With absolutely no pun at all intended to Don McClean's song, or with no disrespect at all intended to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, or the Big Bopper. But for me, October 20, 1977 was really "THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED"!! Fly on Freebirds!!

i see there are 3 justin bieber fans 1 thing i can say about skynyrd is that 30 years from now they will still be playing freebird unlike bieber who will be long forgotten
Wonderful! .. I'm a brazilian fan of this great band!... A similar crash happened with a band here in Brazil called "Mamonas Assasinas" around 10 years ago.....
Thanks FlyingFinn77 for this video and memories!... God bless all !!!
I seen the band three times in the mid seventies and still can't beleive that fateful day 33 years ago that took the lives of Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Dean, and both pilots. The Lynyrd Skynyrd band is still my favorite band to this day and no one even comes close. God bless for such an awesome tribute video!
Thanks for the great tribute! They are slowly reforming up in heaven. You know GOD is watching them jam as I sit here listening to their awesome music. Lynyrd Skynyrd Lives Forever!!!!!
I have been a fan of Skynyrd for a very long time, since I first saw them in 1976 at Knebworth, England, this is a fitting tribute to an excellent band. R.I.P,
This was comparable to when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper died......even more so, because it was the day our music died. Music was not to be the same. RIP Ronnie, Duane, Allen Billy, Hughie, and all the friends we lost along this trip called life....
Great video FlyingFinn77.. took me back to that sad October evening in 77. Brings it back.. when time was more simple and everyone was not in a rush.. Thank you...
Thank you FF. Excellent job on the video and it really captures the awesome music of LS. The feeling of watching it is almost as good as physically visiting the site. As a college freshman, I remember learning about the crash on the news and was selfishly sad I missed them on the concert tour that took place a few months earlier. I figured I see the next tour... never to be. Saw the new crew a few years ago with Billy Powell, I think he was the only original member.
Thanks so much for this video. Was and always will be a big Skynard fan! Can you tell me what is inscribed on the tree? I'm also assuming the Freebird gate is the entrance to the crash site?? Just might have to be one of my next ventures.

I've seen them 5 times starting with my very first concert in 1976 the same year I bought my first guitar. Now my 15 year old says dad "how do you play Freebird" lol....
The price this band has paid has equally been an influence to millions in rock music, easily one of the greatest bands of all time. Thanks, great job on the video. I was looking for that tribute tour video from the late 80's. I show up there with my wife next to some dude waving a rebel flag lol!
there is a rumor that the property where the crash happened is privately owned and the new owners do not want anyone to go to the sight any more. Anyone out there know if there is any truth to the story?

