I did this to mine the same week I got it. I carefully painted the red tip with a black Marks a Lot permanent marker. It also had goofy paint and creative license regarding decals. It also suffered from the use of a cheaply mixed plastic. with swirl marks here and there. It's funny I remember seeing those goofy stickers and saying "I dont remember these on the show" and sure enough, no stickers, no lables. No Yellow and Red oscilloscope either. Just 16 green leds on the show prop.
The thing about toys is, it has nothing to do with age, but the illusion of maturity. There is nothing immature about liking toys, only being childish about them. Personally, I think if someone is too old for toys, they may be too old to enjoy life.

One question, is this the 1992 Playmates phaser? Thats the one with the red tip and white buttons.

this is an amazingly sik mod. hahaha, i love the playmates mods better than the 1 grand prop remakes. these are so tough i love it
