Walking in the bush on foot is a great way to promote conservation. If you do enough - as this very experienced trail guide (one of S Africa's top guide trainers) has - you will have encounters. This would not have been a deliberately provoked event. Elephant and other animals can happen upon you very quickly, and then you may have to stand your ground, as here. If fact, though, this approach could have morphed into a full charge. In the event, happily, just a challenging and memorable sequence.
Any reason he dosent have a front sight on his weapon? Maybe there is one but I cant see it. I have freeze framed and tried everything on this vid and the part 2 video to find one. It seems odd to carry a rifle that you cant aim.
ive also had my fair share of encounters exploring the bush as im south african i get to do trips like this fairly often and have confronted hippo, girrafe and elephant, unfortunately iv not had the privilage of seeing wild lions, lepard or cheetah
The ranger in my video who's been called a coward and an idiot is an expert in elephant behavior and is greatly involved in protecting elephants. The rifle is only for use as a very last resort; it's necessary because we are on foot in the African bush. In 15 years of guiding, he's been charged by elephants, lions, you name it... and he has never fired a single shot. He would hate to shoot one of these magnificent animals, and thus he always tries to avoid truly dangerous situations.
The ranger with the rifle is a idiot. It looks like he was showing off in front of them stupid tourist. They were (in the elephents mind) threatening the babies in the group! Don't tell me that punk was going to shoot that elephant if she would have charged!? What a cunt! (no offense to females).
Those of you who are commenting on the rangers refusal to shoot the elephant clearly do not understand elephants. It is quite clear form this video that the elephant was in a mock charge posing no threat at that time to the spectators. The PH did exactly what he was supposed to do.
So beautiful how the elephants protect their babies. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for posting.

@jedirifleman It did have a front sight. We were trained to use the rifle and I remember it having one. It was quite the weapon!

Your ranger was smart to get you out of there. I would have wanted to get out as soon as they went into a defensive posture. Looks fun though.

They did start to come back, and we didn't want to discomfort them any further, so our guide got us up and moved us out of the area pretty quickly.

I'm sure they'd get a lot of referrals if the ranger had let all his clients get trampled to death by elephants.

The ranger with the high powered rifle is a cowardly JACKASS.

Great moment with these incredible animals. I had about the same close encounter in Krugerpark myself. Thanks for sharing.
