To compare my comments about the speed difference between a 250cc Superkart and a 125cc print kart at Laguna, I believe the fastest 250cc time is in the 1:23 range and the fastest 125cc to this date is my friend Jason Santander in his CRS/ICC Birel kart, where he clicked off a 1:36.xx. The theoretically slower stock moto 125cc karts run in about the 1:39.xx range and with more experience there and in the draft, they can probably get down to 1:37's. Compare that to some racecars and be surprised.

The Super Karts were laping at about 1:30 which is very fast. However Helio Castroneves holds the track record for the 2.38-mile configuration at 1:07.772 set in a Champ Car in 1996. I agree the karts put on a better racing show than F-1, but they are nowhere near as fast.
the engines used are generally either motocross engines such as yz250 cr250 or rm250s for national 250s or purpose built motors for shifter karts such as an sgm which is 2 cylinders putting out around 90hp whereas the moto engines such as a honda cr250 are around the 65 mark. 6 gears, 1st is forward then the rest are back on the gear lever. gearbox is sequential.
out of curiosity, what engines to they run, please dont say 250cc motorbike engine can you please extrapalate what brand most common mods rough power estimate how many gears.

Common mods include ported heads, aftermarket carbs, exhausts, reed valves, ect. Aerodynamics (wing/diffuser) also commonly utilized.
but dont u get sick of trying to convince people that go karts are actually fast? people think we have arrested development. People used to tell me i was 22, not 8. i never found a good answer for them.
Awesome, lap 2 was done in 1 min and 35 sec and it there was plenty of traffic on the track. With a car you struggle to get the time down to 2 minutes.

Those karts can do 0-100 mph in 4 seconds, top speed of around 150 mph single cylinder and the twin cylinders touch 170.
