First of all:

Stay near an airport- you will be spending a lot of time in Manhattan, but it's at least $150 a night to stay there. That's why there are subways. Cabs are too expensive.

Now, here's how to spend less than $35 a day in NYC:

Don't get room service. For breakfast, pick up a famous NY bagel and shmear for just around $3

Lunch is easy- a hot dog in Central Park for about $5

Dinner for around $20 if you go to Queens or the Village

Here are some tips to save $: Go to only the museums that have a suggested price cause then u only have to give a quarter.1 that I know that does this is the metropolitan museum of art.Also,u can go to Newark (where the NJDevils play) but don`t plan an entire day there, just go and say u were there really and it is easy to get to.Take the PATH train at the World Trade Center site. New York is overrated and is given too much credit and hype , So many first time visitors to New York make plans to visit Times Square almost as soon as they unpack their suitcases. My question is why? So what do you get to see? Well, IMO, a lot of other tourists milling about wondering what on earth all the fuss is about! There are lots of souvenir shops where you'll pay way too much for (often cheesy) gifts. The restaurants are RIDICULOUSLY over-priced and the food is terrible!

I drive a yellow taxi in New York City.

Most taxi rides in Manhattan are less than $10. I think the statistical average is about $7-8. That means if you are in a group of 3 or 4 people, it might actually be CHEAPER for you to take a cab, rather then using subway or a bus.

It is OK to ask a cab driver in advance, how much the fare will be. The driver will be happy to give you an estimate.
