Um...after reading the comments...Caccini was not a post Renn composer he was a transitional composer who had most of his career in the Renn Elizabethan Era and only his latter work was post.
@cloud9er Actually woyopol is absolutely right - this is not a Caccini work. It was written by a Russian guitarist and lutist Vladimir Vavilov in the 70s. For whatever reasons, he would often attribute his works to post-rennaissance composers, and did the same thing with this Ave Maria. Check out Wikipedia for more info.

@FabDN41 That's probably the reason Vavilov was afraid to publish it under his own name and labeled it as "by anonymous" at his lute music record which was actually full of hoaxes. "Canzona by Francesco da Milano" was probably the most famous one. I remember how much time I spent trying to find it amongst Da Milano's pieces to figure out at the end of the day that it only exists at Vavilov's record :-)

Initially - when the aria was published in the 70s - it was published anonymously, most likely to conceal Vavilov's identity given anti-religious sentiments in the Soviet Union. There's plenty of information online about this if you want to read more about the whole situation.

Vavilov couldn't get through the soviet bureaucracy (talent wasn't nearly enough there to be published, you would be made to prove your ideological reliability and/or you had to be well-connected in soviet elite), so he pretended to have "discovered" creations of baroque composers.

But you are right that one can't say for sure without a rigorous study. What is interesting is that there are no early recordings of this piece, pre-1970. Surely, if it were really written a long time ago, we'd see some older recordings?

You're so lost. Andrea Bocelli is singing in the video. Vladimir is a COMPOSER, which means he wrote the music, but some say that the music was actually written by Caccini. Therefore, no one ever said Vladimir was singing.

@hetismij21 I wonder how ppl can watch a performance in a Catherdal. The last time i went to watch a guitar performance in spain, the echo is so annoying that i left before the concert end. Maybe this is a modified one for performance.

Normally, I love Bocelli, but I don't this key was very good. It's not exactly impressive, it sounds a bit like he neeeds to open up a bit more.
Still love the singer, but not this particular performance.

I'm just sharing my opinion, just as you have an opinion as well. I didn't even insult him at all.
And believe me, I've listening to enough of Bocelli's performances to know that this is not his best. And I've listened to enough renditions of Vavilov's Ave Maria to at least somewhat know the song.
I've never called myself a professional critic, nor do I claim to be now. I'm just sharing my opinion. So what if you don't agree?

Not a very moving singing. His spirit isn't fully engaged, not profound. Sorry to say but this beautiful song is best rendered not by popular singers like Bocelli, but unknown singers, many of whom are on YoutTube .....such as Gubello, and Laskowska

Caccini didn't compose this, but did he compose the version in G minor? (this version) Andrea Bocelli has a really great voice but I prefer hearing this sung by a woman, like Sumi Jo.

You're so lost. Andrea Bocelli is singing in the video. Vladimir is a COMPOSER, which means he wrote the music, but some say that the music was actually written by Caccini. Therefore, no one ever said Vladimir was singing.
