Ahem. in my opinion X-DEATH (or for fans of the funimation- EXODES) is the greatest enemy in FF history. as an elemental force housed in a tree, exdeath really blurs the line of what youre fighting and why. he is the dark side of nature incarnate, and stands next to kefka as the only villain who succeeds in his plans. @huntudown4 Exdeath is I think the only other one to directly kill a main character/party character, Galuf I think... And it didn't exactly have the same impact as it did when Sephiroth murdered Aeris with a grin. Kefka was more villainousness in my opinion, but he was too archetypal.

@RancorousC Kefka wasn't really archetypal I don't think, honestly. I can see where you're coming from but I think it's largely an issue of lack of exposition that makes him seem too much like a card-carrying villain. In reality his storyline, which isn't well fleshed out on a medium like the SNES, is pretty deep I think. I think if anything Kefka was less archetypal because usually villains did their deeds for power or glory, but Kefka didn't. He technically killed a party character (Leo) btw.

They are very similarly stylized, though, and I think the real thing that makes people like Sephy more, even if he isn't cooler, is that he has a much more fleshed out story than many characters, and holds an obsessive grudge against anyone other than Mother (Jenova).
