OK this .. is what I needed. clear cut recipe, explanation of how to use PH balance to choose the products that will keep hair healthy and moisturized
Hi Kimmay.....did you ever test the pH of the aloe vera plant itself as you mentioned? aloe vera juice is quite expensive where i am, so i would love to know if i can use the plant itself, which i harvest at home and use to wash my face (the gel from the plant)
Kimmaytube, do you have any recommendation to strengthen the hair, I know some naturals use Aphogee. I have used it when relaxed, but my hair hates it. I think I might be protein sensitive.
YES! that dr bronners is VERY STRONG ! i use to wonder why my hair was soo dry, squeaky clean & frizyy. i stopped usin it 2weeks ago , ill use it as a body wash or something but thank goodness i found out the ph is 8.9 so even if i dilute it its stil not good becus water has a higher ph den hair
I think you have to do what works for you. I have been using it for about 4 years. I use it when I feel I have excessive build up in my hair from beeswax or just from using a lot of butters. Everyone's hair is different, my body PH may be more or less acidic than your because of our different diets, so it might work in my hair and might not work in yours. Next thing you know they will be telling us shea butter causes cancer. Dont believe the hype. Do you.
I can see myself now carrying around my PH strips testing products in the store before I buy them ;-) I was so close to giving up on my hair and this has saved it! All recommendations from others have failed my hair and I couldn't figure out why. Now I see the scientific reasoning behind products that work for some and not for others. This series is surpassed informative. Much oblige to you!!
Wow, these videos blow my mind. I have been natural since 2006 and have had troubles maintaining my length. Last year I started using the leave in conditioner recipe you have posted, then doing the twist style. My hair grew 5 inches in 8 months! But I'm shocked to find out the Castile soap is so Alkaline. YIKES!!! I just used it a couple of days ago. It's going in the trash. I really need to buy those pH strips. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
oh wow! Kimmay Kimmay Kimmay, I can't thank you enough for educating me on all this stuff! I feel like I know so much more about my hair now and I'm now equipped to make valuable decisions when buying products and caring for my hair! Thank you!! God bless you!
does this mean bentonite clay is bad aswell? I have been using it for a long time and i never notice a big difference in my curl pattern or severity in my hair.. but i heard it has the same ph as baking soda. Maybe i should test it out but its almost impossible for me to test with that thing lol
I feel so privileged to be in receipt of such information, my passion for taking care of my hair and sharing it with others keeps increasing because of your selflessness. Thank you for breaking the information down into layman's terms, it really does help to digest better. Thanks again Kimmay...Life Long Learning....
I just got through watching the series and taking copious notes! I learned more in an hour than in my 34 years on the planet. Sending infinite thanks from South Korea! I will be ordering the pH strips, too.
Thank you so much! I've always wanted to know the science behind hair but all I would get were crazy looks. I swear your like the grown up version of me. Oh, and im subscribing. :)
I didn't know baking soda was that bad. I never used it on my hair, but I'm glad I haven't. I know I'm late regarding this video, but thanks for the info.
Hi kimmay your video was very enlightening , I wanted to know when you put aloe vera on your hai is it best to mix it with water, because straight from the plant it gave my sisters hair a hard rough feeling so am thinking she should have just mixed it with water . I know years ago I used it and it always made my hair grow, and it became thicker also.
I have been enjoying ur videos for about a week now. I've been natural for over 10 yrs and am now realizing how much I do not know as well as how poorly I protected my length. May God bless u personally and may He bless ur endeavors ABOVE AND BEYOND U CAN EVER THINK OUR DREAM.
@setlyng...I had a hard time finding the measurements myself but I FINALLY did! Yay! 2 tablespoons of YOUR preferred conditioner (silicone free), 2 tablespoons of (Whole leaf version) Aloe Vera Juice with a pH 4.0 or 4.5, 2 teaspoons of Castor Oil, 2 teaspoons of Jojoba Oil
u mentioned a leave in conditioner that u make yourself with caster oil, jojoba oil and aloe Vera, what measurements do u use and do u use aloe Vera juice?
u mentioned a leave in conditioner that u make yourself with caster oil, jojoba oil and aloe vera, what measurements do u use and do u use aloe vera juice?
Sometimes I put honey in my hair and I just looked up its pH on google and it says that its between 3.5 and 4.0. So I am guessing that counts as an acidifier too, right?
Kim, I'm so late watching this series. I knew you stressed making sure that hair was pH balanced, but I thought you were just another natural guru going overboard, so I never bothered to watch your pH videos. But now that I have, there will be some definite changes! Thanks for this series.
