  • I had the pleasure of flying a VP-1 out of Taylor, MO (K04) in the 90's. I logged a few hundred hours and never enjoyed flying anything more. Built by Keith Winship, he once flew it from Dallas to Oshkosh in a single day with an extra fuel tank literally in his lap. After nearly 25 years and over 1600 hours of flawless performance Keith decided to retire her. We have plans to put her on static display at Baldwin Field in Quincy, IL soon. A lot of great memories of a great airplane. Thanks.

  • What a great video, I'm glad you shared it! While I'm not building a VP, videos like this are what sends us all back to the workshop! Thanks! Great choice of music too!

  • I bought Robert Lowe's 'How To Build And Fly Your Own Plane' for 75pfrom a charity shop, which of course is all about his building of a VP-1, and although I'm no pilot, it's a wonderful read and much loved book- this video was wonderful to see!

  • i got the same book! from a charity shop too! i really enjoyed reading it .

  • hey i was wondering...does the engine need to be modified for the volksplane? is a 1200c one good for the job? does it need a turbocharger?

    tnks, chris

  • @archerrobinhood Ours was a 1200cc engine that performed superbly. The only significant modification was converting to a magneto ignition system. The wooden prop was custom-made and that is a very important part of the equation that is provided in Evans' plans. The engine turns counter-clockwise, which produces a little rightt yaw on take-off, but you get used to it quickly.

  • @drewas55 thanks so much!

  • I owned a vp-1 N4344 for a year,,,put 115 hours on it in that year,,,and enjoyed the heck out of it. I flew it all over Oklahoma and Arkansas. It lives in a hangar in Eufala, Okla gathering dust,,,thinking about buying it back. Very simple to fly,,,,not demanding. BTW,,,great video,,,I was born in 72,,,,so tell me,,ya'll still flying it?

  • I've never flown the airplane since I was too young to fly when my father sold it. N331KA is no longer flying from what I could find. Someone called my dad about 10 years ago asking questions about the airplane. The guy found it sitting in a barn but it was really too late for the airplane. All the wood was starting to de-laminate. Might as well built a new one instead of fixing it since all the wood would need to be replaced.

  • Also, the engine was not the original volks-engine. It's sad about its condition.

My dad is not sorry about selling the airplane and doesn't miss her. He had lots of fun building and flew many, many hours in her. It was time to move on. We both now fly Kolb Firestars and I must say, they are sweet flying airplanes.

  • Very nice video. I really liked the choice of music. Your father look like a really great person. Thanks

  • I am almost finishing my vp2,then it is very interesthing to me...

  • This was

the best 9.39 minutes i spent in front of the computer in years. It

really got me fired up and i have spent all day in the hanger working on my Evans VP-2 volksplane. I got

more done today than I think i have in months.

    Keep this stuff coming.

    Regards

  • Glad you liked the video and that it was able to inspire a little bit. I'll pass the nice comment along to my father.

  • I have always wanted to build one of these.

  • Ah, it IS King. I recognize it! In fact, there's a shot of the Stinson 108 that I have on Panoramio too.

  • Is this at King?
