It was absolutely nothing compared to Mao's Great Leap Forward, which took roughly 30,000,000 lives. China would have began its economic rise around 20 years earlier if he had succeeded. Chiang still beat Mao in the end in many ways. 1) Taiwan became a thriving nation 2) Mainland China is developed on the vision that Chiang Kai-shek had for it, not Mao Zedong's vision. Even though the CCP today calls itself communist it is much more like the Kuomintang of old than communist

However, you can't really say he won because Taiwan became a thriving nation because his purpose was to win China and he didn't. It doesn't really matter what tactics Mao used to win, because in the outcome, Chiang fled and Mao got what he wanted. You also can't say Mao lost because China isn't what he envisioned because he's dead. China was exactly the way he wanted it while he was alive.

@Kwongster94 And? Mao has a reputation that gets worse and worse as time goes on while Chiang's reputation only continues to rise. The reason why China is great now is because it ditched Mao Zedong thought and developed more in accordance to how the Kuomintang had been doing so previously.

Anyway, China would have already been this high in status 20 to 30 years previously had the KMT won - of course, the CCP didn't care about China as they were opportunistic deceivers .

Technically, Chiang Kai Shek was arrested by his own generals while campaigning against the communists and given to them, This is how the ceasefire to fight the Japanese was formed :). Perhaps the communists could simply arrest or execute Chiang, but they didn't not to weaken the central government facing the Japanese invasion.

1) Anyone who don't know anything about Yan'an Rectification Movement (延安整風運動) should not try to praise WW2 CCP nor bash WW2 KMT.

2) Check out 龍應台's 大江大海一九四九. (probably the best book written about that time and era); I am surprised you even mentioned Edgar Snow , a clear communist sympathizer that left out many true stories about their misdeeds.

Chiang had to be KIDNAPPED to agree to a untied Chinese front between the Nationalist and the CCP against the terror of Japan. Simply put, in 1931 Japan invaded Manchuria, Chiang concentrated in fighting the communist, unit 371 did biological experiments on the chinese... Chiang STILL wanted to fight the communistt,when eventually, meiling and chingling and the USA forced him to fight the Japs, after he signed the pact,guess what?he STILL wanted to fight the communist!HE IS INSANE!

Chiang is not insane, the Communists were a threat from beginning to the end. Even Zhang Xueliang who kidnapped Chiang and persecuted by him for this role did agree perhaps Chiang was right afterall in his memoirs after he freed himself from Chiang's wraith. The communists under Mao were continously harassing other Chinese resistance. Btw, from Mao's words, he said killing a nationalist soldier equal killing a japanese soldier, this was made by him during "The War".

Chiang Kai-Shek had responsibility for the Japanese invasion (he is a known Japanophile, and he actually love many of their nationalistic ideas), and the rise of Mao Zedong (He is the idiot that kill the moderate communists in the CCP that allowed Mao Zedong to seize leadership in the first place.). Read some more comprehensive books of this era, one will notice for the whole war, the communists were massacring Chinese civilians in yan'an and attacking other Chinese resistance.

Hell, they say they will forgive everyone once they take over, and we all know what happened to all of them in the cultural revolution. On the other hand, Chiang Kai Shek says he will execute everyone who opposes him, he barely get to 10% of his executed list, because members of the KMT is actively stopping his rampage unlike their communist counterpart. For instance, Zhang Xueliang lived way past Chiang's death.

But I would like to point out to your extremist views that the nationalist were not exactally free from responsibility of the terror of that period. I had read alot of history of this era, I know what many of them did but in no way, they committed as much anti-humanity crimes as Mao and the CCP did. Even Ma Bufang, the sadistic KMT warlord of Xibei's crime cannot be comparable to Mao.
