  • this was on the chum chart in toronto. it went to number 1. it was on the chart for 10 weeks. august 1970. great song.

  • According to the Billboard's Book of Top 40 Hits, this song made its debut in the top-40 on 11/7/70, the same week that the Guess Who debuted with "Share The Land".

  • Just heard this song for the first time in my life, and I've been alive since 1965. It was played on Sirius XM Radio's reprise of Casey Kasem's American Top 40 show from this week in 1970 when it peeked at 31. I can't beleive it didn't go any higher, it's a wonderful song.

  • i heard this song in a boit a chanson in the 70ds

  • De esas rarezas agradables q aparecen de vez en cuando por estos lados.

  • I remember hearing this years ago. I assumed it was from the '60's.Another great find

  • from Montreal, if i remember correctly!

  • @signupsucksass Yes, they were from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

  • This is the longer version compared to the shorter version, which mas more commonplace here.

  • Loved Mashmakhan since I first heard them many, many moons ago. I have had the pleasure of knowing Jerry Mercer and seeing him in various other bands since then. This band was really something in it's day and even now!!!!

  • Oops, I meant I watched it Everyday!!! Still the best thing ever!!!

  • I watched festival express for the first time prolly 6 yers ago...loved it so much...watched it eeryday...sometimes twice...loved them all...Mashmakhan!!!...Janis!!..The Band!!... Buddy guy!!!... And that CCrider girl!!!... Sooooo much!!! I even watched it twice everyday for a while on the weekend!!! It's a treasure!!! Nothing compares, because of Masmakhan!!! Not even woodstock!!! Sooooo awesome!!!

  • I saw these guys play at "The Saxony" in Rouses Point N.Y. back in 68-69 ! Awesome !

  • @mopart426 thanks for the info...I am from Malone but didn't know about them at the time

  • @mopart426 thanks for sharing....I am from Malone but didn't kno about them at the time

  • The drummer, Jerry Mercer, went on to play with April Wine. My mom "dated" him, whatever that means. :-O

Anyway, you've gotta love a band named after a kind of hash. Light it up!

  • @huntclubjoe - I remember a book about Canadian music that claimed they took Mashmakhan from the Caribbean pronunciation of a medicinal bush from Bermuda called "match-me-if-you-can", but I woudn't doubt if it was also the name of a variety of weed. Who knows?

  • Triangle

  • Great video ! Great song and good memories !!

  • I have this on Epic 10634 with a shorter intro, sounds like it might be a different take. I don't think this ever hit in Louisville, Kentucky but I remember hearing it on Joe Donovan's overnight program years ago on 84 WHAS. Great song and a one hit wonder for sure.

  • Great song. First heard this in grad. school on the once great WHB-710 AM, Kansas City, which was oldies in 1989. The station played the big hits like MONY MONY and Elvis but also played the smaller hits, like this gem.

  • "As the Years Go By" was to have been released in the U.S. on Columbia as well, on single #4-45186, but just before its designated release as such was cancelled and transferred to what it ultimately became known as - Epic 5-10634.

  • Excellent...and it brings back such great memories...this has such a Halloweenish intro.

  • THANK YOU.

  • Was in high school in Odessa ont when this was a hit

  • Gracias a quien colgó esta hermosa canción. Estuvo en moda en pleno verano del 70 o 71 y sonada por una radio llamada DELCAR, de Chiclayo-Perú

  • Best damn drummer ive heard!!Jerry Mercer!!! Saw him with april Wine, he put on a killer solo!!!! Him and John Panozzo did competing solos on that tour, if you missed it..... DOH!! I wonder if they have any of thier stuff as The Triangle online....

  • Psychedelic Psunday with Andy Frost !

  • @ObltKG4 Has revealed so many classics to me

  • tubiejonny - I do know the meaning of the word retard, and in the IDD community it is an insult that educated people no longer use as an insult to call people. Sorry, but I am not a hater, and don't want to mistakenly sound like one, so I don't use words that can be misconstrued.MUSIC, NOT NAME-CALLING, IS WHAT I AM ABOUT. SORRY. PEACE... DAVEDJ

  • I've been looking for this song to download for literally, five years. Thank you!

  • Is this what masqueraded as music in the early 70's???

