I response to kermster4: the only firm evidence to prove there was going to be an attack was when that digger and van came trundling down the road in Loughgall, and it's highly unlikely they would have surrendered, if challenged. And how can it be murder when the East Tyrone unit fired first and blew up the station with RUC officers inside? The tables were turned on them. I don't celebrate their deaths, I think it was a tragic waste of their lives. If you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

It was a 'war' wasn't it? Is that not what the the IRA had claimed as their legitimate right. In war you gain intelligence on your enemies and use it against them. The IRA didnt go in there with feather dusters they had a choice as to whether to try to kill. There was a chance by one army to wipe out one of the others best units and ir was taken. look at it objectively