Perfect, I had just realised after my last relax that my scalp, never mind my hair felt horrible and decided that this was enough to make me stop and start transitioning, this information is great!
Thank you so much for sharing the wealth. A week ago I did the big chop with the intent of growing healthier hair, but after watching structure of hair 1-4 my new drive is to perserve my hair. I'm so greatful for my friend, Fifi, for introducing your channel to me. This is going to be an awesome journey. God bless!
@Jbear9 No. alkaline and base mean the same thing. anything more than 7 is alkaline/base. It doesn't act as a buffer, it will react with acids to make them less acidic / neutralize them.
I love you. Seriously, it breaks my heart that there are many(with good intentions) misleading so many without proper research to back up what they are saying. This was an informative series that I will pass along to everyone I know, natural or otherwise.
Thanks for all the information :) Really helpful. I wonder about the natural aloe, though, not the juice, because my grandmother grows her own aloe vera plants and is always trying to pass some on to me, hah. So far I only tried it on my skin...but maybe I'll use some in my hair next time I visit.
OMG!!!!! Thank you so much. Now I know what to do to my hair I will tell you the results, I will also share with my natural sista's. You are very knowledgeable sistas !!!!
So to make sure then anything, including shampoos and conditioners used on the hair before the leave-in, should be in the right ph environment for the hair?
I purchased Organics Olive OIl leave in cond (budget friendly), aloe vera oil and jojoba oil to make this mixture... I'm washing and twisting my hair tonight so I hope this works for me but I wonder if I should still use my carol's daughter twisting agent??
I have started my natural hair journey as well and I know more about my hair then every by watching your vids. They are amazing and so beneficial. Thanks a million Kim.
I am so grateful for this video and it makes SO much sense! I got disillusioned with my 'journey' recently but you have spurred me on... I felt like a traitor for using some 'non purist' products even if they were sulfate free etc. But hey its what works for me and at least I can be sure of some science behind these things. Keep up the amazing work.. Now if you could just help me with my hairs irrational shedding lol xx
I'm a Cosmetologist, And from the moment I seen others using and recommending baking soda on YouTube.... I thought that's not good for your hair... No way...
Oh my word! I was just on here researching how to use baking soda in a conditioner and watched this video based on the recommendation of another viewer... I'm so grateful to have watched this video; Kimmay, you are absolutely thorough and I enjoy your videos. Question for you: Is sage oil safe?
hey, love ur videos. i am a black man with coarse hair and i have long locs. i have been using the dr bronners soap for a few months now, but i didn't know the ph was that high. what would happen if i mixed it with some aloe verea juice? would it drop the ph down low enough?
Kimmaytube, just want you to know that of all the youtube ladies I have ever followed/watched, your journey has had the most impact on me. I gave up believing my hair could grow. I have always desired long hair, but didn't think it was attainable. Because you have recorded your journey, and taken such a professional/straight forward approach, you have shown me that long hair growth is not only attainable, but that I can do it too! My hair-once chin length, is now down to my shoulders! Thanks!
Hello, If you can please answer if not I understand because people leave a lot of comments on your vids but I was wondering if instead of using castir oil for my leave in I could use veg glycerine...I'm asking because my hair LOVES it...so my leave in mix would be:
Shea Moisture Leave-in Conditioner
2 teaspoons of jojoba oil
2 teaspoons of veg glycerine
2 teaspoons of aloevera juice.
What do you think? Thank you in advance and your vids give great support for newly naturals like me. :)
Thanks for posting this video. I stopped using baking soda for hair about 2 years ago. I do use it along w/ vinegar to clean... dishes and the bathroom. I was also a advocate of a "baking soda rinse" after shampooing. It was always dry and stiff.
I love "PAULA" and learned so much from her when she was on 20/20 or 60 Minutes talking about how hair products were such a waste of money, since a bottle of shampoo has only a few cents worth of ingredients and it all gets washed down the drain. I've never forgotten her advice about ANY drugstore products. Read and compare the back of labels. It has saved me SO much money.
Kimmaytube, I LUUUUUVVVV your videos! You're saying what I've been saying to my friends for a while and I have shared these videos with them. pH DOES matter. With that being said, do you know anything about Joico products? I use them faithfully because they actually have the pH right on the front of the bottle where you can see it. Since using it my hair has thrived. Just want to know your opinion on this. Thx!!!