Wow~ What a wonderful and very emotional tribute to say the least. FyingFinn77 what an excellent job. Been a huge Skynyrd fan since I was a lil' girl. Great storytellers and awesome music. It just doesn't get any better. Every member of Skynyrd has/had their own unique and creative way about them.
nice, im goin there this time round. It'll be my first time, I just wish more people my age liked quality music but yeah i know what you mean, they'll never be the same - without billy now
thank zo much for posting video from a place where rock´n roll´s greatest and most interesting family met end of their road.flyinnfinn=Jarno Saarinen??
Thank You!! I was lucky enough to see them in Saratoga New York 3 months before the crach and they kicked ass !! Great Band Great Men !! I will always remember you !! RIP
Summer of 1977, ANOTHER world-famous band ALMOST had the same plane: AEROSMITH. The band employee sent to check out the plane said, "If you hire this plane I quit IMMEDIATELY!" They thought enough of the guy to listen. The story is in the book, "Walk This Way: The Aerosmith Autobio". GREAT book, as are LS crash survivor Gene Odom's books.
This was really good, as a teen that grew up in Bama during the 70's I remember the day, where and what i was doing when I learned of the crash...........it was at the least tramatic.
man i wish all the band members were stil alive but i wasnt even born when this happened but ive heard so much about it thanxs for the advice on thie vid tis is a freaking good vid bro nice job man
Great job on this video. I may never get to visit that crash site in my life, so to see the video footage of it is special. I have put up a video of the Drive into Hell House on my channel.
The song Simple Man has always made me cry. The plane crash, has always seemed to me like it never should have happened.. check the fuel gauges.. please! This band has touched my soul from day one & I know I'm not alone. I was glad to hear they've been inducted into the Rock -n- Roll Hall of Fame. I'd heard a graphic interview of a crash survivor from that nite- very sad indeed. May they all Rest in Peace. Thanks for the music, memories, inspiration, & this video.
Thank you for this I was 17 when this happened i was driving in my car when i heard about the crash on the radio. I have been and will always be a fan of the Original Lynard Skynard band. They were and still are the BEST Southern Rock Band. May thay RIP.
Very good footage of the crash scene.I guess that IF the FreeBird had to fall this might be as good a spot as any. I always loved Allen's stage prescence,he always looked so carefree and like he really enjoyed what he was doing. Noo,the FreeBird is NOT gone, they all live on in our hearts and on our 8Tracks and CD's and 33 and 45LP's! Freebird, one of the top 3 Rock'n'Roll songs of all time.
this is a beautiful, well made tribute to the one and only band from the south, SKYNYRD.I have to dry the tears now..R.I.P we love yall, and will NEVER forget you...you did an excellent job on this tribute...thanks
I was in Jr High, playing football that night at CC Moore Stadium in McComb, Mississipi, when this loud, low flying plane passed over us. "Damn, that's low" and as my parents drove us home, the main street near the hospital as blocked off with ambulances and police. We had no idea til the next morning that Skynyrd was on board. Ronnie, you remain the patron saint of poor white trash like me. God rest your wonderful and brilliant soul. We miss you. Tell Allan,Leon, Cassie, and Steve hello.
I went to training in Miss in June, headed south, and talked my way to the crash sight. A friggin emotional overload. Thoughts, thought, and thoughts....Fly on free bird......
in all seriousness, what is the deal with southern rock frontmen dying? ronnie van zant, danny joe brown (molly hatchet), and now the outlaws' hughie thomasson? there are plenty of other people in music that could've croaked besides these southern rock legends. fans have been so cheated of great southern music.
don't get me wrong, it's devistating for Ronnie, Steve, Dean, and Cassie. but the crash could've been A LOT worse. be thankful Gary, Allen, Artimus, Leon, and Billy survived it. If it weren't for that, there'd be no Skynyrd today.(if you can even call it Skynyrd)
1977 was the year of death for some of Rock and Roll's legends. Elvis Presley in August 1977, Ronnie Van Zant and members of Lynyrd Sknyrd in October 1977, and Marc Bolan of T Rex in September 1977. All were young and aged 29-42, with plenty of life to live and plenty of rock and roll in them.
Remember seeing them in San Antonio in the mid-70s with (the Outlaws)? At the end, all of the lead guitarists from both bands lined up on stage and took turns with a solo. Didn't realize at the time what a historic event I was witnessing. Which one is Cassie at 3:46 - 3:48?
They Died Heros And Legends And They Still Are My Son Is 3 And He Is There Favorate He Asked Me If We Could Go See Them Broke My Heart Telling Him What Happend To Them
Was in Lemoore Ca 1977 age 13 when they played in Oakland CA. Since my old man was in the navy from WW-2 era, rock was so alien to him and they wouldnt take me. Kinda weird even though Im from Cali Im all Fuking Dixie... and aint nothing ever gonna replace Skynyrd... Long live the South!!!
i am glad that i heard them because they are my favorite bandbut the only bad thing now is there all religious stuff not that its bad to hear that its not lynyrd skynyrd
Man, i'm only 14, however I wish I had been able to see this amazing band, who left this world at the wrong time. They marked the start and the end of an era.
I don't even think the new Skynyrd band is truly worthy, what with the exception of Gary and Billy. They are Skynyrd now as far as I'm concerned. And Rickey Medlocke is no Allen Collins. That lineup from 1977 was truly Skynyrd.
Somebody else who sees it the way I do. You are completely right in this. When I refer to Skynyrd, it is to the pre-crash line-up, not this mockery that's playing now. The spirit also died in the crash.
You gotta give em a hand for trying, they sure as hell aint what they used to be, but Johnny strives to keep his brothers music going, and Ricky was originally with them for a while..
I wish I knew the GPS coordinates of the site. If I went down to visit I'd make sure to bring some good whisky or something to bribe the owners into letting me look at the site.
I have other Skynyrd tributes in my faves. This vid is going straight to faves also! Can never have enough tributes for this wonderful and beloved band which is my favorite all time group! Seen them dozens of times in the 70's as a teen but, never saw any of the existing tours except had a ticket last year and ended up giving up my ticket (which was given to me as a surprise)
to my daughter who loves L.S as much as I do.She had never either band and wasn't born until the 80's. So, she experienced what I did to a degree and was rockin with them just as I did in the day.
Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd's music and it's embrace that effects us all. RIP Ronnie, Dean, and Cassie. 500 charaters isn't enough to do justice. They are the only group that me and my friends would follow state to state just to see them.
i am only 15 and wish i was arounde to hear them mplay live because the R the greatest band of all time and i find myself proude that there last concert was right here in greenville south carolina skynyrd will always be the greatest and no one besides the reunion can even come close ronnie was 29 years and 9 months old and i read somwear that he always said he wouldnt live to 30 and would die with his boots on fly free, free bird u will always be free
Does it really matter how they died? The point is...They parrished and so did one of the greatest Rock N Roll Bands ever. No doubt in my mind that Jesus Christ and the Almighty have been rocking to the finest of Southern Fried Rock since then and always shall be.
You know as strange as this comment may seem... you can take a sense of well being from the fact that just by seeing where this tragedy happened, you are supporting and indeed remebering the people as well as the musicians who died or were hurt very badly!...that's it! no more beers for me!;)
What must happen will happen and no reason to fight it or be angry....live and love while you can cause none of us...will know when its our time.....It will just take you.
i first saw this video about 6 months back...i must have watched it 50 times since. it's so sad but as i said to the guy who posted it, it's really calming too. rest in peace y'all.
Gillsburg, Mississippi 58 miles from Baton Rouge...About 5 minutes PAST McComb...Man, this could have been AVOIDED...Freaking Pilots WOULDN"T listen...Fire had been shooting out of the engines on the way from Lakeland,Florida to Greenville ,South Carolina... Cassie Gaines had BOOKED a commercial flight...RVZ said "Get on boys"...We got a show to do"....Such a shame... 30 years October 20th...Man, "Street Survivors" still sounds like it was recording yesterday...
My cousin was suppose to be one of the actual pilots for the flight...got called away to another flight that day to take some presidential folks up north to go pike fishing....makes me wonder..... if he knew the plane was in that bad of shape I am positive he would have grounded the flight......
I've also learned that it wasn't pilot error...they didn't dump the gas they used it on the bad engine cause it needed more to keep it going....
According to the FAA report (which is available on-line) it was pilot error. They had miscalculated their fuel supply and had engaged in "inadequate flight planning." This, coupled with a faulty engine, caused them to run out of gas.
one of the band members i recall seeing both pilots share a bottle of whiskey before flight..dumbasses, they knew something was wrong with the engines
I've been a Skynyrd fan since 1974,I greived in 1977,met Leon in 1978,met Judy in 1996,Artimus in 2005,and am deeply touched by this video today. Thank you for sharing your obvious love of Ronnie,Steve,Allen, and Leon. The Greatest Band To EVER Take A Stage !
Excellent work friend!!! Ya know the ironic twist to this tragedy is that Skynyrd, not knowing this but they had the power to ground that plane immediately if there were any problems, their contract with L&J leasing company stated this but the bandmembers were unaware!!!!! I'm still sick over this 30 years later.
Thanks for this! I first heard LS in 1977 here in Finland, when my friend's elder brother had bought their two albums. I remember, that he had wrote to the album cover something about howling guitars. Later I bought Nuthin Fancy, which played in my car one whole summer. Didn't know much about that planecrash before.
This is the one of the greatest tributes I've seen. I would love to see the crash site in person, although I'd get pretty emotional. I was 21 when I heard of the crash the following morning, and cried my heart out. Had seen them at the point about 3 times, and they were awesome. Such a tragedy. Makes u wonder why all the really good ones die so early doesn't it?
true but when i say breaks i mean like in gimme three steps there is a small 1st solo that he played. but i mean it wasnt like a 10 min solo it was like 3 min (still effective)
yes we remember this day
Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray

