Great drummer. Interesting ideas but this is NOT Mozambique in the Afro Cuban sense. This is typical 6/8 bell pattern sometimes referred to as bembe bell pattern. Mozambique style in Afro Cuban sense (created by pelo the afikan) is completley different. These patterns can be confusing enough! Please if a pattern is clearly derivative of Afro Cuban style use the Afro Cuban term so we can all understand.
hi, nice playing but sorry its not mozambique but the typical afro cuban six eight bell with a funky backbeat. the mozambique new york style bell is in 4/4 and is RlRlRRlRlRRlRRlR greetings from munich
LOL around 3:00, when he said he could go faster, i was like holy crap. But i can't remember theres a beat that is like ba ba, da da ba ba, du du, ba ba, da da ba ba. Could u make a video on that? or the name of the beat.
hey everybody... first of all, thanx to everyone for your positive comments and compliments. Even though I may not respond to each one individually, I read'em all and I really appreciate it. It's extremely gratifying. BTW, if anyone has been tuning in to the NBC competitive singing reality show THE VOICE, I appreciate that as well. The show is an amazing adventure. Great band, fun tunes, talented singers... no complaints. This week begins "the battle rounds". ooooh! The plot thickens!
Truly amazing and fun, Nate; thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent with us! I really want to practice this impressive and versatile pattern.
I`m not sure it`s the nanugo either. I have the notation for that. I haven`t been able to figure out what it is. You could call it the `Mortonbique`. Anyway, it`s awesome when Nate plays it. I`ve worked on it for 2 weeks now and am loving it. I like how it changes so much with different voicings. It takes a lot of practice to master changing the voices without messing it up. Keep up the great work Nate. Your proficiency and spirit is a credit to drumming. You were amazing on Rockstar!
@n8drums No problem, in your Bonnie Hunt show video, you really tore it up on those Pearl VMX drums. It shows the young folks that they don't need the most expensive kit to sound great, just the practice and skills.
My wife and I loved you on the show Rock Star. You were the best part of the whole show . I am a professional drummer in Cleveland. this is some great playing but I'm pretty sure the proper name for this particular rhythm is the nanugo. God Bless you brother!!
My wife and I loved you on the show Rock Star you were the best part of the whole show . I am a professional drummer in Cleveland. this is some great playing but I'm pretty sure the proper name for this particular rhythm is the nanugo.
hahaha... i've been corrected a million times on what it's called and everyone tells me it's called something different. At the end of the day, I honestly don't know, but I'm really glad you dug it. BTW, I used to live in Kent, OH... WAAAAAY back when. Back when the Terminal Tower was the tallest building in Cleveland. My pops used to work with the Cleveland board of Education. Thanx again for the compliments! Much appreciation and best of luck with everything!
Nañigo- it's an term that represents a certain dialect in Cuba. These specific rhythms are, as Nate describes, played in 6/8. Great job with this, Nate. This is a great representation of what a Nañigo should sound like. Continued success, my friend.
thanx Nate. I have one question, but sorry if you think this is such a dumb question. How long you normally take to set up your kit like that? i believe you have some crews for it.
Well, that kit stays set up most of the time on stage at Caesars Palace, but when it does have to be torn down or set up, I have a fabulous drum tech, Steve Rainz, who takes care of my gear. He's the best!
too many people hating on the bembe thing. you are KILLING man! i saw this video a couple years back and borrow from your examples(as best i can) a lot. i love your style!
Doesn't Martin Lopez do a similar beat in alot of his Opeth songs? Notably like Baying of the Hounds and Demon of the Fall? Great Video, the sound created by you and the miking works a charm and is amazing. :-D
Sounded stunning, you really just kept the same sticking throughout all of that nuts solo (aside from the obvious bursts of singles!)?! Cant wait to give this a try.
Although, it's not the mozambique pattern, its the nanigo! Still, whatever you're calling it doesnt affect that you got it sounding fantastic!
LOL.. yeah, someone else told me it's something else too... sorry about that. They said it was a Bembe.... i've never even heard of that. Either way, i'm stoked you dug it and I hope it's something you can use and incorporate into your playing! Thanx a bunch!
Thanx so much. I don't really do online lessons... not exactly sure how I would. It's difficult to teach and effectively exchange specific ideas with someone without being in the same room with them. If I can figure out the right way to do it, I'd be open to trying.
Nate, you are one of my favourites drummers of this generation! Love your playing on Rockstar, and you absolutely blew me away at the 2 Singapore Drum Fests! Hope to catch u at the next one! Your energy is amazing!
A while back someone made a snarky comment about the amount of compression on the drums, and I just wrote an equally snarky reply. After posting, I thought better of it. When I attempted to delete my reply, I accidentally deleted the original snarky comment... something about compression and actually occasionally hearing a "transient". I'm sure everyone is impressed with your use of the term transient, so please feel free to repost your comment.
Hey Nate, you sound great! but the rhythm your demonstrating here is the Bembe bell pattern, not Mozambique. The Original Cuban Mozambique was developed by Pello el Afrokán, in the early 60's. Both the original Mozambique and drumset adaptations by people like Steve Gadd, Robby Ameen, and Dafnis Prieto are in duple meter (4/4 time), not 6/8 or 12/8. But man, your Blazing, sounds great!
Damn dude, nice playing! One question though....what do you do with your feet when you're playing the mozambique solo? Do you play some sort of patterns or you just improvise?
when I'm playing this pattern, 99% of the time, if i'm playing the kick, i'm just doubling it with my right hand. Pretty straight forward unless i'm departing from the idea to play some other kind of combination.
Nate!!! what's new? Looks like you got some good stuff going on. I've been watching American Idol the past few years... the house band hasn't been the same without you!! Any more "RockStar" gigs coming up???
I've been asked about the set up in the video. This is the drum set I current play behind Cher at Caesar's Palace. It consists of the following: DRUMS: Pearl Masters Custom 24 Primary Kick 20 Auxiliary kick (used as an electronic trigger) 14 x 6 1/2 Reference solid brass primary snare 13 x 6 1/2 Reference wood auxiliary snare 10 x 4 Auxiliary, auxiliary snare drum 10 rack tom 12 rack tom 13 rack tom 16 floor tom 18 floor tom
CYMBALS 16 A Custom crash/16 Z Custom crash (hats) 12 A custom splash /12 A Custom splash (hats) 11 K Hybrid splash 12 K splash 20 Oriental China Trash 20 A Custom China 16 SFX Crash 18 A Custom crash 20 A Custom crash 22 K Custom ride 21 A Sweet ride 19 K Hybrid crash 18 SFX crash RhythmTech mounted Pro Tambourine
Everything is mounted on the Pearl ICON drum rack including the mics.
The set-up on the riser also includes two video monitors. One shows me my drum tech Steve who is back stage, and the other shows our musical conductor Paul Mirkovich. Incidentally, back stage Steve has 3 video monitors. 1 is the full stage, and the other two are feeds from two video cameras focused on the drum kit. We also both have microphones to communicate to one another.
Hahaha Nate, you are always so modest! Great playing as always, Good Job!
Oh you actually played this pattern during last year during the Singapore Drum Fest and I managed to capture it on video (short clip though). Should I post it up too ?
