  • To all the Scotts who are talking trash about us Yanks and our jacked up way of wearing a Kilt...First, you are right, I am not a Scott. I am an American Mixed Breed; Irish, Scott, Welsh and Cherokee. I do not claim to be related to any famous Celtic warrior or have ties to any subjugated lands. I choose wear a Kilt because it is a symbol freedom. This appropriate because I celebrate the freedom of being a Citizen and not a Subject. The only problem I have in a kilt is where to put my gun.

  • Rubbish!!

  • I consider it a privelage to wear a kilt ,,especially after what they [Highlanders went through to keep that part of ther heritage. This guy looks like he's being tortured to be made to wear the Breachan Faille

  • Putting it on is definitely the hardest part... If you've got over 65 inches of width, you're going to have a time managing the "left-overs".

  • WTF are they doing!??? Typical Americans, they think they know everything and end up making a complete arse out of it! I'm Scottish, I deal in tartan cloth, and wear both the Breacan-feile and the Feile-beag. They've made a dug's dinner out of this! Stick tae yer F-ing cowboy boots and denim jeans, for Christ's sake! And you're American NOT Scottish as well!!

  • @moatsiebeethovenbach We'd all love for you to put up a video of the "prah-per" way to do it. I know I would at least.

  • @moatsiebeethovenbach A good percent of Americans can call some Celtic heritage, if not a total claim. My own is a mix of Saxon and Cymræg [Welsh ], mixed in the British Isles before America was discovered by the Spanish/Italians.

A good turn, my friend, would be to show us how you would do it, rather than belittle the work of others. Then we see the superior man for what he's worth. Sayin', as the Hoodoo say, ain't doin'.

  • Wow, that thing is a mess! There are much more easier ways to put it on! Again i am not from Scotland but my family heritage is Scottish and Welsh. Shouldn't you put the Sporran and everything on first ?

  • typical yanks, think they know it all !!

no doubt they think they are decendants of william wallace or robert the bruce, like the 10 million others !!

  • Getting ready for a day of going to town to pillage is a pain in the arse.

  • looks good. The videos could be edited down into 1 vid.

I originally thought a kilt was a pleated skirt... This was educational.

  • Where I come from we pronounce plaid as "pladd" not "played". Just saying.

As for the time and difficulty of putting it on... they are taking it slow here to show how it's done. I tacked the pleats in my kilt so I didn't have to fold them every time. Even though I don't wear it that often, I can wrap it in a couple of minutes. That's good enough to avoid wardrobe malfunctions and to be able to walk around in it. I usually spend another couple of minutes tidying it.

  • I've never seen this done before, but sure seems like it takes a LONG time to get the dress put on even half-way decent.

  • hehe. "you know why we call em Kilts?, because we kilt everyone who called it a Skirt!" XD

  • why is there a fukin american tellin us how to put a kilt on ? and a woman should not wair a plaid what you on about.

  • why is there a fukin american tellin us how to put a kilt on ? and a woman should not wair a plaid what you on about

  • why is there a fukin american tellin us how to put a kilt on ?

  • Only one thing wrong for me and that is the kily part is a wee bit oor lang.It should be slightly shorter than the wee kilt in it should be just above the knee.

  • who is this guy and where does he live?

  • Surely America and Canada are an auld enough nation noo tae hae there own culture, dress etc....instead of relying on anither country's for a sense of identity.

I have met so many here saying "Well my grandads, dad's, aunties wee hamster came from Scotland". I hae also heard many times "Howdy am fram Scatland"

    Where ye fae? Well.........blah blah.

I think they need a sense of identity and belonging and because there ancestors slept with a Scot that gives them the right .

  • @1314saoralba The Great Kilt originated from the Vikings.

  • @1314saoralba It's not about that. It's about respect for your heritage and ancestors, well at least it is for me. I think if a person truly has no Scottish blood in them it is wrong to wear a kilt. They should respect their own heritage, on that I agree but there is nothing wrong with showing where you came from and being proud of who you are.

  • @GEldridge1 Totally agree with you! People who do not have any Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Celtic blood or there family doesn't have a Tartan, shouldn't wear one! It is all totally about Respect!

  • @GEldridge1 I also agree with you, and other people too. If you do not have any sort of Celtic and/or Scottish blood, you should not wear a kilt, and basically, I would say the same thing as JamieMadroxsgirl. In the end, it all comes down to respecting your family, heritage and ancestors. One day, I hope to find my clan since no one in my family has told me what clan I belong to. You sound like you know what the fuck is going on man, and I respect you for that. Hail to you and hail to Scotland.

  • Maria Morrissey here, the kilt lady helping Rook get into his great kilt.

Yes, once you've gotten into your great kilt a few times and you know where your belt is going to end up, you can stitch the pleats together in a straight line of stitching just at belt level. Then, all you will have to do is straighten out the pleats before you lay down and get into your kilt, you won't have to refold them every time.

There is no ideal # of pleats, but the ideal depth is a couple inches.

  • i put 10 pleats in mine...is there an ideal number of pleats there should be or does it even matter?...i put 10 because its less cumbersome than it wud be if i had 20 or so...any tips would be nice because i do reenactments but i also want to noe the right or best way of putting my kilt on

  • There must have been a faster way for regular folk to don the great kilt than this. Just so cumbersome. It approximates the look of a great kilt but would an ordinary man have gone through this on a daily basis? I have read of someone unearthing a very old great kilt with an interior rope attached at intervals about the waist to make dressing easier. Seems a more practical solution to me.

  • to me its simpler to use 2 belts...one going under the plaid before u wrap it around u...and a second one to keep it secure after u stand up

  • Holey dooley - what a pullava!! Looks great tho!

  • Holey dooley - what a pullava!! lol 'o) but hey it looks great!!

  • I wouldn't mind helping him tuck and smooth that quilt... he belongs on the cover of a romance novel.

  • Wow! That is amazing. I thought we ladies went through a lot of work to get dressed.

  • how much for the scottie hottie in the kilt? =D

  • yay the belted plaid

  • Wow, just buy a Utilikilt and go to the show already =)

  • No way, man!

Whatever you'd call what's shown here, it's a multifunction garment.

The plaid can be pulled over your head, neck and arms to protect against wind and -to some degree- rain. It can also be used as a blanket for sleeping. Can you do that with a "utili"-kilt?

  • lol. this is far more utility than any "utili" kilt.