    Bad song. 0/5

  • @lukeskywalker91 Because it is from the early 70's.....? What is your question? And it is not a bad song, its a good song 5/5

Try learning an instrument or listen to something other that hip-hop rap shit....then you might appreiate good music, not just digital base drum retard crap.

  • @tubiejonny my question was quite clear. Is this what masqueraded as music?

Why do you assume I listen to hip-hop or rap?

  • @lukeskywalker91 No it was not masqueraded as music....it is music. Is my answer as clear as your question?

  • @tubiejonny Is music is subjective, even if it "is music" it is really very poor.

I have listened to a few selections from 1970-1971 and this song pales in comparison to them.

Such as:The Temptations - Just My Imagination (Great track, #9 on the top 100 from 1971)

Aint No Sunshine, Bill Withers (#23 on that list)

Proud Mary, Ike and Tina Turner(#55 on that list)

These selections are great, As the years go by pales in comparison to these. there are many more that outshine it as well.

  • @lukeskywalker91 You must be kidding? You forgot some MiniPops songs on that list.

....and Proud Mary is not by Ike or Tina, its by John Fogerty.

I can see where your tastes lay. You may enough the newest Raffi CD.

  • @tubiejonny Proud Mary, while written and originally recorded by John Fogerty, was also covered by Ike and Tina Turner. Their recording of Proud Mary turned out to be their biggest hit.

  • @tubiejonny TOTALLY AGREE BUT NO "RETARD." NOT GOOD/RESPECT DAVEDJ

  • @Multi1628 Why no retard? I think you don't know the meaning of the word retard.

  • That's Gerry Mercer on drums....later on a member of the Canadian Rock Group April Wine.....I'm such a super fan !!!!!

  • thx, i've been looking for this.

  • way to go

  • True, what a great song....

  • Good Song・・^^

  • @thesoulroller I had the same experience. I heard this song only a few times on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 in 1970 and loved it - however, the local station did not play it regularly. It's good to finally hear it again.

  • I remember when this came out. Oops!

    Great tune.

  • This is my favourite song ever! And it has been since it came out in 1970. It has a great rhythm/instrumentals, good lyrics, and is catchy and unpretentious. So many memories....................

  • Can someone tell me what year this song was recorded in? Thanks

  • Don't know when it was recorded, but it was on American radio in the fall of 1970.

  • I saw them with Steppenwolf ( and a few others ) at this big gig in Montreal in 1969 and they played As The years Go By ..

  • Canadian Classic this one! Im 34 and have loved this song since I was a kid as with most oldies.

  • Could be the booze (I'm kinda drunk right now lol) but this song kinda brought a tear to my eye.

This song is so powerful and meaningful.

I was born about 15 years after it was released, but this is one of my all time favourite songs.

We could really use music like this today.

  • @wilkes85

    Do you like Supertramp?

  • yes, Supertramp is awesome!

Actually, speaking of Supertramp, their song "Lord is it mine" is my aunt and uncle's wedding song.

  • @wilkes85

I have a special edition of Breakfast in America. It is the A&M Audiophile Series - with a gatefold sleeve for lyrics and a disc printed in Japan.

Daddy Cool is recommended, alongside Masters and Apprentices.

  • Shit. I wrote 'and'. Fuck.

  • everyone on this comment page lists their age :) i'm 21 and my mum used to sing this to me when i was a baby :P

  • im 13 and this is one of my fav songs! its so romantic and poetic, i love it.

  • Such a cool, one of a kind song. I'm 37 by the way lol

  • I'll love you till the end

  • Saw Masmakhan in Montreal at their peak and before then they were known as the *Triangle*, and they played James Lyng High School. Great band. The drummer Jerry Mercer went on to the super band "April Wine" but I always liked his early stuff.

  • I really like this song, thanks. And to think I am only 38..lol

  • @saxonfan

You mean, this song is older than you? But you like it anyway? Great! You're never too young to have good taste !!!

  • @57highland

Im 26 and i love it, i always love to expand my musical univers, but with time its hard to keep track of all these amazing songs...

  • @whitetigers18 Holy shit thats awesome... O.O

  • @whitetigers18 Well, I happen to be the singer

  • good aold son!! my baby told me about it :)

  • one of my favorite old songs!

