when i first saw this movie, i was like O.O @ 2:33. i told my dad(who was watching it with me), "DUDE, HE SHOT JOHN!!" then i was like O.O even more @ 2:47, and by 3:18, i was nearly in tears. this was the first JW movie i'd seen where John's character was killed.still love this movie though. one of John's greatest XD

I read about this scene in The Stone Cold Truth. Glad I decided to look it up. Looks like a great movie but I hope I didn't ruin it for myself by watching this scene.

Dern took a break from another project to do this film. When he went back to work and told the director he was the first actor to kill John Wayne in such a fashion, the director replied "You son of a bitch, you just ruined my movie!" It then became a race to finish filming and get it released before The Cowboys hit theaters.

I believe Bruce was reluctant to do this scene. Imagine being the actor who's character gives the Duke this kind of treatment. Bruce probably grew up watching John Wayne movies.

Bruce Dern also played a bad guy in Hang 'Em High starring Clint Eastwood; I didn't like his character in that movie, either.

Of course, it's only his character who kills John Wayne's, but having only seen Bruce Dern in "The Cowboys," after watching this scene, it's difficult to feel anything but hatred.

Saw this with my father at the theater. Just about everyone in the crowd was emotional here. You could feel the tension and the hate towards Derns character

With his film resume, you might expect Bruce Dern to be a hard-living character. After all, he was the guy who offed John Wayne in "The Cowboys," who tried to blow up the Super Bowl with a blimp in "Black Sunday" and rode top gun in those motorcycle movies.

Dern shoots down such expectations with this recital: "I've never had a drink of alcohol. I've never had a cigarette. I've never had a cup of coffee. I've never had a marijuana cigarette. I've never had cocaine."

Bruce Dern was shot by the Duke (or perhabs Kirk Douglas) some years before in the Picture "The War Wagon". He hit the Ground and rises again for revance few years later, lol. A Link for this scene, also on my channel, above by Descriptions.