I don't have any natural curls like this really sucks , it's waiting game to find out how to get them but i'm getting my info daily from you. thank you.
Hi I have two questions: 1) Do you know of any sites that list the pH of various hair products, 2) After conditioning hair, when rinsing all of it out, will the water then change the pH again? Thanks!
I've just really gotten on this eating better, go natural kick. It's been progressive since March 2010. My friend just put me on to Dr. Bronnor's which I bought from the health store. I'm so glad you included that side note. I feel like a chump. I may be picking up a pack of test strips myself.
You are using too much. Use a one tablespoon per bottle of water. I mean, I am white/ Hispanic, but I have read and and used it and my hair is fabulous.
I know im late seeing this but im sooo glad i never believed in these methods. I go to school for science and when i saw girls doing this to their hair i couldn't believe they would do this for a more manageable look. What do you think about that Megatek?
I'm so happy to have found your videos. I love to learn and love taking informative steps in reaching optimal hair care. I spend so much on hair products and often wondered why I don't get the results promised/anticipated. I hope one day to have the courage to stop relaxing my hair. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this series. Thanks!
I so enjoy watching ur video their are so informative and helpful. I want to thank you for sharing you knowledge with us. And also for taking time to do that for us. I have a question for you and it's not about hair, how do you get your middle so little let a sister know. I dont do the baking powder but was doing the AC rinse.
I am currently using dr. bronner's pepermint castile oil and even though i understand what you are saying i don't understand how the ingredients in the product could make it a base...maybe i should get one of those strips. Are there any good shampoos anyone could recommend for me?
Thanks so much for this video series. I was seriously considering buying the Dr Bronner's soap and trying baking soda out on my scalp. I'll give them both a miss now. Forewarned is forearmed.
KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS! AND THANKS A MILLION! Youtube gives many people the opportunity to speak on almost any subject however that also means that foolish and unfactual information is spread. BUT I appreciate truth. So thanks a ton!
I love this lesson on our hair care and share with others. I got my test strips from you. By the way, thanks for shipping so quickly. I'm learning to make my own hair care products and use yours as a base to start with. Thanks a lot!
Wow yeah I have made a day out of watching your videos, and I have to say Bravo!!! I am in love. I was faltering in my fight to stay natural, but you have well equip me with knowledge and I and proud to persevere. Thank you so much!
OMG Kimmay!! This is THE MOST INFORMATIVE video series I have found on youtube!! I am newly natural (5 months) transitioning without the big chop and it is majorly important to me that I am as educated as possible about how to properly care for my hair since I have experienced some thinning in the crown area due to heat and chemicals. Thank you SO much for you heart to serve and educate the natural hair community. I'm can't wait to do my 1 year length check! If Kimmay can do it, I can too!!
I've really enjoyed watching these pH balance videos. What difference have you noticed in your hair since starting to use pH balancing to care for your hair? Thanks a lot!
WHYYYY didn't I watch this video months/years ago! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I had no idea about Dr. Bronner's soap..that's what I use...err...used! In almost two years I haven't seen a lot of growth on my hair so I've decided to pay close attention to the health of my hair. I totally agree with you and the effects of baking soda (I understand how pH works but didn't apply it to my hair..crazy). VERY INFORMATIVE!
I love that you have incorporated a scientific background behind hair and hair products. I love people who present information well and give good education.
WOWOWOW!!! is all i can say. to tell the truth, i did not really think that "the ph balance" of your hair was that important but watching these WONDERUL videos! i have learned soo much and have realized the importance of this! excellent and God bless*
Hi Ms. kimmy. great job on the video, I am currently a biology major at the University of Maryland and this makes so much sense to me it's incredible. The question I had about this video is although we have the acidifier and leave in conditioner options, we don't necessarily have shampooing options. or is it any shampoo with the range between 4-6.5 also? thank you.
um how can you test shampoo bars :-P and what would be a better clarifying shampoo, im pretty used to the baking soda method and it really did the trick w getting rid of buildup
Thank you for this great series it is very informative. Is there any chance you could let me know what the pH balance of vegetable glycerin is? It would be really nice to know that; Thanks again
hi can i buy ph stripes and use them to test any products i may use... am transitioning and like u i want healthy natural hair.by the way where can i fend kinky curly knot today?
thanks you've been a greet inspiration and help to me.
Hey Kim! I know that in one of you quarterly hair update videos you showed that your hair was in no need of trims which is GREAT! But I can't find a video that explains how you avoid trims. Can you please let me know how you manage to do that?
