@ErikS1975FreeState Bear's only difficulties were Texas, ND and Coach Bob Neyland. All his frustrations in those games were hard fought, close affairs that just didn't come out right for the Tide (or me!) . At least two nat'l chamionships were lost to UA in those epic match-ups. Oh well, can't win 'em all.
Alabama also had some trouble with Nebraska in the 70s. While I do recall Bama beating Neb. 20-3 in about '78 or '79, Nebraska beat Alabama 38-6 in the '71 season Orange Bowl and beat them again about 31-24 in roughly 1977.
@politicalbeast1959 UofA also beat NE in 01/66 (& 01/67) in what should have been AL's 3rd straight NC (never done before). '60s politics got in the way and title given to 9-0-1 Notre Dame instead of 10-0-0 AL. This was game where ND deliberately (w/score 10-10) didn't go for win against Mich.St.(9-0-1)in last reg season game of 68, knowing the voters were going to give it to them over still segregated AL. They did and, to add insult to injury (and to the champ 2 yrs running), they gave MSU #2.
Thanks for the historical insight. As I was too young at that time to be following college football in 1966 and 1967 I wasn't aware of any of the politics impacting the vote for NC in the late 60s. The game has so changed in the past 40 years. It was very genuine then but has evolved into a corporate money-making racket in the 21st century. Sad!
