get him used to the crate by feeding meals in there, putting treats in there, and playing games around there. whatever you do, don't open the door when he whines/barks. you can also try showing your dog a treat when he is outside of the crate, putting it in the crate, and closing the door before he can get in. this increases interest in the crate quickly. then you can let him in and get his bone and close the door for a couple secs before letting him out. gradually increase crate time,
My Boston did this. And it broke my heart. I was about ready to forget about the crate and let him sleep in our bed. My father in law suggested that maybe it was because the crate was in a seperate room from us. Sure enough, once the crate was moved into the bedroom, he sleeps in it just fine. As soon as I say "nite nite" he goes to his crate with no problem. Every now and then we do let him sleep with us, but the majority of the time he's in his crate.
The crate is too big and by placing a pad in there you are encouraging the dog to poo where it sleeps (theres already poo in it's "house" i bet youd be unhappy too!) get a divider and remove most of that junk in there, make it his "den" by feeding him in there as well...
My standard poodle did the same thing especially at night, it would break my heart and would annoy everyone to the point we took him out. Me in my infinite wisdom would let him sleep on part of my bed - and we could never get him off of it :-p
My dog now sleeps in the bed with us but she was crate trained first. It really helped us with potty training and if your dog has to go to vets and stay over night being in a create is not as traumatic for them.
Forgot to mention, my dogs are purebred boston terriers, and one boston terrier mix. They love their crates, and will even put themselves to bed in them. Its their spot where they feel safe and content. And crate training DOES work when done properly.
My dogs are crate trained & love their space. Looks like this person missed the point of crate training. Dogs aren't supposed to go potty in their crate. Dogs naturally wouln't go potty in their sleeping/personal space. But puppies that age cant hold it for long. If they need to go, take them outside asap. Thats how they learn where to go. The puppy is probably crying because he doesn't like sitting in poop. My dogs used to get upset like this if they had an accident in their crates.
I think thecrate might be too big. I had the same problem with a lab pup but she was cool once she got into a smaller crate. Felt more secure. Sooo cute tho!
Wow, I don't know anyone who has ever kept a puppy like that. We've never done that, and our puppies have always been fine and grew to be well behaved and train dogs. What is the main thing that the crate helps with? Is it to keep the puppy in one area, for toilet training, or something else? Just curious.
im sorry but i would never put a dog in a cage i understand the training process but i mean com'on the dog is a part of the family and locking it in there is just well just sad...there are other ways of training
When my puppy's bad, we can't lock him in his crate becuase it has no door. So, either we ignore it or if he di something really bad (like running away and making my sister get her new white shirt all hairy) we lock him in my parents' room.
I got two english setters in two crates right now throwing one hell of a fit. but it is WAY too cold to leave them in their kennel and they'd eat my house up, including my furniture and wires:( they were NICE when I videoed them but yapping, howling, whining and barking like crazy now. I only crate them when I am sleeping or have to leave them alone, otherwise I let em play when I can watch.
when my boston was a pup he'd do that for hours and i couldn't sleep (even from the other room) so i let him sleep with me, yes even when he was this little, i'd naturally wake up every few hours to take him out to potty, i also made him sleep on a wee-wee pad on my bed but I don't think he ever had an accident except for maybe once? i love my pup, anyway, this reminded me of him as a baby. :)
If you get a dog you love, fuss, kiss, hug, play with them & treat them as you would your child.
You would NOT let your child poop next to their bed/in their bed so why are you allowing your puppy to do the same.
It's cruel, dirty, smelly & frankly unhealthy for your pup!!

My boston figured out how to unlock and open his crate using his paw, from the inside. Then he started teaching my other dogs how to do it. :|

He doesn't like his crate because his toilet is next to his bed.

@arbonac dont put pee pads in the crate. The pad should be set up close to the crate so the pup can see it from his crate.
