  • none of the people talking understand how lucky they are.

    :(

  • "better stop now

    before i start cryin"

    wow

  • This is the most confident and assured I have seem Elliot Smith play, Think I love him

  • You don't have to be currently using to suffer from addiction, especially with heroin. Heroin withdrawal brings a horrible, make-you-want-to-die sort of pain- one that recurs and doesn't just "go away" after you've stopped for a year or so. It breaks my heart that Elliott had to endure that at any point, but he did- and I'm forever grateful to him for using that suffering to inform what are some of the best songs ever written, that have given us hope and comfort and understanding over the years.

  • Just fantastic.

    Miss you

  • god I wish I could go back in time and tell him just what an effect his music has on so many people. That thousands of his fans would watch videos just like this on youtube and feel pain, regret and love. We miss you Elliott

  • I rather feel he made every shut up in the middle...

  • If people would listen the audience quiets as soon they hear him always a few assholes

  • I miss this man...a true spokesman for that which is eternal.

  • he looks happy to me. the sentiment of the song may be a bit sad, but he's not reliving the memories, he's turning them into something more. he really abandoned art for this one, it's very pure.

  • beautiful raw and heartbreaking... truer words never lived..

  • for those who care, the date of this show is 10-14-2000, at the "belly up tavern," the start of his final US tour.

this was the first time he had ever played this song live in the US (premiered it a week before this in england).

  • @UnreleasedOriginal thanks i was actually wondering that , its crazy that only months before he looked so clean cut and somewhat healthy... either way love this guy soo much .

  • oh man, he looks rough here

  • Ugh, people shut the fuck up!

  • and throwing in a C here and there. its all common music since the turn of 1900's in western music at least.

  • @magicbag6790 Art is art. Technicality does not equate to art.

  • Am-G-F common progession in Elliott's music

  • @magicbag6790

Yet he has so many songs that are so much more than 3 chord songs. Some of his song number damn near 25 chords, he was a master at chord progression and changes, cant deny that.

  • These fuckers all talking during an Elliott Smith concert. They should be the dead ones, not him.

  • Was this just before he died?

  • @chairmanmeow1973 no, just after

  • @billyboneshisfancy I mean this is kind of a dumb response, dude. He wasn't asking if the guy was dead in the video or anything. He wanted to know when this recording was in relation to his death. In other words, was this a month before Elliott's death or 5 months before Elliott's death or a year before (etc, etc, etc)? Clever response though.

Anyways, one of my favorite songs ever. Such a beautiful man.

  • :( i love this song so much R.I.P elliott smith

  • This is sad. He looks dead already/.

  • Just to see him in that condition makes me want to cry.

  • Poor Elliott. He sounds wonderful, but he looks awful...

  • who is playing the keyboard in this????

-at 2:00-2:20 elliott looks like a skeleton. so depressing to see/watch

  • greatest song writer ever... sorry bob dylan >_>

  • R.I.P

  • this is so amazing, so sad and awesome.

    elliott is a brilliant songwriter

  • R.I.P.

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P

  • I could make you Smile,If you stayed ahwile

  • those drugs you got wont make you feel better

  • possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • one of the best live performances of this song/any of his songs ive seen. I miss him dearly.

  • little part of your life your keeping together...

  • So heartbreakingly beautiful.

Hope you're happy wherever you are.

  • I love you elliot smith. your music helps me keep a relationship with music.

  • he was such a beautiful person.

  • Compare how he looks here (october 2000) with just a few months earlier....shockingly quick transformation...

  • This man right here, is reallyone of the greatest songwriters I've ever listened to, he's a great guitar player with an awesome voice, and above all, his lyrics are so wonderfully beautiful.

So I have just one thing to tell you elliott, may you rest in peace forever...

  • @completeclapton won't be another one thats for sure

  • he has such a great voice

  • i love this man!!!!!!!

when he is jamming on the guitar in the middle, he looks so happy and beautiful!!!

    RIP ELLIOTT SMITH <3

  • dont talk bad about this man

  • he looks so unhappy!

  • at least i didn't say he was already somebody's Fuhrer

  • i still don't understand why he had to die...miss you x

  • that smile he has at the end brings tears to me

  • im crying right now

  • Comment removed

  • spelendide parole...

