If somebody did Elite for the Xbox and PS3 etc., they would be millionaires and I would be on of the first people to buy it!! Brings back so many good memories of my BBC Computer Days growing up, actually, I hardly went out as a teenager because I was always playing it, ELITE status lol
When i consider the scale of game developments and budgets these days, I wonder if its possible for a small outfit, ie. just me, to develop a commercially viable game. Still, it is so much more interesting that writing boring database driven software for the finance industry.
Awesome trip down nostalgia lane; I remember spending months absorbed on the game and taking some pride in smuggling narcotics through feudal areas. I think my favourite ship was the Asp. As a computer science grad ditched on the slagheap on the long-term unemployed I have started writing my own game and I notice that with DirectX so much of the hard work is already done for us. Not like the old days writing 68000.
Still the best ever computer game. For sure there are games that have way better graphics etc, but the game had everything. You could trade, you could be bad, you could be a bounty hunter, you could trade illegal products, you could shot vipers (police) or you could be squeaky clean. All of which altered the way the game played. None of which was a 'right' way to play it - there was no right way - brilliant. Tanks David & Ian for being part of my childhood. PS I was Elite - eventually!
Played it MONTHS and MONTHS (a little bit everyday, sometimes more than a little bit)... Until reaching Elite status. For many times over I wished I could "loose" myself on that universe and escape this one.
ELITE was, truly, the cream of the cream, so far ahead of the competition at the time that there was simply nothing to compare it with, It would be like comparing warp drive with chemical rocket engines...
To be honest, the first version of the space trader that I played was EV Override. I then played EV Nova, and then moved onto Vendetta Online, and then I found Oolite and Evochron Legends. Finally, I now have a copy of Frontier: Elite 2.
Too bad I missed this whole anniversary thing. I just didn't heard about it.
I first played the first one in 1987 (MSX version), and although I never was much good at it, I loved it's open environment and the game universe. Seeing that Elite bird-logo still brings chills down my spine. It brings so much memories(!)
Frontier was a different thing. Because I have always loved stars and space, it was more than just a game for me. It was a virtual universe with all the solar systems and stars...
How does a game single-handedly create an entirely new genre, and simultaneously conquer every bidder that comes along for 25 years after it's release? They tweaked every detail just right, and set that ship's coordinates for a light year journey and landed triumphantly on the head of a pin. Inspired, to say the least.
The funny thing is, the docking computer worked even if you turned it on just after hyperspacing into a system. When I was 8 years old so, I used to jump to Riedquat with a load of food for their civil war, and just put the spaceship on docking computer. Listening to Blue Danube. The reason I had money to buy the docking computer was that my older brother had a cheat savegame with 5000 credits at the start. You get only 100 credits and in star systems without a good tech level, you can't buy it.
'Your feeling nervous, your about to drop out of hyperspace and unsure of what awaits you!'
'You check your stock of missiles, there all present and correct and all energy banks are fully charged.'
'Your just about ready for anything, well, except a thargoid, but they only exist in witch space, right?'
I made deadly on the ZX Spectrum before the game run out of steam for me, I think I may have actually got stopped by a bug on one of the later missions?
Wow what a great game ELITE was....My brother and i used to stay up nearly all night playing,he even modded a microsoft joystick so it had the fire button on a wire so we could both get in on the action.PLEASE RELEASE ON XBOX LIVE ARCADE.
@Dean070759 It would be a crime not to take advantage of the Elite/Frontier model of game with modern graphics and sound, online connectivity - (i.e an MMO?) Single player? Live communication VS text dialogue options? Regular missions/random content uploaded to subscribers - this need not be too hard to do nowadays (quality voice-acting being a plus) - look at WoW/Xbox Live. PC and console connectivity (if desired)? It could/would be amazing..
Most of the games in the 80's were crap however Elite is engadging, fun and addictive. The game is years ahead of it's time and still playable today. Whenever my internet connection is down I spend my time playing elite or frontier.
@leerees What format do you use to play it?....I know very little about emulators and such...but I'm desperate to get a version i can use easily....ANY help would be helpful...I've downloaded a few versions but I can never get them to work....
It would be great if next part of Elite come out. With super graphics, lots of galaxies, hundreds of space ships models and adventure plot. I would buy this game, no matter how much it would cost.
@0999001 Indeed, I would consider donating a spare organ - a kidney or even a lung if needed.. I would gladly deposit my appendix/tonsils on the altar of Elite (I don't know how bloodthirsty a God Mr Braben is however! O_O)!
I remember playing Elite on my Commodore 64 and to this day, decades and thousands of games later, this one is still #1 with me. I even still have the instruction book, poster, and story book that came with it. I could never force myself to throw it away! I'm hoping one day to play the original remade fully utilizing todays technologies. Maybe expanding to buying your own worlds and furnishing them. The possibilites are endless....
I never played the original, I just went straight into Frontier. One thing I always wanted was more factions (possibly aliens), with wars taking place and territory changing hands. Showing up at a system with a space battle going on would have been amazing.
I'd also heard that the previous one had multiple universes instead of just one, and I always thought it would be nice to have a change and start in a new galaxy.
At this point I'd just be happy with a Windows XP compatible rerelease.
And in fact, the industry is in its beginning. The fact that Elite is still unique shows that no other game could distill its greatness. No wonder Elite is still relevant.
Hope you guys pull out something very special and hope I can acquire it in Brazil. Sorry for the broken english =-)

7:07 to 8:04 is probably the most beautiful description of a missile hitting its target in FFE imaginable. I almost cried. lol

I loved the part were we talks about the external view to watch his missle destroy its target. Oh the memories. Technology may move on,
But the child inside us never dies.

I don't deny Elite was important but I missed it, never knew about it's existence in the eighties.
And then I owned an Amiga and bought Frontier, one of the most important games in my life ever. I was incredibly addicted to this.
Newtonian flight and realistic solar/planetary systems are the reason Frontier Elite 2 still is far better than most new space games, or Elite.
