Family Ties, like many shows of the time, had a number of episodes like this where a family member, friend, etc. that no one had ever mentioned or seen suddenly died (like that "great friend" of Alex's). It would have been much more effective if the character had actually been featured in previous episodes. What if Family Ties had had an episode where Skippy died? That would have been incredibly effective.
@jksonny True, and a good point but then think about how the vibe of the show would change. Family Ties was always a comedy, and meant to be more lighthearted entertainment.
@blackhorse099 I see what you mean and I think the writers/producers agreed with you, which is why they didn't take that kind of step. Still, just think how monumental an event it would have been to have someone like Skippy actually die. Viewers would have remembered it for the rest of their lives, like Henry's death on MASH.
@jksonny Oh I agree with you. Something like that would be very memorable and meaningful; I guess they just wanted to go the more cheery route and avoid stuff like that.