  • I really really wish i saw him play live

  • Poor Elliott.

    :(

  • Crossed with snape

  • a little...the half-grown junkie mustache

  • i bet you have a hitler mustache

  • my god he looks like shit

  • No dude, you're right. This is so hard to watch. Elliott looks so... my god, I can't even find the words.

This is very sad. Poor Elliott...

  • this is painful to watch. the angel sings of the pain of living, only for the sweet melodies to dissipate into the voices of the indifferent collective.

  • what the fuck? could you be any more full of yourself?

  • im not full of myself man, it just pains me to see that during this time he used heroin as a means to prevent him from dying inside, yet it was ironically killing him even more. I don't give a shit about myself. Don't be so judgmental.

  • i was comparing him to his younger self, whilst in his prime. i don't say it derogatorily, not at all. its just sad to watch.

  • He looks like Jesus Christ @ 1:52

  • That was hard to watch... a beautiful song and a beautiful soul up against an indifferent crowd and what was clearly a full-blown heroin addiction.

Thanks for the music, rest in peace.

  • It was hard to watch the crowd not care, and to see him so wrecked - but it's nice to see him singing this song live. I watch once in a while. It's one of his best, and he seems happy somehow...

  • @sluggojfm You know after his death, they did a toxicology exam and didn't find any drugs in his system. Knowing that always makes me smile.... because as you said, I'm sure there was a time in his life that he was fighting that horrible addiction. heroin is a horrible horrible drug!

  • @sluggojfm

How can you tell if someones a "full-blown" heroin addict just by watching them sing a song? Not sure when this video was shot, but apparently he kicked the habit towards the end of his life.

  • @inheritancerecords yep. he kicked the habit in late 02, was clean for a good year, but people love to wrap themselves in the media-fueled drugged rocker fantasy of him dying a long slow death. these people ignore or don't know about FACTS: his 2nd to last recorded song ends with him declaring "feeling stronger every single day". his last song suicide machine is a full length complaint about people labeling him a sad sack. his inconclusive death. his improving performances in 2003. i could go on

  • @sluggojfm That's ridiculous, regardless of how many thumbs up you receive. If you watch his performance, it was spot on here, he looked genuinely content and sang the song perfectly. If you weren't focused on his addictions (that you've read about), you'd never know the guy performing this song (which was brilliantly executed, by the way) had any problems. And that's the real shame here...people can't seem to separate Elliott's music from the reports of his abuses.

  • @doomrat Well, his comment is spot on, it's pretty damn sad. Just look at Elliott here compared to concerts posted on youtube that he did 3-4 years before this...it almost hurts to see him look like that. His performance here was still great, however, in Heatmiser and up until around 2001 he was clean-cut and looked healthy. When I see an Elliott video and he looks like this, I instantly know it's around 2003 when he died. Heroin really did take a toll on him -- both mentally and physically.

  • Sam Coomes

  • he looked here really spooky, but still, even being stoned he was able to sing and play so insanely beautiful! I'll be always in love with his music, and 'Twilight' is the song that will always remain something special in my heart. I won't forget the moments I was going through similar story as in this song. R.I.P my sweet prince, Elliott.

  • fucking epic

  • if you think this is bad, search, Elliott Smith sunset junction -

that is easily the worst I've ever seen him look - it breaks my heart just seeing him under the influence of that evil evil substance.

  • Amazing song, amazing guy. He could reach into your fuckin chest and clamp onto your soul. R.I.P.

  • You know what you just said, right? Jeez, dude.

Great singer, though. I feel bad for not having dicovered him for so long.

    RIP

  • Yikes, you're right dude. Umm all I can say is that my sentiment was well intended, but clearly I wasn't thinking about how he died at the time I wrote that. Sorry. Dipshit move on my part.

  • It's okay, man. You appreciate the music.

  • its okay youre a dick

  • Love you too.

  • man...he looks horrible...wish i coulda met the man...i feel close to him through his music...yet i feel so sad i'll never get the chance to actually see him play his beautiful music...

  • He looks like shit.

  • At my age of 57, I think he was one of the greatest!

