For me it's about a little girl (kate, little red. Or in this case, me. I also have red hair) growing up and comparing her personality and looks to all the other kids at school and tries hard to fit in and has low self esteem and then she meets a boy while going through all these early teenage emotions. The boy is a little bit older and has been through everything she went through and they fell in love. Which then probably messed her up but then looks back on it & realises it made her stronger.
