I remember something like this happening when I came back from Turkey in 2004. We had to have the plane divert to Manchester cause the winds were so strong.
With the runway perpendicular to the prevailing wind, the wind shear encountered when approaching from over Otley Chevin and the fog (which often closes the airport when it isn't windy), it's a wonder that it is such a succesful international airport which is looking to expand!
