Formosa就是「美麗之島」的意思。
把台灣命名為「福爾摩沙」的是葡萄牙水手，他們航行過台灣時看到這個美麗之島，情不自禁地高呼「Ilha Formosa」。
葡萄牙人看到美麗的島嶼時都有高呼「Ilha Formosa」的習慣，全世界包括亞洲、非洲及南美洲，叫「福爾摩沙」的海島就有十二個之多。
因此「福爾摩沙」並非專指台灣。