  • I really don't see why the people around keep talking and laughing.. Like they don't care. Wish I could be there instead of them

  • Wasn't it released post-humously?

  • I was there

  • its too hard to watch this video, especially this song. you can really tell which shows elliott seems more "broken." I miss you brother...

  • aww.

  • Yah, I love him, but he looks really terrible. He is so missed. This video pains me to watch.

  • oh man, that Wurlitzer sounds so good with the guitar. a rare addition to his already perfect sound.

  • "You don't deserve to be lonely

But those drugs you've got won't make you feel better

Pretty soon you'll find it's the only

Little part of your life you're keeping together"

sounds like my life. hopefully soon i can say "it sounds like my old life"

  • changed my life

  • whom ever filmed this, bless em...I love that all this magik is happening and you can hear a few daft people in the background clueless getting suds'd up and probably guffawing over a snooker ball table ball while the magik is flowing just in the moments now lost forever...wow. Elliott Smith...one human I am sad I never got to meet...

  • this is one of my fav songs. love it

  • "Elliott Smith $3 show", how great is that!Feel so sad that he has gone.

  • something i never hear anyone comment on is elliott's technical savvy. Did you know he mixed and engineered many of the songs you hear on his studio albums? He could take a soundboard apart and put it back together with 20 beers in his gut and a mind full of heroine. He was a genius technically and artistically. RIP elliott...

  • you couldn't be more wrong. they are the what kept him going

  • anyboby know what date/show this is?

  • he was so amazing im so disappointed i didnt get to see him live or even meet him

  • i love you man

  • I LOVE THIS MAN! When I die I know he's gunna be one of the people waiting to meet me, he's like family to me...this song is so beautiful

  • The talking has always annoyed me... It happened during a lot of his sets. But yeah, it was a bar and I guess people didn't know a genius was playing metres from where they were standing.

  • I agree 100%. I came across a flyer online from when he performed at La Luna and it said "Elliott Smith $3 show"

I was like WHAT? $3??? I almost fell over that you could see him for $3

  • HAHA 3?!...i don't have the money for what i would pay to see him perform even an insrumental...he's fucking priceless...i miss elliott =[

  • the 3$ shows were elliott's way of making sure the local people who supported his talent early on could easily afford the door. He cared more about his listeners than they cared about him...and his listeners loved him so very much. I feel fortunate to have been witness to this musical genius and his brotherly love.

  • who cares if it's a bar, when i go to a show i keep my mouth shut and soak it in cos you never know when you'll see them play again if at all.

  • "the millions of fans, ignoring the bands"

    brutal. I miss you Elliott.

    See you in heavan.

  • Brutal?

The man was musicaly and lyricaly inclined, not brutal.

what do you even MEEN brutal?

  • what do you mean 'MEEN'

  • mean, obviously.

  • THEY SHOULD STOP FUCKING TALKING DURING HIS SET. jesus christ. people are annoying

  • Its a bar.

  • @helenbrook they're not annoying...they're stupid insipid cunts...on the other hand...you are beautiful for loving his music and sticking up for him...im glad there are folks like you around...cheers.

  • He wasn't just a great musician, but a poet too.

    I fucking miss this man.

  • what year is this?

  • Thats so beatiful, with the piano to, what show was this?

  • He played that song good live.

    RIP elliott

  • amazing song. love elliott smith so much! RIP.

  • My favorite song by him. <3

    R.I.P.

  • This version is better than the record in my opinion. God, it makes me miss him...

  • i also love it more then the version from the album - it has more pride here

  • Too bad to see him this way..

  • shut the fuck up and listen

  • My thoughts exactly...LISTEN!

  • its so great. the way he does it...

    im so sorry...

i got known him just 3 days ago and im deeply sorry. i wish he was alive.

its the best music i ever heard.

its hard for me to realize he is dead.

  • It's my opinion, too.

I got known him 2 months ago.

It's horrible I will never see him.

    =(

  • Word, could not agree more.

  • that crowd is fucking annoying their not at a cradle of filth concert they wont shut the fuck up

  • he looks very different, what year is this from?

  • The comment below is aimed at 'saangels'.

