@feltetteluvtomfelton I think it's more likely a condition. I've seen a few particularly big shires malformed. Makes them look smaller than they are when they're like this, really sad. If you look closely there are no ribs showing, her ribcage must have been tiny. Her pelvis is also very narrow, if she was just malnourished there would be a load more bone showing back there. She is weak in build and seems to be atrophied in the quarters. Pretty obvious she wouldn't last long.

This horse looks like a young rapidly growing horse should, you definitely don't want a young horse of this size to be overweight, as that would just cause more problems with its development!
I do not think this horse is under any animal cruelty; however, i would like to see a little bit more weight on this mare. Sadly, the mare has passed years ago. For her age, she was very well behaved and sweet-loving personality. Just by her behavior, i can tell she was well taken care of and loved.
@horselesssleigh 20 hands is not standard for equine world standard is like 15.4 hands or somewhere around there, because my horse is 16hh and that's considered tall so I don't know where you live but on Earth 20hh is NOT stanard.
Plus you can't see her ribs and none of the major bone points (like withers, shoulders, hips) are pointy and protruding. And if she were malnourished, those points would be defined and you could definitely see the ribs.

Obviously there is no cruelity involved with this horse. If you want to see what a malnourished horse looks like, look up horses for slaughter/abused pictures and compare. Its not an excuse it the truth she wasn't underweight i have a 3 year old mare and she looks about the same she gets 13 pounds of hay everyday and about 2 cups of grain and my horse looks the same. Horses finish growing before they start filling out their body with muscle and fat.

That isn't the biggest horse in the world. I have just watched two quick videos of large horses before this one and both were a LOT bigger than this STANDARD sized horse. The title is most certainly mis-leading on this video.

@TheChelsbean23 yes, it's unfortunate but many americans do not know how to properly feed drafts or how they are supposed to look. the line "easy keeping" for their size, is a myth. they require 2x as much good quality nutrition, more akin to a cow's diet.

Hips are deformed - surgery to correct it went badly and killed the poor animal. My guess would be a hormone imbalance (pituitary tumor, maybe) that led to abnormal growth front and rear, and maybe heart and digestive problems as well. The sore on her side could mean she spent a lot of time laying down, which she would do if her hips couldn't handle her weight.
This horse may be like people who are over 7 feet tall: if it's a pituitary tumor, they too have medical problems and bone deformities.
I am a equine vet and this horse in in terrible condition. Poor thing is sweating and can barley stand on her back hoofs, also her hips look out of place. I'm guessing this horse died of colic.

this mare does look as though she had several deformities....sickle hocked, thin, the front legs at the elbow look strange, and she has an extremely narrow chest. She certainly wouldn't have won any conformation classes.

@TheChelsbean23 yes, it's unfortunate but many americans do not know how to properly feed drafts or how they are supposed to look. the line "easy keeping" for their size, is a myth. they require 2x as much good quality nutrition, more akin to a cow's diet.

Hips are deformed - surgery to correct it went badly and killed the poor animal. My guess would be a hormone imbalance (pituitary tumor, maybe) that led to abnormal growth front and rear, and maybe heart and digestive problems as well. The sore on her side could mean she spent a lot of time laying down, which she would do if her hips couldn't handle her weight.
This horse may be like people who are over 7 feet tall: if it's a pituitary tumor, they too have medical problems and bone deformities.

I am a equine vet and this horse in in terrible condition. Poor thing is sweating and can barley stand on her back hoofs, also her hips look out of place. I'm guessing this horse died of colic.

as a pro trainer ,i see this horse in colic ,its protecting its belly, thats why its legs are back like that, if it was bad hips, it would be one hip not both,horses very rarly hurt both hips, as on fitness respect, i see a horse with hugh shoulders and musles, back end could be bigger how ever not bad,its colic i see,please dont reply to me if your not a pro, please ,little girls go have mom and daddy by u new horse, i cant stand people that talk out there ass.

I've saw a horse standing at 19.1hh, his name is Bingo and he is huge but soo gentle and quiet, i has to tack him up for a riding lesson and honestly i had to throw the saddle and hope it would reach his back lol =)

this mare does look as though she had several deformities....sickle hocked, thin, the front legs at the elbow look strange, and she has an extremely narrow chest. She certainly wouldn't have won any conformation classes.

@dhoamyilnio It does not go up to 19.5 it would be 19.3hh then to 20hh. If the horse is 19 hands, 4 inches tall. Since a hand is equal to four inches, this horse is actually 20 hands tall. Some people incorrectly use the number after the period to stand for fractions of a hand, but it should stand for inches. So, some people write "19.5" to mean 15 and a half hands, but this should correctly be written as "19.2".