  • I cover this with acoustic guitar, because its one of my favourite songs of all time.

  • Care to share your cover? I can't quite image how an acoustic version would sound, but I would be very interested in learning.

  • It's pretty crude, but one of these days I'll do it for you. I do it in a different key.

  • I play this song in my car it's really good like other mashmakan songs

  • Haven't heard this song since I stopped listening to the radio. The radio edit is also shorter than this. I've never heard this entire song before. Fuck you old radio station.

  • I was just entering high school when this came out...thanks for posting. Like the way you snuck

    Gambit & Rogue in there!

  • the lyrics are awesome in this song and the organ gives it a cool and unusual sound. all in all great song.

  • a good friend of mine saw them live in the early 70's at Regina Saskatchewan and said they put on a really great show

  • Does this predate Can Con?

  • I think it does. The MAPL system was put into place in 1971.

  • I don't know a time when this song did not exist. It was old when I was young, it just is now that I am a man. This is rock and roll history.

  • OMD!! This is one of my all-time favorites from the early 70's. The thing I love about this tune are the killer vocals & those amazing keyboards & organs riffs throughtout this incredible pop classic. Thanks for posting, cheers from Gary in PA USA

  • I loved this song. Went out and bought a re-issued 45 many years ago. Cool organ and neat words. Thanks for the video.

  • Great song. When I heard it on the radio in 1970, I thought it was by Vanilla Fudge.

  • Great! I love this song... but this is a different version to the album! Is there a way to get this version?

  • In 1970 I was 13 when this was song got prime playtime on 1050 CHUM. Brings back memories. Thanks for posting.

  • My father grew up listening to Chum! I hear they played a lot of good stuff.

  • In the fall of 1970, I was 9 when this song came out. Brings back memories of me, entering the fourth grade.

  • Helivz, it was released two years before I was born...and I still have a lot of memories of this song. They don't write music like this any more...

  • Q107's favourite song of late.

  • I guess there wasn't any Rush left to play.

  • Or Tragically Hip. I hate how they stick that band in to their roster. Everything's classic rock, but then they stick in that band for the cancon.

  • Long story part 3

Then one day going through my parents old stacks of 45s that I had been through hundreds of times I see as big as life MASHMAKAN, AS YEARS GO BY, All that time the record had been right in my room

  • Cool story!!! Good music, like true love, will never die. This is a canadian band too,woo hoo!!!!

  • Long story part 2

One day my dad was at work he listened to the radio and heard a song called me (people are always coming to me when they can't think of a song), anyway he said some lyrics to a song and asked if I knew it. Having a hunch I asked if he happened to be listening to AM he was surprised that I knew that he was. The lyrics he said were different then mine. So I quickly typed them up and got the anser to the mysterious song that plagued me for years.

  • Long story part 1

Years ago I would hear this song on AM radio ONLY and would wait for the DJ to say the name or artist of the song but they never did. I went for years not hearing it but always keeping an ear out and I could only remember some of the lyrics so when I got a computer I tryed typing in the lyrics that I knew (never came up with anything)

  • @ShannonDaily Same here... I'd wait & wait.. never knew what it was called nor the name of the band... this song loud on the radio .. always chokes me up..

I heard the name finally about 15 years ago... but thought it was spelled Mash McCann.. Only learned today the right spelling... only learned 2 mins ago that they are Canadian... Named after a type of hashish, the origins of Mashmakhan began in 1960..

anyway - classic song that is fresh to me every time I hear it <3 it!

  • Love this song, my husband and I were just remembering it the other day. Thanks

  • yea, I remember this....Fantastic

  • Ilove all you old farts--im 52 and still play guitar

  • 52's the new 19

  • Thanks so much for posting this song; it is really one of the top songs of the 20th

Century. The words could not be more meaningful and poetic, nor the melody more melodic.

  • Ayto to tragoydi einai ap'ta agapimena moy. Otan eida to Festival Express eixa pa8ei porosi me ayto to tragoydi. Mashmakhan FOREVER !! :)

  • Oh-my-God !!!

  • I remember this song. It's a good one. My hubby has the 45 of it somewhere around here. Good stuff...

  • lol i actually had to call the radio station to see wha this song was called

  • good song!

  • I've only found a few Mashmakhan songs on the internet... does anyone else have any to share?

