The Wings did not "give away" Samuelsson. They didn't have a ton of cap space, and they were reserving it to sign Hudler (an RFA). In the event, Hudler delayed and then bolted for Russia. Prick.
Anyway, Samuelsson also wanted a larger role---he was a third-liner with Detroit---and the Wings weren't going to be able to give him that.
i just cant believe how the players the wings got rid of in 2010 suddenly became stars for their team, it's unbelievable. Samuelsson goes to the canucks and becomes one of their top scorers, Leino went to the flyers and absolutely ignited in the playoffs for them. it just makes me want to ask either two questions. #1: Why the hell did the wings trade them? or #2 Why now did they decide to step their game up? it makes the wings look like idiots for even trading getting rid of them.
#1: Leino was traded because he wasn't showing any sign of development, he wasn't showing himself on the wings. the wings traded him to philly and he just got on a hot streak in the playoffs. and samuelsson, he wasn't traded, the wings just couldn't afford him after the 08-09 season. he went elsewhere from free agency. #2: leino got on a hot streak as i said before, and samuelsson just had a good season, its that simple.

The entire league is a lot stronger then it was last year and it's gonna be hard for the Wings to climb back into a comfortable spot but I think they can do it. With half of their roster gone with injuries and many of those being to top players I'm just happy their not in a worse spot. But I honestly think their a better team this year then they were last year. Last year they were in the bottom 10 in defense this year they're in the top 10. If they can continue scoring goals they will be fine. Now if they don't start winning once they get their players back then that's unacceptable.
Maybe but I think they'll be alright. This team isn't that different from the team that won the cup in 08 their D has improved considerably from last year and the beginnning of this year. They're 10th now compared to 27 last year and Pav, Hank and Nick are improving considerably. I think thay have proved against certain teams this year that if they work hard it's gonna be hard to stop them. They head into the break on a positive note. Let's hope they make a nice little run at it after the break
ya they need to put together consecutive wins, enough of this 1 win 2 losses crap. they are not even playing 500 hockey and they need to play around 650 hockey to make the playoffs. that being said, if they do make the playoffs they will not have an easy time against the sharks or blackhawks but if detroit puts it together then they could do some damage and even replay that year where edmonton kicked out wings and when to the finals, detroit has the ability to be that team.
If any team that's this far out can put together a performance good enough to make the playoffs and still be a hard team to beat in the playoffs its the Wings. That being said Kenny Holland thinks they'll need at least 95 points to qualify and thats atleast 13 wins in the next 21 games. All i know is whether or not they make the playoffs this year i still think they'll regain the form they had the past few years. This team has too much talent and leadership to completely fall off their horse.

i'm a canucks fan, and i honestly gotta say the wings are consistent competitors for the cup, and they will be for a long time. if i didn't live in vancouver, i would be a detroit fan for sure. :) at least we got samuelsson now! :D

The Wings did not "give away" Samuelsson. They didn't have a ton of cap space, and they were reserving it to sign Hudler (an RFA). In the event, Hudler delayed and then bolted for Russia. Prick.
Anyway, Samuelsson also wanted a larger role---he was a third-liner with Detroit---and the Wings weren't going to be able to give him that.

i just cant believe how the players the wings got rid of in 2010 suddenly became stars for their team, it's unbelievable. Samuelsson goes to the canucks and becomes one of their top scorers, Leino went to the flyers and absolutely ignited in the playoffs for them. it just makes me want to ask either two questions. #1: Why the hell did the wings trade them? or #2 Why now did they decide to step their game up? it makes the wings look like idiots for even trading getting rid of them.

#1: Leino was traded because he wasn't showing any sign of development, he wasn't showing himself on the wings. the wings traded him to philly and he just got on a hot streak in the playoffs. and samuelsson, he wasn't traded, the wings just couldn't afford him after the 08-09 season. he went elsewhere from free agency. #2: leino got on a hot streak as i said before, and samuelsson just had a good season, its that simple.

