  • My step-father used to blare this on the weekends. I would ride my bike and could hear it damn near all the way down the street. This brings back some good memories.

  • VH1 played this video all the time on their "Sunday Brunch" show back in the late 80s.

  • Give the man credit for somehow merging western and jazz. That's some creativity right there.

  • nice to be a dabawalla

  • PAT METHENY FTW!

  • My old guitar teacher taught me this song.

I love playing it and learning because of two things:

    1) It's such a beautiful song.

    2) I loved learning it not because it was easy, but because it was hard.

This then, is my signature song on guitar.

  • Its Publix Timeeeeeeeeeeeee Christmas come and get it!!!!!!!!!

  • Beatifull Song <3

  • It premired on VH-1 24 years ago this week. When it was called VH-1 Nouveaux video at the time.

  • I go to school 4 hours and 30 minutes away from my hometown, and this is always the first song I play when I get on the interstate to go home.

  • @51munz

Out of respect for what this instrumental track means to you, I listened once more. I can't like it and will not listen to it again. There is something odd about a brute synth guitar and a pretty average player attempting to copy the particular sound of a noble instrument for effect. I don't want to offend anyone, but to me this is poor, simplistic stuff. Let's just say it's my loss, and leave it there, we can still be friends.

  • @cuculus50

No, it's that you totally don't 'get it'. Once upon a time, I too was much like you. I thought that to be impressive, one must blast through arpeggios as fast as possible. Then, I grew up. Weird things happened, when I grew up. Suddenly, I started to appreciate drinks that weren't extremely sweet. I started to appreciate women who weren't extremely thin. A whole world of understanding opened up that one day, you too will come to know. Until then, keep thinking this is 'simplistic'.

  • @cuculus50 Would you not concur it has a very end of voyage, going home sound ? I think it does and any music that can convey anything these days is good enough for me. I've always remembered this song over the years but it does have a dose of melancholy as in when the credits go up at the end of a sad ending movie.

  • @CharlieMoher In fact, come to think of it, I've fallen into a deep depression after listening to it, so never mind replying.

  • @cuculus50 It's not a synth guitar. It's a Coral Sitar Guitar made back in the 60s. And Metheny is far from a simplistic player. He's considered to be one the best Jazz guitarists on the planet. Check out his "Question & Answer" record for his Bebop playing which is something completely different from this track.

  • this song is my childhood

  • @manabette me too... every time I hear it I think of sitting in the back seat of a car on the highway at 4 years old :)

  • @cuculus50 whats wrong with you

  • I love this music...very relaxing

  • What kind of guitar is that?

  • @grantswede A Coral electric Sitar.

  • Pat, please make more music, but leave the videos for someone else

  • Music fantastic - video could be more stylish.

  • Yeah, bag the video, His producer/director should have done a retake, with him fousing on playing, with an occasional glance. The comment of the stare with the leather pants was frighteningly accurate.

All in all though, the arrangement is fantastic, this is an absolute classic. I'm really beginning to like Metheny's music - I'm a late discoverer.

  • @Homertoeclipper You should watch the life performances... They are 200% better than this cheezy video.

    ;-)

  • Einstein hair

  • 15 people missed the train:P

  • this song is so beautfiul it makes me cry everytime I hear it

  • Metheny and Mays are one of the greatest duets is jazz! Its all about the the passion!

  • I take long to find out the name of the song and by chance I found today, it brings back many memories as a kid, nostalgia is inevitable, thanks Pat Metheny Group for the memories:)

  • 14 people loses the train

  • The haircut didn't suit the music :(

  • @Fantasticifaction Neither did Beethoven's, but look where that got him. :)

  • 1:48 Sooooo much meaning in this song...

  • Pat is masters, his music has colour and is as dream. He is Genius.