Hey Kim I really enjoy watching your video.I really have learn alot. I was wondering if you every thougth about diluting dr bronner soap with ACV, Lemon Juice, or Aloe Vera Juice to acidify it? Do you think by acidify castile soap it will be ok to use?
Great video as usual Kim!! Thank goodness for you and your factual and educated approach to hair (much like myself), b/c there are so many blind followers out there.
@synthmusic, do not use regular vinegar on your hair at all! Also, apple cider vinegar can be very drying to the hair as a clarifier so it's not something that you should use often. Use clarifying shampoos instead.
I also want to say that Kimmaytube is a guide, we should all be doing our own research as well.
Loving your videos. I did want to say that as a soap maker, the Dr. Bronner's ph is high because it is soap. Most soap has a ph balance between 7-9 because that's where it is more effective to clean.
Anyway, I have learned a lot here and am in the process of once again going natural. Keep up the great work!
I understand why many general use soaps have a high pH.
However, human hair does not require a pH higher than 7 for cleaning. And the focus of this series is hair care. High alkaline solutions can disrupt, break and dissolve the disulfide bonds which give hair its strength and shape.
Parts 2 & 3 of this series cover these areas in more explicit detail.
@lainey68 , I wish I viewed this video sooner in life, I have used Dr. Bronner's as toothpaste(ouch) and shampoo. It was too harsh it seemed. I was not pleased with the result for my hair type. I still will continue to use Dr. Bronner's castille soap in a bottle but only as hand soap and diluted shower jell.
OMG!! Thank you so much for talking about Dr. Bronners Magic Soap. I bought 2 large size bottles and tried it on my hair 2 times. Since I last tried it a month ago, my hair as been coming out in large clumps. I diluted it however I might have gone slightly overboard with measurements. "I kept trying to get a lush foam". I now think my hair might be damaged from this. Do you think its possible to revitalize my hair after using a PH of 10?
Hi Kim...you are truly an inspiration and a help! i just finished re-veiwing your vids on ph balance.,..i missed some things the first time around... -- i didn't make the connection between open cuticles and porosity. (duh?) i went online looking for the solution to why my hair texture was so different from tip to root .. and got more clarity about porosity from two other young ladies. Checked out your vids again and there at the very end of your 4th vid you mentioned porosity briefly. THANKS
Used my pH strips for the first time today. Exciting! I substituted Curlfriends Leave-in for the Knot Today in your leave in recipe (which has been working wonderfully for me)....this is making hair care fun again!
I love your structure of hair series it is truly amazing. I didn't realize that pH was so important to hair. I knew that relaxers were bad for hair but I didn't know exactly what they did to hair on a microscopic level. Your homemade hair strand model helped me understand the information. Cant wait for your DVD to come out :)
as far as the baking soda treatment, what if i follow up with a nuetralizing shampoo? i haven't found anything to clarify my scalp like baking soda.. thanks for your insight!!
Very informative. One question, my daughter has very thick, dry hair. So i just found out that she has high porosity hair so i brought the elasta qp creme conditioning shampoo which is suppose to help with ph. Do u think this is good, and when used should i follow up with a moisturizin conditioner?
question: have you ever tested the pH value of cantu shea butter leave- in conditioner and is it in the range thats good for our hair? plus what about tea tree oil. i know u have mentioned jojoba oil and castor oil are good but what about tea tree oil?
Q: What does "pH optimized" mean? I see it on some bottles (Aphogee), did a quick Google search, can you explain it in layman terms? Thanks busy lady. Luv ya
Thank you for series of videos. I really found them to be educational which will go a long way while I'm transitioning to natural hair. I have been somewhat shy in making my own products at home but understanding the chemistry behind everything just might have given me the extra boost I needed!
I know I'm late but I just want to tell you I feel so inspired by these videos that I can grow and keep my hair! I did the big chop on June 26 and am now waring yarn braids to grow but I that once I take them down I will be better prepared to take care of my hair.
Kim i must tell you what you say about baking soda is true, i too was a blind follower squeakily cleaning my hair with baking soda, and apply acv to the hair hmmmmmm that was the worst asoon as my hair dried after burning me it was immediately dandruff central, i thought i was doing my regimen incorrectly, you have opened up my eyes and I WILL NEVER I REPEAT NEVER EVER EVER USE BAKING SODA IN MY HAIR EVER AGAIN, and to add my hair broke like crazy it got dried, frazzled and thinned out badly!!!!
