  • I like your choice of guitar on this one.

  • A-Maz-ing!

  • Great work here! It's by far my favourite johnson solo, it's so well written it's like a piece on it's own. Do you have a video of johnson playing this live? I would kill for a copy!

Please keep doing his covers, you can certainly pull them off.

    Best

  • You nailed it dude. Except for the end where it sustains into a sweet harmonic. So l

Your not perfect! Just kidding, great job .

  • You are the coolest person ever, you play like a boss, you love Eric Johnson, and you're incredibly humble, great job dude!

  • wow your sound and playing are just like his. how did get the fingering and amp sound to be so similar? was it always intentional?

  • @wileypayote

Thanks Wiley - imitation is greatest form of flattery isn't it? Eric is an incredible musician and I am still miles away from him. Re the fingering, I work out his solos by ear but I'm pretty sure I get a decent chunk wrong anyways. My sound is intentionally made to be close to his because I love the violin tone. It's really the only tone/sound I like on electric (when it comes to overdriven sounds).

  • it's great !! please check my one too !

  • I memorized the solo but I can only play it at like 20% speed. You are talented. Keep at it!

  • Your amazing man!! Have always loved this tune and wish I could play this solo!!

  • Amazing sound. I love this guitar.

  • awesome tone, nice playing

  • Amazing job~

  • Dude, great job.

  • nice tone, what are you playing through?

  • EXCELLENT COVER! SHIT HOT!!!

  • This is unbelievable. Such a nice tone too.

  • fantastic solo.. well done

  • Absolutely amazing, you can feel the dedication, two thumbs up!

  • bien mijo jajajaja

  • That's Eric's most inspired solo, and I'm going back to the drawing board - you've inspired me!

  • really awesome exept some parts where i think u should use that kind of hybrid pick/finger technic eric johnson uses but man its an awesome tone and globally it was good .

Do u have any guitar tab that would really help me man :)

  • Eric's best solo...very well done!

  • This is the best solo (my opinion)

  • WOW! Well done.

  • Impressive.

  • SSvr. I know this has probably been asked of you a million times, but what is your amplifier setup and are you using any effects? Delay I assume, but I've got to be nosy here.

I can play this tune now but frankly to hear myself play it frustrates me to death. The tone is nowhere near as good as the one you've got going here.

  • Sounds modeled to me. Maybe a POD. I can get this type tone out of my POD 2.0 using the Deluxe Reverb setting drive all the way up and the 2nd drive almost all the way up, a bit o verb and some delay. I should say I'm using a maple board strat with lace sensors. Even better, this same strat through my wampler ecstasy drive into my real Deluxe Reverb sounds EJ, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton-tastic

  • ssvr: I transcribed this one by ear, bar by bar.

    I said: MY ASS!!!

  • Hah, funny part is that its true. I have seen no complete tab for this song, unfortunately.. it's so beautiful, ssvr does EJ amazingly.

  • Thanks xgi, appreciate the input. The truth is that my playing is far from ideal covering Eric but at the same time, I really don't have much time for guitar and only get to play on weekends for the most part. However, I have been following Eric for a long time (almost 2 decades) which has helped me with transcribing his solos. The message I would have for people who want to play his material is to be persistent, over time it will come

  • You kick ass, dude. I think the solo's on Venus Isle are the most complex EJ has ever recorded. That guitar looks like something Eric Johnson would have in his collection, too.

  • I love it! In my opinion it's Eric's best. He really just drops his trick bag for this solo, and it's criminally underrated. Glad to see someone really sink their teeth into it.

  • Have you perfect pitch?

  • Incredible!

  • Beautiful playing man. Absolutely brilliant.

Question: Where did you get access to the music score / tabs for the outro solo? I really wanna try playin it myself too.

Cheers man! All the best! \m/

  • Neo, thanks. I don't use any tab books. Hal Leonard, to me, does not live up to its claim that it provides 'authentic' transcriptions as far as Eric is concerned. So, as with every other solo, I transcribed this one by ear, bar by bar.

  • Awesome! Did you actually write any of that down my friend? In other words, I'm just wondering if there is anyway I can learn to play the way you just have (apart from transcribing it bar by bar by ear myself).

    Cheers dude.

  • Don't have time to write anything down and transcribe by ear only. Try it, it's a fun exercise.

  • Alright. Thanks anyway dude!

  • You're right ssvr, this song is really beautiful and Eric Johnson is one the best guitarist around.

Excelent playing btw, keep on making great vids like this one!

  • To Marprs1 and everyone below, thanks for the kind comments. More videos coming in the next few months.

  • Really good playing of a most beautiful Johnson solo.

  • Very very good playing. This solo by Johnson is my facourite of all, and you need both very good technique and feel to play it. You got it. :-)

  • Great playing!

  • Thanks. I transcribe exclusively by ear but I've heard of software that lets you slow down the music while retaining pitch, that could be helpful. Watching Eric is a great way to get a sense of his fretting hand. Keep trying and above all, have fun with the process.

  • Props. I have no idea how you hear all those fast EJ passages in real time. Guess I just don't got the ear.

  • Awesome. How do you go about transcribing records (licks, chords, basically everything in a song) Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • For stuff this harmonically complex, not to mention fast, you're going to need a hell of a set of ears. Luckily, programs like Transcribe! allow you to slow things down.

Still, ear training is often horribly neglected by players and takes patience. Most people can only memorize around 11 notes in a sequence before they start to forget things. So work it out literally bar by bar. Before you know it, 11 notes becomes 22, and so on.

My best advice? Don't start with this. Keep it simple for now.

  • Nice, very nice
