There are two things that every human being needs to master. They are Respect and Compassion for every other human being. Once we achieve this then humankind will be at peace with itself.
Mao was almost correct when he said "religion is poison". What he should have said was "to be political is poison". Religious crusades, communist crusades, political crusades have all involved death and destruction.
When humankind repairs its collective ego and stops being competitive then, and only then, will the world be at peace.
We are all animals, delineating our group territory and hording our group resources. This naturally leads to competitive squabbling over who owns what and whom. When we can share everything, a global community, then will we have mastered compassion and respect. Only this should be important to everybody.
