There was a little old blues guitar player and singer named Michael Mann who played all around the village back in those days of coffee houses and basket sets - he played a version of this song that was simply exquisite as he'd howl softly and play some of the most beautiful guitar licks I ever heard. This version is okay but it just does not compare to what Michael Mann played.
@Anntelope I'd have to say this is quite impressive for young Gord, who was only 23 years old at the time.
Thanks for sharing the story. It would be nice to hear that. Too bad modern technology wasn't available back then. I'm sure there would be a video of it!
@guitarman2214 I used to play in the coffee houses myself back in those days and what a great time it was
for budding musicians and singers. Those were what we called "walk in walk out crowds" and if they liked
you - they sat for your set and plunked some coins in the basket afterwards that you passed around and if they didn't like you? They just got up and walked out LOLOL. I remember Jackie Hall, Zaharia, Michael Mann, Richie Havens, Freddie Neil, Shawn Phillips, John Sebastian, so many.
I always liked the Serendipity Singers' version of this song the best until I heard this version. Amazing harmonies and a haunting melody. Brings me back to my youth when I heard freight trains in the distance at night and wondered what it must be like to be riding on them. Those were the days. Thank you very much for posting this song. It brought back a lot of good memories.
Wow guitarman, thanks for posting all this old Gordon Lightfoot music. I knew he had done this but have never heard it before. I was just a baby/toddler in his heydey, but remember hearing him on the radio when I was little and liking it, and rediscovered him when I grew up. It's great to get to hear all this!
He had one single before he was with the Two Tones, released as Gord Lightfoot.. "Daisy Doo / Remember Me I'm The One" which was a minor hit in Canada and Australia
He began performing at St. Paul's United Church (Orillia, Ontario) and, at school as a youngster, cutting his first record at the age of ten with his sister Beverly.
Were the songs "Remember Me, I'm The One", and "It's Too Late, He Wins" from this album? I've never heard this song before. This was before he was on his own. :)
They were released with Chateau Records the same year this album was released(1962). This was recorded in January of that year, probably just before those 2 were recorded, and before he went solo.
There is a song or 2 that Gord wrote...One is called 'This is My Song'. It is a mellow love ballad with nice harmonies. I'd be glad to upload it if you are interested in hearing it. Just let me know
Another fine upload. Terry Gilkyson of the Easy Riders wrote this, though Dave Guard did the definitive version on the first Kingston Trio album, released fifty years ago in June 1958. Lightfoot and Whelan are using the KT arrangement/harmony here.
whats this album worth these days?

Not that it's a contest mind you but anyway...

I'd like to have a copy of the album itself. Do you know where I can get it?

@txdaiseyblue I would check ebay. They pop up from time to time. Or you can also find a (burned)CD copy as well.

Good arrangement and vocals. I've seen Gilkerson and Guard both do this way back when.
Good job.
