c) don't lie down when your opponent gets a hold of both of your legs (which is not supposed to happen in the first place). sit up and use your arms, perhaps break his grip and get to your knees.
d) both of you could learn some open guard passes. I recommend Roy Dean's purple belt requirements for that.

Well, it wasn't bad. However, I recommend both of you to crosstrain bjj. You could both have done better.
More specifically:
a) don't go for chokes without securing a dominant position.
b) if your opponent is turning his back to you - take it
