Well, it depends on what permits were necessary at that point to be able to have a party like that in that area of Utah. IIRC, it was on private property, and they cleared it with the owner, and the local govt.
The complaint on the organizers' side was that everything was legally cleared, but the party was still busted.

The cops were doing the right thing--they had no reason to believe that they were telling the truth. When some guy at one of these concerts is carrying all these drugs it MIGHT be because he confiscated them but the cops can't take the risk to assume that's what happened. Such a shame that people who were trying to help never got the chance. They were apparently arrested just for trying to help the cops pick the stuff up. That kind of sounds like it crossed a line.
The rave wasn't busted because of the drugs; it was busted because the promoter supposedly didn't obtain all of their permits. IIRC (based on accounts of others), everyone involved with obtaining the permits (including the permit office) says that the party was legit. This is the whole point. Not the drugs at the party, but that the legality of the party's existence was questioned when it supposedly didn't need to be. Not to mention the unnecessary amount of force used to shut the party down.
One more thing. Nobody seems to have a problem looking at the camera when they say they've worked a lot of events, etc. I don't see one person who isn't looking somewhere else, closing their eyes, etc, when denying any wrongdoing. LOL
Here's another problem. If I were a prosecutor, I'd love to have this video. In the process of trying to make themselves look innocent, these guys admitted that they took possession of what they thought were illegal substances and I bet there's not one phone record of them calling the cops about it. The cops were doing the right thing--they had no reason to believe that they were telling the truth. When some guy at one of these concerts is carrying all these drugs it MIGHT be because he confiscated them but the cops can't take the risk to assume that's what happened. It's the judiciary system's job to decide that they didn't commit a crime. I bet all they needed to do was go and talk to the prosecutor and they got let off the hook.

Military? Chill out? Seriously? A "permit" means nothing to the police unless it was issued by the DEA, which I can guarantee you it was not. It is standard procedure to arrest people that are carrying drugs. If the cops did anything else they would be complete idiots and probably seriously reprimanded by their superiors. Look, none of these guys got in any kind of trouble. They were all let free. It's just the cops' job to make sure they round up everyone that has any drugs on them to be safe.

It sounds really weird that security would confiscate the drugs and then hang on to them, but it's totally true. Raves are about having a good time and not even securtiy wants to ruin the good time. And really it only takes a few security officers to control a crowd of 3000.

What you guys gotta do is take the "underground" out of the rave. You can't spread electronic music with everything underground. Do you think Germany's scene would be the way that it is if they had everything underground? Work with the cops. Not against them. Example...If you hire off duty cops, to be part of security, there is a good change that the party won't be shut down if someone is caught with dope. They'll just arrest the offending person...

i used to dj raves in louisiana and texas, and i have seen a few party busts. in new orleans they tried to put into effect a "crack house" law that would make the promoter pretty much guilty of running a crack house. its pretty fucked up, but what can ya do, i didnt know raves still existed, those were the good old days...

The rave wasn't busted because of the drugs; it was busted because the promoter supposedly didn't obtain all of their permits. IIRC (based on accounts of others), everyone involved with obtaining the permits (including the permit office) says that the party was legit. This is the whole point. Not the drugs at the party, but that the legality of the party's existence was questioned when it supposedly didn't need to be. Not to mention the unnecessary amount of force used to shut the party down.

Here's the problem. You have "security" people performing the law enforcement act of "confiscating." I've known of security people who will call the cops if they see something illegal, but the ones I've known won't engage in the actual enforcing of the law. Yeah, once they take possession of an illegal substance, I'd say they're on their own. I don't think anything legally ordaines these folks as drug "confiscators." LOL.

I have experienced some unusual police experiences, myself in utah... not usually in salt lake, where I have friends in the department... but in bountiful I've had a bad experience and I hear woods cross is pretty brutal... and one cop in north salt lake.. if there is anything that can be done to change this seemingly inhumane behavior... I'd like to be let in on it...
