native Egyptians who converted to Christianity by St. Mark the apostle. All Christians were united before the council of chalcedon, but after it, the church divided into Orthodox and catholic churches. The Church in Egypt was named the Coptic Orthodox Church and the church of Greece was named the Greek orthodox church. Throughout history some religious minorities immigrated to Egypt and lived there.

  • No, you still don't understand. For one thing, the split was between the Oriental Orthodox and what would become the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics. The split between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics came 600 years later.

  • Secondly, I am not speaking of the Church of Greece. That is only one of the Greek Orthodox churches. There is also the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria has been in Egypt since at least the 5th century and is entirely independent from the Church of Greece.

  • What is important here is that you said that both Coptic and Greek orthodox are CLAIMING the patriarchate, which is completely wrong. Of course the Coptic orthodox church is completely independent of the Greek orthodox, because it has its own Pope (Pope Shenouda). The majority of christians in Egypt are Coptic Orthodox, and other religious minorities immigrated to Egypt throughout history. BTW, when people refer to christians in Egypt they always mean the Copts. Please read more about Egypt.

  • No, it is not wrong. There is both a Coptic church and a Greek church claiming to be the legitimate Patriarchate of Alexandria.

  • Well, based on what you are saying, you definitely did not live in Egypt, because if you have lived there you would have noticed that non-christian Egyptians think only about Copts when they talk about christians in Egypt. Also Copts in Egypt do not know that there is a Greek Orthodox church in Egypt. Note, I noticed from your Page that you live in pleasant hill, the nearest Coptic chruches to you are in Concord, pleasanton and hayward. So you are always welcome to visit.

  • Also if you want to learn more about the Coptic church visit send me a message and I will give you some links. There is also an Egyptian Coptic festival that take place in each of those churches every year. Send me a message if you want to learn more about the Coptic church and Egyptians.

  • So you are arguing against me now on the basis of your ignorance? As if the fact that you are ignorant of the reality of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria means that it's ok for you to say that it does not exist? And that it's ok for you to brush off my correction even though I've been right about it all along?

  • When you visit Egypt you will understand.

  • @Rahula I have never heard this before, this must be a funny joke! Coptic means Egyptian, Alexandria is in Egypt! Case closed!

  • @hot0pharaoh

I'm tired of such useless bantering with you people. So let's discuss some evidence. It seems plain reason won't convince you. The current Coptic Orthodox Patriarch of Pope Shenouda III, no? If so, then tell me who you think the man who is called "Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria" is?

  • @Rahula with all due respect to the Patriarch Theodore, he is the Greek orthodox. Not the Coptic Patriarch. As you know, The coptic, are Coptic Orthodox! Please do not take all of our arguments to heart. WE love you guys and someday we'll be fully reunited. We are one body!!! I also heard that the Coptic Church and the Greek Church came into an agreement a couple of months ago :) Have a great week!

  • @hot0pharaoh

It seems you are assuming that I am part of the Greek church. But I am not.

I am much more associated with the Coptic church if anything. I go to the local Coptic church most Sundays.

I know he is not the Coptic Patriarch. But you said that Pope Shenouda III is the only Patriarch of Alexandria, as if you did not know of the Greek Patriarch.

  • this is a lovely song, God bless all.

I have just experienced coptic church and thought it was very enlightening

  • what church is that at the beginning?

  • @archmikhail that church is the church in egypt i forgot what its called but pope shenouda went there.
