good track, didn't appreciate it when i first was introduced to it, not as good as "save a prayer". saw them play this song on the pop trash tour and for the sax parts, simon played a harmonica, def didn't have the same effect

I must say that this is a Classic, and must be preserved as all great cultural film work is preserved. Why?
First, the song is excellent. Second, this is one of the first music videos, so, it's culturally significant. Third, the cinematography is beautiful. The color usages remind me of the film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" with Catherine Deneuve in her first film. Fourth, the "storyline" for the band is humorous, like The Beatles were in "A Hard Day's Night." A true classic for the ages.
Hey, Duranies. I was a 13-15 for their video hey day but it's unforgettable. These guys made getting the girl a romantic and adventurous thing. Not the zero sum game that it's made out to be by society. Anyway, my regards to you all. I like the positive feelings surrounding this re-mastered piece of art. May we all steal a few moments in own Rio with the girl in this lifetime...... See you guys @ World Cup !
i was 18 in 1981, and let me tell you, love was free, and love i did as many hot chicks i could, just like gene simmons!!!!! basically the only thing you caught was taken care of with a pill!!!!!
i loveto play this song when i go sailing, exept i dont wear an avocado green suit, not becouse i dont like it but becouse i cant find one... oh rio rio heads across the rio grand. beautifull boat by the way
I was 20yrs old in 1983 when mtv was really starting to take off, the music of that time was great, if you were in your twenties through the 80's it was a blast.
@sjhoffman63 the year i was born. grew up to synth and spandex. but got a good taste of the 90's which i think better better to grow up in. maybe not for music though.
@pix042 He wasn't a Brummie, the rest of the band were, he was the boyfriend of a girl the Taylor brothers knew in The Rum Runner in Broad Street, Broad Street and they needed a replacement for the original singer Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy who thought he would be more famous if he went solo (What a mistake, apart from his one hit Kiss Me) I think Simon was from the London Area. I am a Brummie by the way.
The 80's were so cool, i only lived thorugh them for 1 year and about 3 months but i can still realize that the pop music of that decade was far superior to todays, if i was in a dance club and wasted i might actually dance to this, the best thing you can do with todays pop music is hit the "stop" button.
@TheFahdSyed : I was a teenager in the 80's and I can tell you it was a great great time. The world had balance (ussr vs usa), music was great, hope was everywhere. we were all looking forward to the 21st century and people thought that great things would be achieved before the year 2000. girls were hot before they got all the grundge look etc in the 90s. and as for post 2000, what a let down. If I could go back in a time machine, i would be back to 1985-1986 in two seconds.
@Torkan91 i grew up in the 80s, after the punk scene. between that and the hair bands (which i like, Def Leppard for one), there was that stuff, all electronics and earily Madonna (her newer stuff is good), Flock of seagull stuff....then after rock was Grunge which was good, borderline great....now today is absolute CRAPOLA!!! some good bass lines and such but nothing with any stamina (sp). Only think i can say, Eminem is around 10 years now, hes got it going 4 himself. a white rapper LOL!
@lowzone69 Yeah well, there are few bands/artists that make music now a days that I can enjoy. For example Opeth, Deadmau5 and Pendulum. But those bands are not stuff you will hear on the radio (which is sad). It just feels like everything mainstream is bad now a days. I mean, I don't listen to a lot of pop but I still like old songs and bands even in that genre. Rap as well, people who think that all rap is like eminem and lil wayne is just ignorant. Old school rap is some good shit.
It wasn't that great mate (if you were as uncool as I was, er and still am), at least you being younger than me had much better video games and a better choice of telly channels to pick from. My first computer was a ZX Spectrum with a 16k memory!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh god I sound like me Dad now.
Just a note here: The bassline is GREAT. In fact, you have to hear the bass in all Duran Duran songs. Back then, in 1989, Rolling Stone Magazine selected John Taylor in their list of BEST BASS PLAYERS of the 80's
I MISS TOO MUCH 80´S MUSIC... AND THE ERA OF THE NEW ROMANTIC CREATED BY THESE MONSTERS CALLED DURAN DURAN.... DONT FORGET THEM! LA GRINGA FROM BS AS/ ARGENTINA
Apparently for the World Cup Duran Duran re-released this as a football anthem:
"His name is Rio & he watches from the stand while we played in South Africa your sitting on your hands, oh Rio Rio why couldnt you stay fit? and then we realised its because your actually shit"...
Duran Duran and Rio; a good music video and popular with MTV. This one made me stare, because I had never seen body paint before; and I was trying to see if the swimsuit was painted on: Something the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue started doing, body paint swimsuits, so good it is hard to tell the difference. Now with digital television, the sneaky girl is obviously in a body painted swimsuit, they also painted over the swimsuit, so she is dressed; but fun to look at.
None of them. The song's lyrics are descriptive, creative and evoke a lot of emotion (a personal favourite to play during the summer). I suppose you like plain stuff like, "Girl, I love you, ooh, ooh, ooh". How bland.
@tantric38 Well None of them are dumb. I admit I dont know what the fuck a "cherry ice cream smile is" or even half of what he is saying for that matter.....
But I know that its 1000 times better than all the music that comes out today.
I really love 80's music, the era was so vibrant, unique and fun. I really wish I could have been a teenager in the 80's. I think Duran Duran are one of the groups that epitomise the 80's for me personally and I must add wasn't Simon Le Bon hot, lolz.
@Tauryluck i can attest to the fact that it was the best time growing up as far as music goes. Duran Duran was one of my most favorite bands. really music video pioneers, they took every video to another level. This song and its video was always one of my favorites growing up and i was in love with both John and Roger Taylor!
@katycreative I know what you mean about their videos, some of them almost look like short movies. Well your very lucky to have been a teenager in that time, though I get some solstace from the fact that I was born in the 80's,lolz. : )

Here's a topic for discussion: Which of these lyrics from Rio is the dumbest?
A) "Cherry ice cream smile, I suppose it's very nice."
B) "I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV."
C) "It means so much to me like a birthday or a pretty view."
D) "Hey now, WOO, look at that!"
E) "I know what you're thinking. I'll tell you something. I know what you're thinking."
Have at it!

I think we're talking about another Roger Taylor, because I was thinking about the drummer from Queen, also Roger Taylor...

@QueenWillNeverDie Yes Another Roger Taylor played in Duran Duran also drummer! Duran Duran was cool 80s pop but I prefer Queen.
