Patchouli is an example of a witch, she's supposedly over a hundred years old.
Alice refers to Marisa as a "normal human". Alice herself says she used to be a human. What she is now is a but unclear, but most just say youkai magician.
I hear that Alice thinks she's a doll or somethig crafted by another witch and so much magic was put in her that she can use magic now herself and that her dolls are like best friends to her. :\
Additionally, Yukari may have something to do with it.
Yukari seems to have had a lot to do with just about anything thats ever happened in Gensokyo. Some even suggest she's older than Gensokyo itself, and she's the one who created the boarder.

These Megamari games are Touhou, and are gameplay wise slightly more complicated versions of the classic Megaman games.
The witch is Marissa
The other girl (who is also a witch) is Alice

Alice was a human who turned into a youkai. Its not explained why, but she does not see herself as a doll, she just loves them a lot.
Its possible that her grimoir has something to do with her transformation. She'll always keep it with her though.
