PLUS 3.5?? That means he averages 68.5 on a course rated at 72, right? Is that what you are saying? And, @samimalmstrom, who's this Marcel Siem who regularly shoots 65? Some fishy posts going on around here.
Oh, and the shot in the video is fat. Watch the ball/divot at impact. Plus you can hear it.
In the follow through, Alex's clubface has rotated massively through the hitting area See how the clubface is pointing at the ground or even slightly target-wards when he's 3/4 of the way into his follow through.
Check out ben hogan at this point, you can see most of the clubface.
Alex's swing relies a lot more on timing the hands than Hogan's, dont jinx him by comparing him to Hogan.
Nice starting point-but careful with the hogan claims.Hogan was not a flipper, he rotated through impact and kept the butt of the club very much closer to his left rotating hip. The student here has what hogan called the caddy swing- a full roll type of release where the hands cross over each other very early after impact. Hogan suffered from this swing for years till he learned the sweet simplicity of a Centripetal style release which he used to win all his tournaments.
Yeah, I suspect he's hit better shots than this one. Divot also reveals the slight over-the-top; the right side gets a shade high and outside. Everybody loves to talk about the "open body position at impact" these days, but if you look at slow-mo of Hogan during his best years, he's got his shoulders closed to the initial line of flight until right at impact. This is a near-universal among the greatest strikers--the shoulders do not dominate the downswing or get high and over.
Looking at a face-on view of his swing confirms what I was thinking on this DTL view--he leans slightly toward the target on the downswing, which usually causes a slight OTT move because of the need to square the blade in time (that, or a nasty flip). It's not a lot--the kid has a decent swing--but I'd like to see him staying a shade more behind it for just an instant longer, and letting that right side be carried or pulled through rather than become a little too high and dominant.
The short game is more important. Nobody ever wins without a great short game..Pitching, chipping, sand, putting.Give that most of your time and you'll be tuff
All the talk about handicap is a bit over done these days. Alex is a great player! I have seen them all. However, no one ever conquered the world until they were at least.... 21? Long way to go. Keep those cards and letters coming.
Next month I will post slow-motion video of him hitting a driver. You will never believe what you are seeing. Look forward to your comments. All the best. BL
Thanks for the comments. I know Marcel Siem and I can tell you Alex is in a different league. I, his coached, coined the phrase. This kid has all the tools. He is also an A student in school. I start at day one with the mental game. To me it is more important than anything, provided a person has talent. I coach some of the best amateurs in the world and I have never seen anything like this kid, anywhere! His swing is constantly improving and we never stop working on the mental side.
Great consistent looking swing, well centred. But takes it more than a solid swing to become a next Ben Hogan. Remember it has to be as efficient on tour aswell, if Im not mistaken Marcel Siem is a +7 handicap, but his career is nowhere compared to his swing and handicap ability. Work on your mental game too kid and with that swing you will be shooting low for sure on tour.
Thanks, the amazing thing is, he just keeps getting better. I have made good progress on his setup, which has lead to loading up his right side better. This allows him to push the butt of the club longer through the ball. Consequently, his lead hand/arm rotates better causing even better ball flight. When it gets above 0 here..., I will also post some Drivers, that is where it gets really incredible. Thanks again
This kid's swing is incredible. Rarely does a young man have a swing which isn't geared almost entirely around a bendy body or radical ability to will the ball to the hole. The way he stays centered and patient is profound... I am looking forward to his progress. Hope to see a great deal more, in competition would be best.
He has a nice smooth swing. It looks slightly idosyncratic, however many of the great ball strikers, trevino, furyk could be classed in this category.
Son, you need some glasses. That one is still going. Believe me, I was standing there watching him rip on after another, and that was at 2 degrees Celcius. Nice try!!
Stuvy, that is funny, everybody says that. You should have seen the faces of the kids and parents at the Doral Publix Jr. Championships in 2007 when he teed it up in the 12-13 Division. He blew them away. His shaft movement is very similar to Hogan's. He can swing it almost identically to Hogan.I purposely lengthen his backswing to improve his rhythm.Snead said he could not watch Hogan swing because his rhythm was to quick. The later you hit it,the better the timing of the hit has to be...
I don't want to take anything away from this guy, but he's not 14.......... more like 22. It's a very good swing, although nothing like hogan's. He's probably a good player though.
Stuvy, take a look at him under the video World Champion at 10. That was him 4 years ago. That was 1 year after he started playing.I have been working with him since he was 9.Watch SEVAM1's fireside chat.He talks about trusting Hogan's swing. The late hit is a hard thing to deal with.Behind every late hit is a jackhammer release.Requires unbelievealbe strength, hand-and-eye coordination, and a lot of confidence. Nice problem to have....
Just checked him out and as of 11/11/11 he's 1848 in the world Amateur rankings so not quite the next Ben Hogan yet is he

That's the truth. The minitours and pro shops are full of guys with perfect swings who can't turn three shots into two, as Jones said.