  • i recall finding this CD at a radio station at which I was working in 1987 in San Luis Obispo California and hearing it for the first time...it put a vivid image in my mind of a chuffing steam engine tracking across a rocky Mountain pass. Something sad about it too...LAST train home. Could it be a metaphore for heading for heaven? I believe so! nothing is more sweet! Thank you Pat and Lyle!!!

  • Great music

  • Exelent...

  • GREAT .....8D

  • Always loved this song. A blend of American Folk and Jazz, just like Pat himself.

  • 12 people have no ears.

  • @fossaalta: cosa aggiungere a quanto hai scritto... vero... maledettamente vero...

  • Love you( all)

  • Great tune!

Anyone else think pat looks like harrison ford here?

  • Couldn't remember the name of this song for quite awhile, but my stepdad liked it due to his affinity for trains.

I just now heard it today on Sirius Watercolors while driving the 18-wheeler through Grand Junction!!

Screw Convoy, this is a truck-driving song right here!!

  • what a great, great song. and the musicians are just so damned fun to watch.

  • This was the song my husband and granddaughter played together. It was their song. We played it at his funeral to send him off on "the Last Train Home".

  • This was the song that turned me on to smooth jazz, and it still sounds so good over 20 years later.

  • genialny kawałek.

  • this song is a wonderful poem, touch my heart deeply, thanks !

  • Ha ha ha ha !!! talking about hair bands LOL , I'm sorry it's one the best songs in the planet (and my favorite also )but one of the the cheesiest video human kind history...

  • This song played on the jazz station I listened to in Chicago, as I was driving to and from work....great days....

  • This song reminds me of my ex-husband and traveling to Europe. He was (is) a big fan of Pat Metheny. Happy times.

  • ¿y su playera rayada?

  • This song reminds me of my father, I grew up with real jazz, I remember listening to this song driving back and forth from California to Arizona with my dad. Brings a lot of emotion to me I am only 20 but this is real jazz and real music that ill never forget.

  • Giampy where are u ?

  • PMG came to my university during the tour for this song. Paul Wertico hung around and talked to us all.

  • that's gotta be perm in Lyle's 'do.

  • I know there's perm in Lyle's 'do.

  • Heard this song ages ago on an old Publix commercial and fell in love with it. Wasn't til a few years ago when I figured out what it was. All over again :D

    good!!

  • Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  • Sometimes I play this tune and put it on "continous play". I'm a train fanatic and definitely Pat Metheney puts me on the train to musical heaven! It reminds me of my youth in the Bronx watching the trains roll by.

  • I don't like it when Pat looks at me that way...especially while he's wearing leather pants.

Also, if you have the chance, please feel free to take a look at my rendition of the "One Quiet Night" version of this tune.

  • LOVE this video! I've had the "Still Life - Talking" CD for years (bc of this piece, mainly). I'm retired from Amtrak, after riding trains for over 30 years. Sometimes I lived in one state and commuted to another to catch the train I worked on; then commuted home. Many times, to make the connection after a trip, I had to catch the LAST TRAIN HOME. This brings back some GREAT memories! Pat Metheny Group did a fantastic job and totally captured the feeling of riding those rails!!

  • Every once in a while I read all the posts and I really enjoy them good or bad but this one has me puzzled. Maybe I'm not listening deeply enough but, I've had this CD for years and While I can't discuss the roots or meaning of this music. I do know that I really love it. No reason other than that.

  • Love this piece. So deeply rooted in Blues. Listen, you can hear quotings from nursery rhymes. You can hear the essence of American music...you can hear faint echos of Muddy Waters. PM carries loads of respect for those who came before him.

  • great song, but this video is kind of unsettling. the way he looks at you is really weird.

  • poor Metheny has to act (watta director..) like a pornstar while doing the blowjob hix : eyes focus into the camera.. Anyway, max respect to Metheny.

  • the drummer doing the sound of the train, WOW!!

  • @efergarmx TWO drummers, one on snare/cymbal, other with a shaker. Amazing sound. Also: the piano/vibes together are pretty magical. Whole song is magical.

  • @efergarmx his name is Dan Gotlieb.

