I don't think people take enough stylistic leaps when they think about playing music. Everything he is playing i've heard before, it's just where he puts things and how fast they are that blow my mind. I come from a musical background where froms and genres didn't really exist but the more I play the more I realize they are there even when I haven't heard that form before...it's called natural form.
A lot of people seem to look at this music as total random chaos, even those who like it. If you had some sort of experience playing this kind of stuff then you would know that with this kind of stuff you actually need a lot more control and percision. It's freeform, certainly, but freeform doesn't mean random it just means that your knowledge of music is not vast enough to describe what form it's in.
Sorry, but give me a groove-based drum solo/accompaniment any day of the week. Yes I can appreciate the free form quality of this but to me I think he is simply going from one rhythmic idea to the next with no conscious thought to taking the listener on a coherent sonic journey. Yeah so I might have summed up the essence of the liberty within jazz there but imo it is not where beatiful drumming is at. Not this example anyway. See Gavin Harrison for a reference to what I'm trying to say.
Freshwhatever, check out what THX done said - different strokes for different blokes. I gave my opinion as I saw it at the time. No need to defend Zach like he's your dead father. I'm sure he's not the slightest bit arsed about what I like to hear/see/feel in drumming.
And I certaintly aint no music theory buff, but if we are gunna be petty then actually his drumming in this vid can only really be accurately described as jazz/freeform.
Crack the skye. You are an idiot, can you not hear how he is keeping time with the keys in the back? its forever changing time signatures and creating so much atmostphere its ridiculous
For the most part he isn't keeping time with the keys at all. Not really surprising considering it would be impossible for him to hear much of them over his own constant smashing, but frankly its the others job to stay in time with the drummer. Either way, there's no need to call someone an idiot.
kinda seems like hes just going as fast as he can on the bass pedal and doing random shit with his hands.... i mean he is amazing but this makes no sense whatsoever musically, the band he is in is one of those "noise bands"... just hard to listen to really
I agree. But his solo album "Astrological Straits" (at least the first disc) shows otherwise. It's a very conceptual album. You should hear it, it has some interesting beats.
hard to listen to for the simple minded radio rock people who cant understand instrumental or anything other than the traditional verse chorus verse songs
I can't believe this actually real. lol Hill is so over the top, insanely fast. I literally can't believe my eyes....

There is a time and a place for both. And you know, different strokes for different brains. Or folks
But Zach Hill is like no other, and you can't deny that

Fuck your thought of beauty, i cant stand you "music theory" type. its like you can't understand the concept of being raw and rad.
this guy took modern punk to the next level.
he's not trying to be a jazz musician, hes simply whatever he wants to be.

Do you actually fancy me, is that it?

music is rapidly growing too free to be controlled by "order" or "logic", however arbitrarily such terms can be applied to sound.

miley cyrus makes no sense musically. linkin park makes no sense musically. Hella and Zach Hill make perfect sense musically.
