In the 50's Russia and the complete Europe had been destroyed by War world II including most of the facotories and economy, they were busy rebuilding. US was never touched by the war, they factories were intact, and Europe had to import most of the industrial products from America. However the Soviets led the space race and did have higher growth, more land and manpower at that time. But ok, since Khrushchev himself admitted himself in 1961 that the Soviets where behind, I guess I'm wrong (Tompson 1997, pp. 237–239). But look, it wasn't that bad. Not as North Korea now. It was a superpower with a strong economy and alot of resources.

Russia had international trade and natural resources. North Koreans are starving. what else can I say.....