  • Mate what gives you the right to act like you know what elliott was feeling like and ridiculing someone else for saying their opinion. He is a prick for not keeping it to himself but at least he didn't try to act like he knew the reason behind Elliott's suicide. For all you know his girlfriend might have done it. My point is that you shouldn't act like you know what 'is' or what 'was' going though someone's mind or how they felt like.

  • mogwai is sick

  • haha, fuck yeah.

  • true true hunted by a freak:)

  • i dont agree. but i aint telling anyone to do anythine either so peace out :). so long as the actual reason for the suicide isnt just for being cool im down with that man. great song great artis great writer. miss im.

  • ungrateful crowd, grrr.

  • Here in Chile, We loves you, and we remenber you everyday. I Know now, what the sun touch your hearth

  • he has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard! Love elliott!

  • I agree

  • its not selfish, its not unselfish. its just too bad he wasn't happy.

  • unselfish is actually known as selfless

  • I love this song sooooo much

  • what a masterpiece

  • Uh, well...he's right. So shut it.

  • Who made you the judge?

  • I'm mad that he is dead. I never got the chance to see him in concert. I know that sounds selfish but he was more selfish by killing himself. I still love his music though

  • "but he was more selfish by killing himself" lol...........

  • the most selfish act some one can commit is killing themself... in my opion. I don't care if it is Elliott Smith, Kurt Cobain,Nick Drake, or anybody else. All of them are selfish

  • It really makes me angry when people say that killing yourself is a selfish thing to do. My uncle killed himself a while ago, and i, at first thought it was selfish... but , you never really know how crappy someones life can be going...and really , if it actually is going to make the person ( lets say in my uncles case ) feel happy and at peace to kill thereself, then i actually accept it... I probably sound crazy to you guys, but whatever...we all have our opinions..

  • i agree man.

i could never throw something bad at my mother like that but there certainly can be reasons that over power the entire idea of it being selfish.

  • No one can really exsplain why a person kills their self! It really is a selfish thing to do,because that person is only doing it for them self and no one else. That's why people call it selfish. Their reasons are their own.

  • You seem like the type of person who would be pissed if someone died because they crashed into your mailbox; now you've gotta buy a new mailbox, right? His suicide was not selfish at all. It was his life, not yours. Selfish is keeping him alive, troubled, and working just so YOU could hear a few more albums.

  • Take it easy, it was a joke. You just came off a bit insensitive.

  • it hasnt been proved any of them killed themselves.

  • people who think like you are part of the reason he was so miserable. a lot of people thought of him as mere entertainment and didn't pay the slightest attention to his lyrics or how he felt. he said that if you ever want to try to understand him, you should read "a hunger artist" by franz kafka.

  • okay listen I love Elliott Smith's music i listen to the words and all that jazz. I my best friend killed himself... I tryed to kill myself. And I still think it is selfish... I think I'm selfish for even trying I think my best friend was selfish for doing it. That is my oponion you don't have to believe it.

  • You know the expression "God's children". When I heard "Already somebody's baby" that's the first thing I thought of. Like, no one can have me because I'm already gone.

  • so this song is about that he is married and has a love affair whith somebody. and he even considers leaving with her but he cant why?

and what does this mean"the problem is that neither of them are without significant others"?

  • this is painful to watch. he looks so rough it honestly makes me teary

  • thanks a lot robsage7

  • it's a song about a love affair that everyone can relate to. he speaks of a girl who can finally make him laugh, how she is pretty, and how he much he cares that the poor choices she makes in life (drugs) are affecting her in a negative way. the problem is that neither of them are without significant others. he even goes on to say "and if i went with you, i'd disappoint you too" meaning he even considers leaving what he has for her, but feels that its easier to stick with what he's got.

  • i always saw the first verse was him talking to a girl and the 2nd verse is the girl responding back to him, "those drugs u got won't make u feel better" thats why in the 2nd chorus its "but you're already somebodys baby" rather than "im already somebody's baby". the 3rd verse is his response to her response in the 2nd verse. its call and response.

  • i dont understand it somebody please tell me whats it is about

  • cant anybody tell me what this song is about please i need to analyze it its an essay
