This is how real missiles work. They don't just blow up a plane completely. Air to air combat missiles were designed so that only half of the aircraft blows up and the pilots can escape where they are either captured or can get away. Did you know that in a war, if you see a man on a parachute, you CANNOT shoot him until he is on ground?

And air to air missles are ment to blow up an aircraft, the reason why you only see half the plane blow up is cuz thats as much explosion power you could put inside an air to air missle

@rubberbandman200 I personally thought the missle had a sensor on it that would sense the proximity of the itself to the jet and eject shrapnel, and try to disable the plane. I thought the vapor trails behind the jet were leaking fuel which caught fire thus explaining the fire ball. But in my opinion once that 2nd missile slices the plane in half, that missle was done. But all that aside this is my favortie part of the movie, and the ejection scene in slow motion should've won an award!!

@SonOfGod3000 A few seconds after a SAM fires, it switches to main engines "burns for 10-25 seconds" and if radar guided, it beings searching and once something is located, they goes into terminal guidance. Depending on the SAM, they will either have proximity, contact or command fusing. So yea, u thought right about that. It is retarded how well and how long they chase in this movie, and the fact the 2nd missile somehow catches up with the first. lol

3. To answer the question "why did they turn into the missile" :

This indeed is a proper tactic when dealing with incoming missiles. Think about the missile is ballistic after burn time (short!). That means that every turn the missile have to do, will bleed speed. Maneuvering kills speed. So if you put the missile on youe 3 - 9 o clock line. You force the missile to continuously correct the course in order to be where you will be. Then turn hard into the MSL and it wll probably miss u.

1. SAM (and also AAM) do have a LOT shorter burn time, about 20 secs. Then they go ballistic, but still can turn.

2. The Aircraft drops Flares, which would (maybe) spoof a IR guided missile. If it is a IR missile, than he would absolutley get no warning indications in the cockpit. why ? because the missile is passive. How would any sensor know of the missile.

AK-47 was reliable, not best. Although first revision M-16 were also worthless and no stopping power. AK-47 where cheaper, easy to maintain and reliable. No accuracy though, the stopping 'power' came from the fact the round 'tumbled' through the air rather than flew straight.