  • I was born in 1982 and I remember seeing this band in the 70s.

  • This version is different than the album one I have... it's longer.

  • I did not hear it for so long .... WOW!!!!!

  • Mashmakan played at Westmount High in about 1970. Had a look and found this vid. Thanks, eh!

  • Thanks for making this. It's awesome! :)

  • This song is a LOT like Dimmu Borgir's "The Serpentine Offering".

Seriously. Am I the only one who hears the similarities?!

  • Sounds like its in the same key and it follows a similar progression.

    Either way, both kick ass.

    Dimmu \m/!!

  • I love this song... Brings back good memories!

  • This was mine and my husbands "song" in 1970. I hadn't heard it for many years until our daughter downloaded it as a Christmas gift 3 years ago. I enjoyed the "video" version. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Love this song, the group is From Montreal, CANADA. Did you guys know that.

  • I did actually, and heard about it on the radio. It was on the CBC if my memory serves me right.

  • Yeah, I remember them well. My boyfriend Ivan did light shows (Ivan & Company - I was the Company - and I remember doing the lights for them at Pierrefonds High School! LOL!

  • yeah man! that is insane!!!

    fuckn lysergic! uuuuou

  • my copy was pressed quickly

  • I love this song....actually bought it online on Ebay a few years ago along with a 1978 record player just so I could listen to it!

  • This is the unedited single version of "As The Years Go By". The album version is clocked at 3:03.

  • Could someone upload "Mr.Tree" from The family album ?

  • too bad this stuff isnt available on mp3 or cd.

  • but it is : /

  • I fucking love this song.

  • This song brings back unusual memories. Back in 1971 I saw the movie Time Machine, the 1960 version. The next day I heard this song, and to this day associate the song with the movie and vice versa. This song (as well as the movie) is another fine classic.

  • For some reason I always associated this song with some movie too.I just don't remember which one. Some safari flick,I think...

  • MAN! You have no idea! When I was 9 or 10{'71}I "MADE" a cassette that had this with Dave and Ansel Collins "Double Barrel" on it from the old KFIV in Modesto,Ca.I lost the tape for 27 years! and when I found it,I still didn't know who did these songs.Neither did my slightly older friends. My Kazaa search found nothing for a long time.I finally did get "Double Barrel" and Bloodrock's "D.O.A." by trial and error.Until a few minutes ago I thought I'd never find the title or artist.THANK YOU!

  • Well, at least you spelled half the words right.

  • this song isn't just a generic hallmark celebration of love. listen to the lyrics you hippie idiots

  • It's true, true love never dies, good music never dies and subpar messages never die

  • Thanks for the video. I remember this from many years ago and enjoyed it as a kid. Nice to know the long term memory still works.

  • Haha great song, and the verse about teenage boys and girls is so painfully true. ;)

  • Well, just my point....I don't have it backwards, but the lyrics of the song did....that seems to be the message. Like the tune a lot, just feel a lot more thought should have been put into the wording.

  • I think it is more about the meaning of "i love you" and the intentions behind saying it. So ofcourse mothers truly love their children, but saying I love you to your children can also mean something else, such as, you've been a good boy. I think.

  • I've always liked the tune, but have to admit the lyrics leave something to be desired. Husbands and wives really love each other (always?), but mothers don't really, truly love their children?

  • I always felt like my mother never truly loved me, always critizing me and left me in the car when I was a little bitty boy while she was in the bar getting drunk

  • I'm so sorry for that, davesharon. Mothers are supposed to truly love their children, but some don't show it.

  • Odd, that part of the lyrics always came across to me as "A child asks his father..." and "His father answers him..."

  • when I was a "little bitty boy" ?

  • GREAT JOB BRAVO

  • my friend whoever you are THANK YOU VERY MUCH

i remember my teenage period and you can't imagine how much money i spend in jukeboxes to listen this song

  • Incredible video-you did a GREAT job-thanks 4 posting-brings back lots of memories!

  • I was a weekend dj at WFEA in Manchester NH back in l970 when this song came out. the station had just gotten a new CCA transmitter and for some reason, every time we played this song, the transmitter kicked off the air! so the folks in Manchester always got "the short version"....

  • MASH-MAKHAN !!!!!!!!!!
