Well all I can tell you is that the 35 rem will take down anything we have in the Maine woods, as well as anything you find over in NH. Is the 35 the best cartridge in the world, or even the best possible one for the job? No. Id still take my 308 over it, but for a lever action the 35 remington is up to the job.
@PJYost68 in New Hampshire, the recommended bullet weight and energy is minimim 150 gr bullet, and min of 2200 ft lbs muzzle energy and prefered of 3200 ft lbs.. taking both the 30-30 and 35 Rem out of the picture.
@sidewindermack well, not really.. a 35 Remington is a 100 yard round (with a 200 gr bullet) since at 100 yards it only has 1205 ft lbs energy, where a 30-30 with a 170 gr bullet has 1358 ft lbs energy left. (150 gr bullets in the 35 Remington don't even have that much energy)
Adamrosio. If you plan on deer hunting with an AR platform gun youre an idiot. Unless you like killing and not using the animal or just like chasing down a hit target for miles you may want to invest in something a lil more hunter friendly
If you can't take out a deer with one shot, you just need to stop unting...PERIOD.
I can knock down any large game animal with my lever action Marlin 35 rem. It's design is so perfect it actually hasn't changed since it's design in the late 1800's
@bowhunter2439- Best guns for deer unless they're more than 300+ yards away. I used to own my grandfather's 35 marlin but trade it to my mother for a Colt single action .22 revolver. I loved shooting that .35 though.
This is a great gun in the north east where the longest shots are 150 to 200 yds tops , most shots are 100 yards and under , this is a great bush gun.
If you're going to do that just buy a hunting rifle. Why spend extra money to convert a gun when you can buy one with what you need it for to begin with.
@lj2justgoto Don't be thick. I was referring to its equal counterpart. A 30-06 semi is slower than a bolt action 30-06. Gas escaping from the fired round to load the next causes a loss in velocity.
The .35 Remington is more than enough juice to handle business with. If my marlin 336 .35 can't take something down, then I'm tossing a 500 Grain .45-70 slug at it. End of Story.
A 45-70 is a two hundred yard gun if you want any energy retention and accuracy left. I went with the 35 Gibbs which is above the 35 Whelen and gives the same energy as the .338 mag

The 35 Rem. is a real thumper on deer. A great cartridge and a far better choice than the .30-30 Win.

@sidewindermack Also good for black bear and moose too. Its not a coincidence its a favorite of Maine guides.

I take it you don't hunt. Bolt action have better velocity and better distance.
mrpuddlemrpuddle 2 years ago
35 rem's are bad at long distances. i got a marlin xl7 .270 bolt action.

some people do that tho because they have been around that gun most of there life

@mrpuddlemrpuddle
I take it you have no idea what you are talking about!
So, a "bolt action" 22 has "better velocity and better distance" than my 30-30?
Would the "bolt action" have "better velocity and better distance" than ma automatic 30-06?
Most people use bolt guns because you can free float the barrel for consistent accuracy.

@mrpuddlemrpuddle
Yeah, that 1% loss in velocity from an 800 yard shot sure is going to make the difference! Obviously they aren't the hunter, you are!