I absolutely appreciate this information. I'm a new natural and I've been experiencing problems with hair period, in its relaxed state, now in my natural state. Knowledge is definitely powerful in any and every situation. Your four part series has enlightened me, as well as several of your other videos. I must say that I am absolutely inspired!!! Thanks!
Wow!!!! And here I thought I was going natural to get over all the hair DOs and DONTs!!! This seems sooo complicated!!! But thanx so much for this info :-)
WOW! 0_0. I've never knew the science behind relaxers, and I finally know! Thank you so much for these videos that talk about Ph scales! I've never understood what it was used for! U should take this to another level and become a chemist! LOL that is if u wish to. but Great job! you have explained everything well, and I understood everything u said! I've watched ur video about the difference between shedded and broken hair. Oh, and I have natural hair! I'm looking forward to more videos! =)
Wow! I have watched several of your videos and I am so happy! I feel like I have several lightbulbs going off in my head because everything you are saying is making sense. I have made many errors with my hair over the years and lost so much hair as a result. My hair has been natural for five years now and is bra strap length. Thank you so much for making informative and scientific videos with a purpose. I can't wait to try your leave-in recipe and continue my journey for beautiful, healthy hair!
I wanted to get your opinion on using African Black Soap. I do not have pH test strips readily available, but I was able to research the pH value of African Black Soap, and I found out that it ranges between 8 to 9.
My shampoo consists of 1/2 water, 2 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tbsp of jojoba/sweet almond oil, few drops of tea tree oil, and a handful of pieces of African Black Soap. Would these ingredients, in particular water, lower the pH value of my shampoo?
Hey Kimmay, as u know we all love u and really do appreciate your efforts to educate. thanks. but i got a question: in this vid u mentioned that anything with a ph between 4.0 and 7.0 is good for the hair. u did a vid with the kinky curly vs eco styler olive oil n you tested the ph of the eco which came out to 6.0 i believe. u said u prefer ur kccc instead because it has a lower ph, but even though eco styler has a higher ph it isnt that bad based on the ph range. can i still use it if i add
@3eerht3 hahaha lol ( i am only laughing cos i got the same experience, and still have 3 bottles of that soap sitting in a drawer, time to dig them up and throw them out!!)
My question is, where does shea butter come into this? What is the pH of shea butter and how have you used this to incorporate it into your regimen? Would you recommend using a whipped Shea butter and coconut oil mix as a leave-in conditioner? Why, or why not?
What an amazing series. Well done Kim. I had to give you a round of applause afterwards! Seriously though, you have literally saved my hair. Thank you.
I just subscribed to your channel today after watching nearly all of your videos. I am a newly natural (only 2 wks since the BC) and I have learned so much from you. I will definitely keep watching you and looking for more tutorials because you are truly my inspiration. My hair has been extremely dry, but I am going to follow your instructions and hopefully they will help me and my hair.

this is the best video ever! thank you sooo much! at first i thought it would be difficult to understand, but your summary at the end is so useful! what do you suggest using Dr. Bronner's Castille soap for? (i have some and am now afraid to use it) thanks!
I have relaxed hair. After watching the series I want to change up my leave in conditioners. I'm not sure if they are good for the health of my hair (i.e, aphogee green tea keratin restructurizer and the pro vitamin conditioner). Is your mix of leave in conditioner good for relaxed hair as well?
This was very helpful. For the past two years I have done the baking soda and have always heard the opposite. I'm glad there are people out there like you who actually care about the quality of our hair, inside and out, instead of the "feel" of it. Thank you so much! Keep the information coming!

Baking soda is not alkaline, it is base, which means, it will bring acid or alkaline to base, as it is a buffer.
Jbear9 9 months ago
@Jbear9 No. alkaline and base mean the same thing. anything more than 7 is alkaline/base.

I also want to say that Kimmaytube is a guide, we should all be doing our own research as well.

synthmusic 1 year ago
Loving your videos. I did want to say that as a soap maker, the Dr. Bronner's ph is high because it is soap. Most soap has a ph balance between 7-9 because that's where it is more effective to clean.
Anyway, I have learned a lot here and am in the process of once again going natural. Keep up the great work!
lainey68 1 year ago
@lainey68
I understand why many general use soaps have a high pH.
However, human hair does not require a pH higher than 7 for cleaning. And the focus of this series is hair care. High alkaline solutions can disrupt, break and dissolve the disulfide bonds which give hair its strength and shape.
Parts 2 & 3 of this series cover these areas in more explicit detail.
kimmaytube 1 year ago 3

THANKS
