So glad I found your channel...I grew up in Chicago back in the 1970's,and moved away back 25 years ago. Its so nice to see this neighborhood again, I lived on West Winnemac ave, ans we used to walk to the Uptown theatre and shop at Goldblatts.
the condons are making people that are from the neighbor hood move out. that was one of the reasons why people in 07 used to rob white folks to scare them away.
I lived at the apartments next door to the Peoples' Church @ 941 W. Lawrence for five months in 2007 while working at BP Whiting. I volunteered at the homeless shelter (REST) in the basement of the Church at night and during the weekends.
St. Thomas of Canterbury has masses in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Lao. That gives some idea of the ethnic diversity of Uptown.
And you're right. This used to be a leading center of nightlife in Chicago. From 1910 to 1930, it was the second best district, right after the Loop, for movies, theater, dancing, music, shenanigans.
The Green Mill is on the site of a beer garden where, in the 1890s, people would stop for a drink on the long trip to Milwaukee. It seated around a thousand, I think, but had to stop serving liquor during prohibition. It then became the famous jazz/blues venue that it remains.
