My step-father used to blare this on the weekends. I would ride my bike and could hear it damn near all the way down the street. This brings back some good memories.
Simplistic? You clearly don't know Metheny. He was won several Best Jazz Instrumental Performance Grammy Awards including one with Chick Corea and Gary Burton. Check him out in Wikipedia and listen to his music on Youtube. No way you can play 1/10th as well.
Out of respect for what this instrumental track means to you, I listened once more. I can't like it and will not listen to it again. There is something odd about a brute synth guitar and a pretty average player attempting to copy the particular sound of a noble instrument for effect. I don't want to offend anyone, but to me this is poor, simplistic stuff. Let's just say it's my loss, and leave it there, we can still be friends.
No, it's that you totally don't 'get it'. Once upon a time, I too was much like you. I thought that to be impressive, one must blast through arpeggios as fast as possible. Then, I grew up. Weird things happened, when I grew up. Suddenly, I started to appreciate drinks that weren't extremely sweet. I started to appreciate women who weren't extremely thin. A whole world of understanding opened up that one day, you too will come to know. Until then, keep thinking this is 'simplistic'.
@cuculus50 Would you not concur it has a very end of voyage, going home sound ? I think it does and any music that can convey anything these days is good enough for me. I've always remembered this song over the years but it does have a dose of melancholy as in when the credits go up at the end of a sad ending movie.
@cuculus50 It's not a synth guitar. It's a Coral Sitar Guitar made back in the 60s. And Metheny is far from a simplistic player. He's considered to be one the best Jazz guitarists on the planet. Check out his "Question & Answer" record for his Bebop playing which is something completely different from this track.
Yeah, bag the video, His producer/director should have done a retake, with him fousing on playing, with an occasional glance. The comment of the stare with the leather pants was frighteningly accurate.
All in all though, the arrangement is fantastic, this is an absolute classic. I'm really beginning to like Metheny's music - I'm a late discoverer.
I take long to find out the name of the song and by chance I found today, it brings back many memories as a kid, nostalgia is inevitable, thanks Pat Metheny Group for the memories:)
This dude is too brilliant to be looking at the camera like that - not sure who told him to do that but glad he doesn't do it anymore. Love love love Pats music - Happy birthday man.
I Really like this song!!! But Pat metheney looking to the camera is VERY FUNNY!!! hehehe It's seems that he's saying: Hey Babe!!! I Really play this guitar fucking well!!! hehehe
i recall finding this CD at a radio station at which I was working in 1987 in San Luis Obispo California and hearing it for the first time...it put a vivid image in my mind of a chuffing steam engine tracking across a rocky Mountain pass. Something sad about it too...LAST train home. Could it be a metaphore for heading for heaven? I believe so! nothing is more sweet! Thank you Pat and Lyle!!!
This was the song my husband and granddaughter played together. It was their song. We played it at his funeral to send him off on "the Last Train Home".

When I first heard this song so long ago, a small part of me awoke for the first time. The pain of it all was not knowing the title or performer. There was a time when PMG walked a jagged line among what was pop, what was jazz, and what was country. Somehow a way was found into a deep and wondrous no-mans land - smack dab in this strange and ever-changing spectrum of what we earthlings like to call simply, "music." That these particular elixirs, the earlier cauldrons of strange and unlikely elements, went on to unlock many doors to many peoples' hearts is no surprise. The beauty here lies in his simplicity. I know my heart is so entwined
This video reminds me of hot Montreal nights, warm summer wind and 100 000 people 'aligning' to Pat's amazing energy. Thank you for posting. I'm in France now but it's as if I were there. :)
"I'm doing you a favor as i'm taking all you moeny. I guess i should feel sorry, but i don't even trust me. There's bad news creeping up and you feel a sudden chill. how do you do my name is trouble! I'm coming in for the kill...
i like making out to this song.. its so beautiful. it reminds me of being with someone you love, and taking the last train home--unwillingly--because you don't want to part. i think this is what the song is about,
i remember so much with this song!, my dad used to put this song when we were traveling with my family to our house in the beach or anywhere.. when i was just 5, or less... it makes me feel a lot of things
@pipojauber I feel ya. When I was also 4-5 I was in love with trains and this was my favorite song which my dad played to me on his vinyl player. Perfection, still is. I think would be even more perfect if someone would cover this song with a sitar.
@pipojauber man, I have the same feeling with this song. When I was around 5 my dad used to put this album every time we travel to the beach or another city. This song really touch my heart, it is for me one of the best song of all times because of the family story.
After thirty years away, I returned home to Spokane Washington in April 2009 searching for recovery. This song reminds me of my last flight from hell. By the way, I've been clean and sober ever since. And, now I'm in college working towards becoming a drug and alcohol counselor.
@Theandnow1963 GOOD FOR YOU ....take something bad and turn it into something good ... that is ALLWAYS A PLUS ..10 stars to you ..cuz thats what you are a STAR.. for doing just that . OOooo i do love this song for the leads...nice and clean.
:)

My old guitar teacher taught me this song.
I love playing it and learning because of two things:
1) It's such a beautiful song.
2) I loved learning it not because it was easy, but because it was hard.
This then, is my signature song on guitar.

i like making out to this song.. its so beautiful. it reminds me of being with someone you love, and taking the last train home--unwillingly--because you don't want to part. i think this is what the song is about,

@pipojauber Your father is a wise man! Congratulations

@tomacoexperiment Even better: 2:22 - 2:31 and the like, hehe ! PM just isn't cut out to be a video star.
Yeah I too love this song ! Although, of course, it is not even close to demonstrating PM's real qualities.
Welcome everyone to my "Guitar and God" playlist (still in embryonic form).

After thirty years away, I returned home to Spokane Washington in April 2009 searching for recovery. This song reminds me of my last flight from hell. By the way, I've been clean and sober ever since. And, now I'm in college working towards becoming a drug and alcohol counselor.
