It gets frusturating with all the nail gun ammo and no nailgun. It's like this with many levels. (eg. Dismal oubliette) *Every* level should have at least one other gun on it.
I think you're right half and half. There's a lot of ammo for weapons you don't find in levels, but lots of basic weapons like 2x barrel shotgun. I don't think they intended the game to be played this way, all the way, but gave some bonuses for those who wanted a challenge.
Fuck this map. Takes forver to beat, I hate everything about it especially the low gravity. WORST

I don't think there is one. The weapons tend to get scarcer and scarcer the deeper into an episode you get, at least in the original levels.

Now that you mention it, there is a shitload of nailgun ammo, but almost no nailguns, in Quake.

Although you are playing it untwinked which while being very skillful is not what the creators intended.
If the game is played normally, you would already have both nailguns by this point
