This song, along with" I Know you When, and Down in the Boondocks" were written by the great Joe South..I just saw Billy Joe perform last night at "Downtown Music Fest" in Dothan, and he still sounds great!!
We were in his fan club for years and went and had lunch with him he would sit aand talk with us and tell us about some of the early days.he is IMHO a great singer and a great person
Greatest clip I have seen so far! I just love this man, he has many talents! I wish he would come to Milwaukee, and I could afford the tickets to see him before I die! Billy Joe and Gene Pitney are my favorites along with BJ! Thanks really enjoyed it! Denise
I SO agree with you!! I actually got to see Gene Pitney at Summerfest and it was awesome - sadly though Denise, I think almost 50 years since... his voice would not come close to this, therefore, lets thk youtube for stuff like this!! Hugs, Jenni
I hope this doesn't double post... I was ready the comparisons between BJR and Gene Pitney. Interesting side note to that: they were members of each other's fan clubs!!
Ihad loaned our church youth group over 200 records and tapes. We were having a fundraiser for a family in our neighborhood who was going thru some rough times. That night, some punks broke into the church and what they didn't steal they destroyed.
I think this ranks in the top 5 of my favorites by him. I wish someone had the full song. I had this on his first album--it was the last song on the B-side. It got stolen along with several hundred records and tapes.
wow--what a voice --had no idea who this guy is--great voice--similar -resemblance to gene pitney--this a great song--thanks for sharing--& the edecation!!!!!i can see theres plenty of him on the right and down in the boondocks which i'm familar with-simon

Could you compare him to Gene Pitney. Style, looks, unique voice, and a whole lot of hits?

Over the last 6 months I have ordered an
investigation, and I think I found out the
people who stole your records and tapes
from the church.
They are worse than punks, they are thieves and low lifes. They are still bragging how they ripped you off.
If you want their names, I'll give them
to you, but you have to promise you won't
kill them. You can torture them if you want,
but no killing!

In the mid-1960's, Billy Joe Royal was probably second to the duo of the Righteous Brothers as the best "blue-eyed soul" American artists.