  • drummer and percusionist

  • @efergarmx i

  • @efergarmx Lamo the most suspicious eye contact male to male i ever seen ...smh lol

  • @phantomphreak241 Haha seriously. This is why jazz musicians shouldn't make music videos.

  • Haha!

An annoying videoclip for one of the best jazz groups in the world.

    @efergarmx

  • What a hair!

  • when i hear this i think of 90's amtrak commercials.

  • 1:50 ♥

  • Classic!

  • this song is used for th weather channel

  • @madden8021 I KNOW IT WAS ON 2001 I WAS 13 I WAS SEARCHING THIS SONG FOR A DECADE

  • Pat Metheny's LAST TRAIN HOME... a great piece of music, a masterpiece... bring so much nostalgia to my heart each time when I listen to it... it makes me cry too. Thumb up Pat !!

  • When I first heard this song so long ago, a small part of me awoke for the first time. The pain of it all was not knowing the title or performer. How does one locate a song with not even a single lyric? To this day, the melody is haunting, infectious, timeless. It truly captures the rhythmic, hypnotic experience of traveling by rail, and in doing so, conjures images of an unspoiled countryside.

  • this video's vibe is just like pure love.

  • Nice - thanks for posting!

  • My god, Mays hair.

  • The best composer, the best musicians, the best poets *-*

  • There was a time when PMG walked a jagged line among what was pop, what was jazz, and what was country. Somehow a way was found into a deep and wondrous no-mans land - smack dab in this strange and ever-changing spectrum of what we earthlings like to call simply, "music." That these particular elixirs, the earlier cauldrons of strange and unlikely elements, went on to unlock many doors to many peoples' hearts is no surprise. The beauty here lies in his simplicity. I know my heart is so entwined

  • if you tried to tell me 80s hairstyles don't rule, I'd like to know how it is possible that you believe that

  • PARA CIERTA PERSONITA GENIAL QUE CON SU AMISTAD, SIMPLEMENTE ME LLENA DE ALEGRÍA!!!!!!!

  • i like making out to this song.. its so beautiful. it reminds me of being with someone you love, and taking the last train home--unwillingly--because you don't want to part. i think this is what the song is about,

  • This is the first time i'm listening to it....and its just amazing !

  • i remember so much with this song!, my dad used to put this song when we were traveling with my family to our house in the beach or anywhere.. when i was just 5, or less... it makes me feel a lot of things

  • @pipojauber Your father is a wise man! Congratulations

  • @pipojauber I feel ya. When I was also 4-5 I was in love with trains and this was my favorite song which my dad played to me on his vinyl player. Perfection, still is. I think would be even more perfect if someone would cover this song with a sitar.

  • @pipojauber man, I have the same feeling with this song. When I was around 5 my dad used to put this album every time we travel to the beach or another city. This song really touch my heart, it is for me one of the best song of all times because of the family story.

Yeah I too love this song ! Although, of course, it is not even close to demonstrating PM's real qualities.

Welcome everyone to my "Guitar and God" playlist (still in embryonic form).

  • What a song!

  • Last wednesday (2010. 06.30.) we've seen the Pat Metheny Group at Budapest, Margit island. It's awesoma :)

  • Wish i could turn the clock back 30 years! Oh well. At least we have music like this which has the power to transport us back, if only for a while..

  • After thirty years away, I returned home to Spokane Washington in April 2009 searching for recovery. This song reminds me of my last flight from hell. By the way, I've been clean and sober ever since. And, now I'm in college working towards becoming a drug and alcohol counselor.

  • @Theandnow1963 - Congrats on your sobriety! Good luck in college!

  • @Theandnow1963 GOOD FOR YOU ....take something bad and turn it into something good ... that is ALLWAYS A PLUS ..10 stars to you ..cuz thats what you are a STAR.. for doing just that . OOooo i do love this song for the leads...nice and clean.

  • @Theandnow1963 God bless your work, wonderful!