Tell Allan,Leon, Cassie, and Steve hello.

in all seriousness, what is the deal with southern rock frontmen dying? ronnie van zant, danny joe brown (molly hatchet), and now the outlaws' hughie thomasson? there are plenty of other people in music that could've croaked besides these southern rock legends. fans have been so cheated of great southern music.

don't get me wrong, it's devistating for Ronnie, Steve, Dean, and Cassie. but the crash could've been A LOT worse. be thankful Gary, Allen, Artimus, Leon, and Billy survived it.

Was in Lemoore Ca 1977 age 13 when they played in Oakland CA. Since my old man was in the navy from WW-2 era, rock was so alien to him and they wouldnt take me. Kinda weird even though Im from Cali Im all Fuking Dixie... and aint nothing ever gonna replace Skynyrd... Long live the South!!!

They died so rock band and rappers can go out and sing their songs and ruin lynyrd skynyrd name, no bands should be able to sing their songs ever.
amwwar 3 years ago 5
I don't even think the new Skynyrd band is truly worthy, what with the exception of Gary and Billy. They are Skynyrd now as far as I'm concerned. And Rickey Medlocke is no Allen Collins. That lineup from 1977 was truly Skynyrd.
drinkstwohanded 3 years ago 7
Somebody else who sees it the way I do. You are completely right in this. When I refer to Skynyrd, it is to the pre-crash line-up, not this mockery that's playing now. The spirit also died in the crash.
rebelsoldier64 3 years ago 3
You gotta give em a hand for trying, they sure as hell aint what they used to be, but Johnny strives to keep his brothers music going, and Ricky was originally with them for a while..

I guess Allen did the Freebird solo in one take.

SteveGaines 4 years ago 4
My cousin was suppose to be one of the actual pilots for the flight...got called away to another flight that day to take some presidential folks up north to go pike fishing....makes me wonder..... if he knew the plane was in that bad of shape I am positive he would have grounded the flight......
I've also learned that it wasn't pilot error...they didn't dump the gas they used it on the bad engine cause it needed more to keep it going....
anyway they should've listened to JOJO!!!!!!!
TonyBeazley 4 years ago 2
According to the FAA report (which is available on-line) it was pilot error. They had miscalculated their fuel supply and had engaged in "inadequate flight planning." This, coupled with a faulty engine, caused them to run out of gas.
BloatedSensations 3 years ago
one of the band members i recall seeing both pilots share a bottle of whiskey before flight..dumbasses, they knew something was wrong with the engines

Thanks for posting and making nice vid!

This is the one of the greatest tributes I've seen. I would love to see the crash site in person, although I'd get pretty emotional. I was 21 when I heard of the crash the following morning, and cried my heart out. Had seen them at the point about 3 times, and they were awesome. Such a tragedy.
