i was doing this lately too many people seem to get so upset at hypermiling though. One girl was behind me a t a light in the right ane, light went green i accelerated, quite slowly of course, and she was throwing her hands up in the air and swearing, then flew by me in the left lane staring me down and mouthed something. You have to not car what people think to hypermile lol
What a waste, i get 33 mpg in my E-320 CDI Mercedes doing 120mph. I don't have time to waste dickin around in the slow lane in some little econo shit box taking forever and a day just to get to one appoinment. Sure diesel costs more than 91 octane but only by 10 cents. And when you're able to maximize your time to get more done you're saving even more money. plus diesels last forever!!! my other diesel merc has 800,000 miles on it and been to the shop 1 time just to show them i wasn't lying ;)
Yes but remember, the environmental lobby has made it almost impossible for new and affordable diesels to enter the market. Diesels are far more efficient than gasoline engines, esp. at highway speeds because of better torque at the most common rpm levels.
If I had the money you can be damned sure I'd be doing 75 MPH like before with a Jetta diesel. And getting 50 MPG and being perfectly happy with it.
yea that pisses me off when im leading a group of cars (cause of radar detector) and theres one a**hole in the left lane HOLING EVERYBODY UP! sometimes its a old person but sometimes its a a**hole!!! arghhh! only in america...right?
Its funny, that he is listening to the radio. Come on, wasting electricity is not solution. And perhaps the energy was generated by your fuel-powered engine, thought of that?
I've tested this out actually with my ScanGauge. Some accessories such as the A/C, head and brake lights, and power steering increase gasoline consumption. However the radio's drain on the 12v is negligible which is why you can run a radio on a pair of AAA batteries.
Maybe hypermilers should put bumperstickers in their window saying they are CONSERVING gas and "what are YOU paying for gas? Go around if you have the money to burn."
man i luv u and your driving the music the relaxation i bet you are having a great time laughing at all the speeders going past you. i drive a 95 3.8 mustang i get 35mpg going 50 on the highway despite the min. being 55 in michigan cant wait to be pulled over by a trooper... " son do u kno how fast u were going?" ugh 50 sir? well son the mim speed is 55 please drive faster hahahaha
If you look at about 5:38 I do in fact get passed by a Cincinnati cop.
But yeah I just do 50 in the right lane, sometimes 55 if I'm in a hurry, and cruise on down the road. It sure beats weaving in and out of cars, doubling the cost of gas, and I'm going to bet my blood pressure is lower now. LOL
Sure, it beats weaving in and out of cars, but you're making everyone else weave around you. How safe is that? I like to increase my MPGs too, but I drive the speed limit. My most economical speed is between 40 and 45, but I'm certainly not doing that on the highway.
If the drivers behind you don't like how you drive they can go around. If you live in a city where you can get shot for driving like this then move. I have a Honda Accord 4-cyl 2004 and have been able to achieve 33 mpg in the city. I also have a 8-cyl Grand Cherokee and get 26 mpg.
I drive in the far right lane when possible or safe at all times.
Hypermiling includes very conservative and very defensive driving. I don't care how many people get past me, it isn't even my intention to be in their way. I'm out to save gas, and that's it. Let the wasteful blaze on by, I'll laugh all the way past the gas pump and to the bank. :)
I got 37 mpg on an eclipse 4 cyl spypder auto. Usually i get around 25 or less .Its really a challenge, i was a disbeliever and I would laugh at people who would hypermile but WOW.. its really nice!
Cool vid. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. I've been doing more mild hypermiling in my LeSabre. I don't shift to neutral or turn my car off at lights, but I drive 50MPH on the interstate, and coast as much as possible. I've gotten over 36MPG a couple of times doing this. I now thats not spectacular milage, but considering the size of the car, the engine, and the fact that it has an EPA estimate of 29MPG highway (36 is my combined average), I think I'm doing ok :) Keep savin' gas!
How the hell could you possibly get 36MPG in a LeSabre?! My first car was a '95 LeSabre, and try as I might I never got above 27. I didn't crank the A/C, I coasted when possible, and I didn't go above 65.
It's why I got the Echo, actually--because the Buick guzzled too much gas, as a broke college student paying $3/gallon.
My LeSabre is an 04. I commute to work early in the morning so I can drive 50MPH and coast down to a lower speed at my exits. I keep my tires inflated, use my cruise control to maintain my speed, and I accelerate more slowly to force the transmission to upshift sooner. The warmer weather also helps because the engine doesn't take as long to warm up. I usually only get 32 MPG in the winter because the car stays in a lower gear until the engine reaches its proper temeperature.
Oh, that was uphill too. I was lucky to get 35 doing what I was doing.
The Echo's a manual (I love this car...I wouldn't have it any other way) - I use just about every hypermiling technique in the book except for P+G. I Fas'd down the long hill on 471 although it's difficult to notice over the radio. I DWL and DWB regularly, and DFCO'd the exit ramps.
Yeah, I actually have way more fun driving now eventhough hypermiling forces me to drive much slower...some might think that is ironic but it becomes its own challenge in itself which is quite rewarding in many ways.
The most difficult part is forcing yourself to leave earlier for commutes!
What's funny is I find I don't get to work any later driving 50 than I did when I was going 60. Another thing that makes me smile is driving 50, having someone scream past me to get to an exit, and seeing them sitting at the light anyways :)
Nice song by the band America.

That's nothing--this video was made when gas was nearly $3.50 per gallon. Imagine now with it being ~2.40 in this area (as of today) :(

The funny thing is to watch how long they'll stay back there, right behind you. I always wonder why they don't pull around and pass??

Then maybe some of you need to leave earlier instead of speeding like a jackass.

I'm going to put a sticker that says "Unemployed: driving slow to save gas" on the back. Even though I do have a job it's a good excuse.
Either that or "If you don't like my driving, go around."
LameBums 3 years ago
my favorite has to be "I may be slow, but i'm ahead of you"

I was thinking..."Drive like me for better MPG"
Or one of those white oval stickers with MPG on it. (If you steal these ideas, I want a cut)

haha, I just have to laugh as I see the huge GMC suv speed past at 55 sec...<10 mpg for sure!
What kinds of hypermiling techniques do you usually use in the echo? Is it a manual?

Let 'em. When gas hits $8/gallon they'll be on the right shoulder, lights blinking and out of gas...and I'll just cruise on by. :)
LameBums 4 years ago
Ain't that the truth! ;)
I've really taken up hypermiling in a serious way..
A very drastic change from the throttle open eyes shut mentality I used to be into..
I went from 22mpg to 30.5mpg (best) and I'm shooting for 32mpg.. I'm proud to say my average mpg is 29..
Its strange how this has turned into an obsession this fast and this is about the best hobby possible thats actually saving me money.. ;)
