KingRundzap, I agree for the most part in your comments, thanks. Love Beach, for anyone that really knows the album, is only one of the great songs off the album. I would love to see them in concert again playing anything off of Love Beach or anything else they have done.
I am a huge ELP fan and have been for 35 years, but I just have to say that this is not what I think of as their best work. This just makes me think that for a brief period they actually considered going pop. Everyone knows it was kind of the beginning of the end of the classic ELP years.
@weednlogic What makes no sense about comments like yours is that ELP ALWAYS did a fair amount of pop tunes, going all the way back to the first album with "Lucky Man". Pop wasn't unusual territory for them. _Love Beach_ also has a longer suite-like song on it, of course. It's not an album that's out of character for them overall.
Longtime ELP fan (30 years) who has never heard anything from 'Love Beach' - everybody said avoid it - until just now - and you know what? I like this song!
This isn't as bad as all that! People are completely obsessed with critisizing and putting down this album. Forget the title, forget the cover, and ... isn't this actually a quite nice song?
I thought Love Beach was not good then but listening to it now, in detail, almost all of it is a pretty damn good piece of music relative to what was has been out the last 20+ yrs
i m sure that there's more people than expected who love this album...specially many americans who were not that much into prog stuff and loved late 70s early 80s AOR... and that's made a lot of people... those people will be probably satisfied by this last ELP album...
Sorry but I love the whole album. Always have. It's not prog but the songs are very catchy. I think the cover is what really turned everyone off to the album? It is a little Gay looking.
I agree - I love the whole album, too. I think what you say about prog is right. I like for ex. the somehow jazzy style how Greg sings some of the songs.
And Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman is an amazing song. The hypersexuality of the first side just doesn't work for ELP, sorry to say. If they'd done another epic on side one, or perhaps made Memoirs twice as long, Love Beach could've been a great album, not a mediocre one.
Anyone else noticed Emerson's fingers curling up in the video? Quite surprised to see this - it's at least 12 years before he had the nerve surgery on his right hand. Must have been quite a history to the nerve damage.
@PaulRoberts My theory about his nerve damage is that it came from playing digital pianos. A real piano will respond more and more the harder you hit the keys until something breaks (preferably in the piano) but on any digital piano there is going to be some velocity you hit the keys with beyond which its innards simply will not play any louder or brighter a sound. I contend that with that feedback crippled, Emerson overplayed just trying to get more response that would never come.
After the record Works Volume Two, Emerson was catapulted by his spinning piano into the universe, Lake flew away on his persian carpet and Palmer broke down under two tons of stainless steel drums. Then the record company hired three mediocre guys from the next local diso club and said:" We need you as an ELP double , couse we can 't get the originals" . and so this song was produced.
i think you're right, well, in some way... I read that Carl Palmer said that "Love Beach" was the worst album in his life.. well I think he did worse things with the late Asia, didn't he? what about video killed the radio star? aniway this isn't the best elp's level, it is an album they had to write for their discographic contract... but it is not "bad".

I wish they would seriously look back at this very good album and consider playing this live. Some songs are good, some great.

I think I read somewhere that EMO said that the nerve damage was caused by a motorbike accident he had many years ago.
Or if not the main cause it was a contributary factor.

Hahaha, you may be right... Carl Palmer clearly looks (and acts) like someone else.

@thesantoshow93 "Video Killed the Radio Star" was The Buggles, which was made up of Geoff Downes (Asia) and Trevor Horn.