@nintendoman34 no, i completely agree with you. who knows how well these men will do in the future compared to the seasons they had. it's just shocking how well they did after leaving. but you're right. we got rid of them since they either weren't performing or salary cuts. i guess a fresh start with a new team can do things for you.

@Gphazor it just goes to show you how great the wings are. Kyle Quincey couldn't make the team, now a started on the avs. Sammy can't pass and dissappears for weeks on end, not for the wings, but good enough for the nucks. Leino doesn't back check but he is good enough for philly.
Detroit keeps the best defensive forwards and the best offensive defencemen. It works. Watch how well Lebda does on Toronto. they might rename a street after him.

@letmepointout Don't kid yourself. Leino might've been a valid giveaway considering he did absolutely nothing for us and was unable to utilize his talent, but losing Samuelsson was a blow. He's a 20-30 goal scorer and last year we felt the sting of losing him, along with Hossa and Hudler.

@cursedlemon Certainly, Sammuelson could win a game here and there, but he wasn't worth the money considering the cap space they were up against. They had to select either Hossa, Franzen, or Sammuelson. I think they made the right choice, I just hope Orpick didn't put him (Franzen) out for half the season with his dirty-assed knee tonight. friggen pre-season game, what an asshole.
without the cap, sure, Sammuelson would have been a great guy to have.

@letmepointout If I recall correctly the three players on the chopping block were Hudler, Hossa, and Sameulsson. How we lost all three, I'll never know. And yes, Orpick can go suck a large one. As a matter of fact, so can the entire Penguins squad. But anyway, yes, the cap was significant, but I feel like we could've afforded to ditch some of our lower prospects in favor of him. We could've dealt Leino, Meech, Ritola, etc. out...what we need is more defensive prospects anyhow.

The Wings were expecting Hudler to return, so they didn't want to spend the amount of money that Samuelsson wanted and end up being over the cap due to Hudler's contract.
Overall, if Hudler had told the Wings he was going to the KHL before free agency, then Samuelsson would probably still be in Detroit.

Dude I'm just poingting it out. Pittsburgh is a good team. I'm just pointing out that if you lose that many games in the west a lot more teams are gonna pass you. The entire league is a lot stronger then it was last year and it's gonna be hard for the Wings to climb back into a comfortable spot but I think they can do it. Pittsburgh as much as I dislike them are a good team and won't continue their losing ways for long.

With half of their roster gone with injuries and many of those being to top players I'm just happy their not in a worse spot. But I honestly think their a better team this year then they were last year. Last year they were in the bottom 10 in defense this year they're in the top 10. If they can continue scoring goals they will be fine. Now if they don't start winning once they get their players back then that's unacceptable.

Maybe but I think they'll be alright. This team isn't that different from the team that won the cup in 08 their D has improved considerably from last year and the beginnning of this year. They're 10th now compared to 27 last year and Pav, Hank and Nick are improving considerably. I think thay have proved against certain teams this year that if they work hard it's gonna be hard to stop them. They head into the break on a positive note. Let's hope they make a nice little run at it after the break

ya they need to put together consecutive wins, enough of this 1 win 2 losses crap. they are not even playing 500 hockey and they need to play around 650 hockey to make the playoffs. that being said, if they do make the playoffs they will not have an easy time against the sharks or blackhawks but if detroit puts it together then they could do some damage and even replay that year where edmonton kicked out wings and when to the finals, detroit has the ability to be that team.

If any team that's this far out can put together a performance good enough to make the playoffs and still be a hard team to beat in the playoffs its the Wings. That being said Kenny Holland thinks they'll need at least 95 points to qualify and thats atleast 13 wins in the next 21 games. All i know is whether or not they make the playoffs this year i still think they'll regain the form they had the past few years. This team has too much talent and leadership to completely fall off their horse.

He had a limited role and was very inconsistent.
He was used on the power play because the only other right-handed option was Chelios. He did not begin playing on the power play until Williams was traded in '07.

Ya, for every time samuelsson hits the net, he misses it 8 times, many of those times high and wide, usually wrapping around the boards leading to an odd man rush the other way. He never really fit into Detroit's defensive-minded system very well and he will not be missed.
